For me, Maradona and Pele still the best.

Too young to see Pele play. But yes, Maradona is ze BEST imo. The sure skills, arrogance. Like what bro @Beregond said, he made it in Serie A at that time with a bunch of really average players. Same as Argentina, no stars except for him and maybe 2 or 3 more better players.

I dare Messi leave La Liga and try his luck at Serie A or BPL. 40 goals a season - dream on.

My exact sentiments on Messi trying EPL, he is too much in his comfort zone playing for a strong Barca team. At least CR7 dared to play in EPL. Anyway, I feel Messi owes his country to try for another World Cup at least rather than quitting!

Before tonight England match, there are unhappiness & rift already in England camp ... :a-bang:

CNA : England's Hodgson dismisses report of Rooney-Vardy rift

REUTERS: England manager Roy Hodgson has dismissed "salacious" suggestions of a possible rift between forwards Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy and said the team were fully focussed on the Euro 2016 round of 16 match against Iceland later on Monday.

Reports surfaced midweek that captain Rooney and Vardy had a dispute over the Twitter prominence of Vardy's wife Rebekah, which could be an unwelcome distraction for the team.

"I haven't got a clue what you are referring to. There are absolutely no problems in football terms between Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy," Hodgson told British media.

"In fact quite the reverse, they are very close friends, both on the field and off the field. I have got no idea what you are referring to.

"I certainly would advise Wayne to give no comment to it, because it is obviously one salacious story that someone has managed to spin. It is of no interest to us."

England have come under pressure after scoring three goals so far and Hodgson expected a difficult encounter against Iceland.

"The character of the Icelandic people, their determination, their ability to survive through hardships - I am certain that has been a major factor in their progress as well," Hodgson said.

"But we know, perfectly well, that whether we title them favourites or underdogs, it is going to be a very, very difficult game for us and they are going to be a hard team to beat."

So Vardy, no worries .... :we-all-gonna-die:

What's the difference betw golden boot and golden ball?

I'm pretty sure that Masch was the captain previously. When did they ask Messi to take over? He is not a leader. He is a scorer, period.

Yes he was.

I feel sorry for Messi merely for the amount of pressure he has had to carry upon himself to fill the big shoe left vacant by the legendary 'hand of god' whom himself was regarded as next next Pele.

He then set the hope of the entire nation upon poor Messi by proclaiming he's the next Maradona.

Agreed tho that he's not the best fit with a skipper band.

Thats why he is not a leader. Mash is. Mash can take the pressure not only for himself but also his team mates and the expectation of the nation. And thats why Messi will never be better than Maradona even though statistically speaking he is better in every figure. Maradona is not just a great player but also a great captain and leader.

maradona on his days Is almost unfoulable,

unlike messi (too light weight)

he got the strength of trevez , and the skill of messi,

maradona shine in seria A, when its the top league that time, with tackle from the back legal,

win 2 point, draw 1 point ( can imagine how defensive the team play is?)

and won the title with Napoli

lead country to WC, almost single handedly.

I cannot see messi shinning in the toughest league, ( not saying la liga is not strong )

How apt...

What maradona did i think is not replicable in modern soccer.

In 1982, as an up-and-coming talent, he was kicked in most matches. Just like Beckham much later, he retaliated after a foul and was red-carded in the last match.

In 1986, he literally single-handedly scored the first goal against Shilton, before single-footedly scoring what some said the best-goal ever as the winner - taking revenge over losing the Falkland wars to England...

1986 world cup was his tournament.

1982 was Paolo Rossi's, the guy who was supposed to be serving a ban that was cut short

1994 was Romario's

1998 was strange - should have been Ronaldo's if not becos of his fits before the finals. Zidane could have said to steal the show

2002 was belatedly Ronaldo's

2006 was Zidane's story - for the wrong reason mainly

2010 like no stand-out player but Spain stood out as a team. Just surprised they won only narrowly

2014 will be remembered as host Brazil being trashed 7-1...

Messi is not made for world cup... yet. Depends on whether he still has the appetite to try.

hehe although I am too young to see Pele play, I have the view that Pele is overhyped mainly because during his era tactics and defensive plays are still lesser developed than modern era.  whenever there is a debate whether maradona is better or pele is better, my vote will go to maradona.  I was there to witnessed how he singlehandedly destroy England and Belgium and Germany in the 1986 World Cup quarters, semis and final.

Although he didn't score in the final against the much more tactically accomplished german team, he had a hand in all 3 goals even though he was closely marked by the german defenders.  I also catch him in action for Napoli during the Serie A games for that era.  and yes, he also singlehandedly propel Napoli to the top.

as for messi, I would cut him some slack because my view is that it is much harder to take on the defence and opponent tactics now rather than during pele's era.  he's no slouch although I do agree maradona probably does it better at leading his team than messi.  don't forget, in the modern era, club football takes up much more of the footballing calendar with the result that most talented footballers would have been burnt out by club level football by the time they go for the international tournament.  Germany won the last world cup because they have a much bigger pool of talents and some of the german talents that shone in that particular world cup, didn't have a particularly great season at club level football.

Golden glove n ball is decided by a committee unlike the golden boot which can be measured. Messi didn't play the first game unlike Sanchez who was ever present. I guess it's subjective. Sanchez was the most fouled player at the Copa so that speaks a lot of his prowess.

I have a different view when it comes to comparison betw new vs old, though.

In older football, players were less well-fed, and less-well-trained, facilities not as good, equipment not as good (dunno wore boots or just shoes, and think no shoes with better control or can kick further, etc.). Take into account travel, which is a big part of a pro soccer player's life, is by much older buses and propellor planes or locomotiv trains... conditions were much harsher then.

So for the players to stand out the way some of them had, would be a bigger achievement. And is there a player who had decided (or influenced) 4 world cups tournaments? England should in fact thank Pele for being injured in 66, or i doubt they would have won it even once.
