How much discount you got in exchange for the dash cam?

I assume you are not intending to retrofit a dash cam of your preference post delivery?

Dash cam installed by your AD (even if not from factory)  will preserve your right to bang table in the event of electrical gremlins during warranty period.

It does not come with my car. I asked for discount over the dash cam. So it seems to be not factory fitted but added in locally?

I have been driving for 20 years without dash cam... I am wondering what I am missing out.

That makes sense... I never had an accident with any injuries before.

FYI

Dvr is covered by Merc for three years

External ones aren't covered by Merc and come typically with one year warranty..

But hey it's your call.

$800 for the dash cam, JS400. SE offered the JS400 as a freebie but I was not interested so she gave discount over it.

At that time, I was also worried about how the dashcam will look like in the interior, loading on the battery, etc.

Why worry about how a dashcam will look in the interior? Aside from the well-documented advantages of having a dashcam (read up, watch videos), it can be unobtrusive. For my part, placed it somewhere behind the rear mirror of my previous C180K and ran the wires on the cladding (if that's what it is called) of the windscreen and into my glove compartment where there is a power adapter/outlet. Didn't need a technician to install it and also didn't think any warranty will be affected. This is the "over-the-counter" dashcam that i used (and lots more in the market), just worth $200 but it gave me peace of mind:

It does not monitor when parked but you can check Blackvue, more expensive and has battery cut-off so that the car battery won't be drained -- but for this you may want to think about possible warranty implications. It's a pity Merc doesn't have one of this:

Although I don't agree with Merc, I can understand their anxiety over DVRs and other items which drain their battery.

If you read other car threads, there are quite a few owners complaining about the short lifespan of their batteries.

At the same time, you see lots of owners asking for all kinds of gadgets in their cars:

See the number of owners asking auto fold mirrors, keyless entry etc. All these functions will drain the battery.

Add on parked mode, and you will see a long line of irate owners trying to claim warranty on their batteries.

Personally, I have switched to I drive mode, disabled the auto start stop. I also try to avoid using the radio / charging my phone etc when the car engine is turned off.

I also shortened the duration of the "Go Home" and interior ambient lights, in an effort to save wear on the battery.

However, I will definitely want a DVR. In this day and age of drivers doing strange stunts, this is a vital way to protect ourselves.

In fact some insurance companies will reduce their premiums if you have a DVR.

I installed the F750 that does a lot more than the J400 and an external battery pack in the boot. Draws battery direct from the external pack and can record much longer plus C&C can't fault me for meddling with their wiring to the car battery.

After Samsung u not scared of installing third party battery packs in your car especially if it get parked under hot sun?

I didn't read all the complicated back-and-forth, but it's really quite simple:

A DVR is worth having. Pretty much *every* car I see has at least a front facing one judging by the blinking LEDs.

Merc only offers the JS400, without park mode. It's not a great camera. The audio recording is crap - mine has crackles. The video is so-so, and you have to be up close to ID the plate. You need that special software (LogOn player) and special codecs to be able to view videos which means you'll need a PC. And finally there's no Wifi link, which means you'll have to remove the micro SD card to download your recordings. Easier said than done with the space constraints of my car.

So if I had a choice, I would've gone with Blackvue, the setup I have in my BMW. But I don't, and the reason is that Merc will definitely void the warranty on the battery and possibly also the warranty on the electrical system if I were to get such a system installed.

So I'm waiting out the 3 years and seeing how I feel about it. I don't really miss Park mode as I don't often park this car in unfamiliar places but I would much prefer another DVR.

I installed my own camera. I heck with Mini/BMW camera.

Camera powered by "Power Bank".

Power bank charged via ciggy.

Installer did a neat job for wire routing.

Yes, and with the Singapore govt now encourages cyclists and mobile devices on the roads, the chance of getting into an accident with injury has become so much higher than before. I already encountered a few near misses, luckily all able to stop in time. Else I really have to start downloading videos from the cam.

The govt has made the roads now in a mess, and it is up to us alone to prove we are not in a fault.

Saw a nice bright red B180 yesterday..

SG vehicles - I guess that's a PI?

Nice rims..

Re: DVR

I think we can only give our due diligence, and that's it.

A small outlay. Even if we only use it one time in 10 years that will be worth the money.

Can you share where you did that, and the cost?

Thanks!

Just got a reply from my rep on the full manual mode:

It's possible!

You have to use the "I" setting, and then customise it to Manual..

My rep is a hard working chap, so if someone needs a rep, pm me, hope to give him more business  [laugh]

The F750 is by one of the sponsors on MCF.

The camera is about $700 for front and back while the battery is slightly more than $400 ..... I can't really remember actually but itz about there.

Genuine accidents are one thing. What's scary are those who deliberately try to get you to rear end them by cutting into your lane sharply or braking abruptly without reason!  Maybe the economy is bad and they are trying to generate revenue from another source!  Anyway, after watching a couple of those videos, I think a front camera at least is a must!

$400 for the battery? Can I ask what type of battery is it and how long does it last on one charge?  Does it get re-charged when the car engine is running like a car battery?
