Triathlon is not very expensive sport;

Swimming is cheap and free (in the sea) just a pair of goggles

Running is free everywhere (damage is just a pair of shoes of about $150)

Biking is the only costly one (damage is like around $500 to $1000) but cycling is free on roads

Participation fee: it used be around $110+ when I last did mine 5 years back (using early bird special) nowadays I heard is about $150++ or so; Can do in Bintan might be cheaper but also have its downsides

I stopped doing them since last 5 years after that Thadeus chap (young fellow only about 19) died whilst swimming.... that sent a chill down my spine as the swimming part is the scariest in the sea for 1.5km (olympic distance) and can end up in injury when a herd of swimmers swim too close and someones arm or legs can whack the living daylights out of you in our already muddied and non crystal clear waters off ECP ; visibility is zero, almost.

I read this young chap Thaddeus also collapsed after he crossed the finishing line..   Near or just after finishing line death is rather common, and it happens to all ages, not just the older folks. Stand chart got 2 cases I know off, both in their 20's. One just after finish line, and other a few hundred metre before the finish line.

Is he really Singaporean? I googled his name online and found this report which he(super unlikely someone has exactly the same name right?) wrote about being an exchange student in NUS.

Many would ask, why Singapore? Why choose an outgoing partner university that is just right across the border, from your country, Malaysia?http://oia.ncku.edu.tw/ezfiles/18/1018/img/1514/190758111.pdf

Anyway, his English gave me cancer  [lipsrsealed]

Wasn't Thaddeus 17 when he passed away? The one who passed away during the SEA games trial? He was my classmate. Healthy guy also can die suddenly.

Plastic chair falls on moving car along CTE; man hospitalised with neck pain and glass in throat

SINGAPORE - A man was taken to the hospital with neck pain and glass in his throat after a plastic chair fell from above and hit his car along the Central Expressway (CTE) in the wee hours of Monday (May 8).

Ms Carlers Thio, a 24-year-old DJ at club LUXI Dolls, told The Straits Times on Thursday (May 11) that she had been with her friend Alex Carlers on the way home from work just past midnight on Monday when she saw a red chair falling.

"We were driving on the CTE and right before we entered the Chin Swee tunnel, a red stool fell from above," said Ms Thio.

She did not see who threw it or where it had come from, but she said it could have fallen from a lorry travelling in the opposite direction, or someone could have thrown it from the overhead bridge.

Mr Carlers, her 32-year-old colleague, was driving when it happened.

"He screamed and swallowed little pieces of glass," she said. "I saw the chair from far. I saw it drop from above but I thought it was a red plastic bag."

Mr Carlers stopped the car only when the chair hit the windscreen, shattering it with "quite a big impact", said Ms Thio.

He had neck pain and Ms Thio had whiplash.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force told ST it was alerted to the accident which required ambulance assistance along CTE towards the Seletar Expressway at 12.30am on Monday.

The police said a 32-year-old man was taken conscious to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and that police investigations into the case of a rash act along CTE near Clemenceau Exit are ongoing.

Mr Carlers, a singer, was in the hospital for a day and a half and was discharged on Tuesday, Ms Thio said.

"Usually my baby is with me but thank God that day it was after work so my baby was not with me," she added.

"Now when we drive, right before we go into a tunnel we will look out."
