VES 2018

As owner of new car, you will never know whether you are getting VES rebate or not.

It is opaque to the extent in the calculation of new car price.

I thought most cars would have their rebate/deductions listed in the price list section of the cars in sgcarmart?

Even though it is listed, how do you know whether rebate has been included in sales price?

The ves rebate/surchage would normally have been factored into the price. But it is true that a 10k rebate may be factored into the price as anything between a 10k reduction to no change (and possibly even outside of these bounds), depending on market environment, demand and supply, competing models, the model's profit margin, etc. Eg I don't think Borneo passed on the full 10k ves surcharge that hit many of their cars back in jul/aug, because that would have made their cars uncompetitive.

I think the problem is

$100k car with $10k rebate. By right it's now $90k

What if

$100 car with $10k rebate factored in already. You are still paying $100k but now it's considered you got the rebate. Cos you don't know how much the car is supposed to cost in total. You can calculate everything but there is always the part of dealer margin which you don't know.

Or make it sweeter the $100k car is now $95k with $10k rebate factored in. So it's very vague.

Whatever is the listed price is whatever the dealer want to sell it for. It does not indicate if you are getting a good deal or not.

My two cents.

To make the VES system really above board and take away the AD's ability to profit from it by hiding it in the selling price, I propose this:

VES should be rebated or penalised to the owner after the car is registered and on the road.

LTA will send a rebate cheque to the registered owner directly within a month.

Those VES penalty owners will  have 1 month to pay up the penalty or be treated with same penalty as defaulting Road tax.

Anyone is welcome to shoot this idea down.

:D

I see what you mean. But not sure if it will really make any difference, since the ad/pi sets prices based on whatever they think can sell. So if you take away a 10k ves rebate from them, their initial reactio might be to raise prices by 10k,and they would maintain competitiveness with other car models or dealers. End result is extra 10k to take out loan for.

Personally, because I prefer to minimise loan, I'd prefer to pay all the arf, parf, coe, ves etc myself. But clearly not everyone wants this.

The government is still singing the VES song..

But if I read it correctly, if you are offered a 10k VES rebate, you actually have to repay that at the end? Or is it half of it?

Your parf value will minus $10k which end of the 10 year u lose $5k compared to a non rebate car.

It depends on whether you get the rebate or not.

If got rebate, your statement got problem.

This kind of scheme to give rebate is worse than no rebate. The dealer will makan most of the rebate that is deducted from you.

Ultimately, regardless VES band A1, A2, B, gov doesn't bother how much it will benefit the buyers about the rebates BECAUSE, in the first place, gov never encourage the people to buy a car. Hence there is always an open end for the dealers to set and earn their margin.
