Proper defender but not so confident with the ball but he has improved. Olivier Giroud is the worry for Chelsea as he is not happy now that he is effectively 3rd choice striker. I also don’t know what happened to Pedro as he was not in the match day squad nor being listed as injured.

All teams need to rotate with involvement in so many competitions, 4 in the case of the top 7 teams. It's an art to rotate yet keep the team winning as players need to adjust to each other and for the back 4, they need to defend as a unit so change in personnel can upset the rhythm n understanding. The level of play in EPL and UCL is high with fast tempo, pressing etc so players need to be fresh and alert. The team that keeps their players from being jaded will do well. Pool with their almost nvr changing front 3 is the most at risk if u ask me. Last season, they being k/o in the first round of the 2 domestic Cup competitions helped them tremendously. If they progress in both Cup competitions this season, they could be stretched.

In Pool's case, the starting 11 - plus maybe another 3-4 players - have been the "dependables", while the rest of the squad players, have so rarely played, that they are not likely to be trusted to be able to deliver, even in the domestic cups. This means that those like the front 3, are almost always playing, and don't get days off... so the likes of Brewster, Origi, Shaqiri, etc. don't get much chance to play. And if don't play, means not likely to be better and more consistent. In other words, this vicious cycle is quite worrisome...
Spring Moderator October 25, 2019 Author Share October 25, 2019 The 3 EPL clubs in UEL won last night and so 7/7 wins really paned out for EPL. I don't remember this ever happening though I could be wrong. Will this be another year of clean sweep for English teams in both European competitions? I certainly hope so but the draw for the k/o stages is the key. It would be a dream come true if 7 out of the 8 semi finalists in UCL and UEL were EPL teams

Spring Moderator October 29, 2019 Author Share October 29, 2019 This weekend VAR suddenly lowered the bar and overturned quite a few decisions. 1 penalty call was overturned (against Chelsea at Burnley), 4 penalties were awarded (2 at Norwich for United), 1 red card was awarded (against Saints), a goal was disallowed (against Arsenal) Also, till now after 100 matches, not a single time has the ref gone to look at the pitch side monitor which happens often at UCL, Euros and WC matches. Very confusing indeed........ 4

Reason behind this was not to undermine/overrule the ref who remained overall in charge. This created a situation which happened in the first 9 rounds of EPL where VAR was hesitant to overrule the refs and so this caused incidents like the tackle by Vertonghen on Deulofeu, Lindelof on Origi to go unpunished. On to Round 10 and suddenly the bar was lowered and many incidents were overturned (see my previous post). Point is that VAR can't have it 2 ways, if VAR is hesitant to overrule refs then get the refs to view themselves but if the lawmakers feel that it's a waste of time to view pitch side then do away with pitch side monitors altogether and let VAR be the decision maker. Rugby is using VAR so effectively and without controversy and why is EPL so different from their European counterparts on this?

Shit... if it had happened one week earlier, then got chance to have not dropped the 2 points for Pool... 😁

Yes this yellow card for Zaha being overturned is classic example of bar being lowered this round onwards as it's not clear and obvious. I'm sure it wouldn't have been given last week. They can't be changing the rules suddenly in mid season. As for pitch side monitor, I do accept that it might cause a delay but then why put it there if decision is such and anyway why is EPL not in line with other European Leagues? Surely it can't be that delay is not acceptable in EPL but acceptable in other Leagues as football is a universal sport so rules shld be uniform. The other frustrating part is that EPL delayed implementing VAR compared to Serie A, Bundesliga, Liga etc n so shld hv been wiser as they shld hv learnt lessons from the early implementers.

Rugby and cricket uses VAR and the decisions are solely made by the VAR officials with no viewing of pitch side monitors by the on field refs/umpires. For some reason, football being football and always wanting to be different from other sports chose to have pitch side monitors so as to allow on field refs to have the final say. But EPL has a different interpretation or at least they want to do it differently which creates this confusion. In short, there must be some uniformity across all leagues both at club level as well as Internationals in my opinion
Spring Moderator November 1, 2019 Author Share November 1, 2019 Odds on JM being the next Gunners Mgr has tumbled apparently but read another report saying no way will Arsenal Board sanction JM to be next Gunners Mgr. Like the recent rumour that he maybe the next Spurs Mgr, I would take it with a pinch of salt. That said, it does make sense for serial winner Mourinho to be Gunners boss just like what I posted previously on the possibility of him taking over at Spurs. But for Gunners case, I seriously doubt he will be appointed as it’s a real clash of styles ie his pragmatism vs the beautiful game which was Arsenal’s DNA under Wenger. Don't think Gunners fans will welcome him as well? https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7634785/Would-Jose-Mourinho-suitable-Arsenal-manager.html ↡ Advertisement
