Question. If you buy 3rd party and get into a serious accident where you are disabled, then cannot claim if you are the party at fault?

I drive a coe car and wanted 3rd party only. But comprehensive was but $50 more. So comprehensive in the end.  At least I get the option of claiming from insurance vs scrapping.

My mistake. $50 was the previous car. Current Suzuki Swift is $200 difference. AXA insurance.

Apparently yes, I can claim own damage. As I have NCD protector so it won't be affected. Though I think premium will still go up. Which make no sense for me to claim myself for the repairs.

Claiming own damaged when the other party is liable to my understanding is to speed up the process.

I had this experience many years ago. My car was rear ended and my workshop advised me to claim my own insurance first. My insurer would then claim from the other party.

No guarantee that 3rd party insurer will pay 100% of what your insurer paid.

I remember that assessors from both parties inspected the car before the repair was carried out. In my case, there was no hassle. The third party assessor disputed a dent on the hatch, but, later he accepted and apologised to me for the unnecessary delay.

If 3rd party assessor was on site, why do you need to do own claim 1st?

The inspection was done at the workshop not in my presence.

Neutral Newbie

Thanks for all the responses. Have decided to claim total loss from 3rd party as their surveyor deem the damage as "not economical to repair", although if claiming my own policy, my insurance have the "budget" to repair the car.

However looking at the damage done, I doubt the safety will be there even after repairs. And with different assessment from both surveyors, it gives me more doubt.
