I think Russia assumed that it would go down like Crimea. They weren’t prepared for an extended special military operation where the opponent was well informed and getting a steady stream of high tech weaponry.

That being said - the United States themselves aren’t perfect, the US Navy in particular hasn’t had a great record of late, which points to a general erosion of discipline and professionalism, even though Top Gun: Maverick would have you believe otherwise.

The same concern for the regions are having referendum. Once they get absorbed into Russia federation, the citizens there might get drafted and put on fight against their own ukrianian soldiers almost immediately.

Almost same playbook as the used during ww2. The scene from Stalingrad battle almost half of the soldiers chiong towards the german without arms. Literally trying to overwhelm the enemy with sheer number of bodies. That's why no need training and weapons for some.
