I am sure over and on top of the cost of rebuilding of the bridge, the economic cost of the disruption will be added to the insurance bill..... no billions no count...

It will be another round of inflation globally.

. The Singapore-flagged vessel that collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, United States had experienced a "momentary loss of propulsion", said the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)

. As a result, the vessel was "unable to maintain the desired heading" and collided with the bridge on Tuesday (March 26) at about 1.30pm Singapore time

. The authority said that investigators from the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau and MPA are travelling to Baltimore, Maryland, where the bridge is located

. The vessel involved, named Dali, is a container vessel with 22 crew members on board at the time of the incident

. No injuries were reported among the ship's crew members, as search and rescue efforts for casualties continue

"...The vessel was reported to have dropped its anchors as part of the vessel’s emergency procedures prior to its impact with the bridge. The vessel was under pilotage at the time of the incident," said MPA..."

Supersonic

ship lost power, lost control and slammed into the bridge pylon.

it send out SOS, and the authorities blocked the bridge.

nothing more to say, no conspiracy, it's an accident.

I think one mission of MPA is the make sure we have our own  independent investigation and the USA doesn't do a "Taiwan airport accident investigation" on us.

it looks like the ship lost power, the lights were going on and off, very unusual. it then lost control and slam into the bridge.

above the bridge you can see the last few cars passing by, and then the bridge collapse.. quite fortunate, there was lesser traffic.

I read. Lucky and unlucky

Lucky - it happened at night so fewer cars and fewer casualties

Unlucky - cos it happened at night, those who fell into the water have lesser chance of survival cos water is colder plus harder to find in the dark

Knn...should just decommission this magnet for disaster ship...let our subs use it as target for their live firing...then fill underneath the grand East Coast plan...😅

there are fatalities involved, so reckon Captain will be arrested and charged for negligence for a start.

May not be the captain, as there were reportedly two harbour pilots on board. They are locals who are familiar with the waters around their harbour and would pilot large vessels into open waters.

However, if claims of mechanical failure are true, the focus will fall onto the maintenance of the ship……

the bridge doesn't seem crash buffer against ship collision.  compare to others like Penang Bridge

Penang old bridge opened 1985

Key bridge opened 1977, which may account for the difference in design philosophy. That being said, with the volume of marine traffic there, it's easy to say with hindsight that they should have done some upgrades later. BUT... for a container ship of this DWT and moving at 8kt, not easy to stop it with a small barrier.

these vessels work 24/7

not unusual for a 9yo to have had multiple incidents. if minor, repair and carry on. Ship crew likely to be different anyway.

Capt is always held responsible, even if got pilot, got tug, got whatever.

I think it will be the company/owner of the ship that will kena jialat jialat.

At the minimum they will kena sue until pants drop.

I thought insurance will cover up to an amount and most ships are owned by single purpose shell company precisely to manage such catastrophic events, things like oil spills, dropping anchor and damaging a pipeline, etc.  All pant dropping events.
