Does it matter which car is made where?

 

Most importantly the owner loves it. But then I feel that Optra beats the rest of the Koreans hands down in the same category.

 

The rival for Optra is the Altis. We should thank StarAUto for bringing in cars with standard safety features intact and priced reasonably too.

GM bot over Daewoo ... just a change in name ...

 

Perhaps the forum master should remove the Daewoo logo from this forum to avoid misunderstanding. As far as we know, Daewoo no longer exist as a car company.

Ok, let's get one thing clear: Daewoo as a car company still exists, and is being run by Nick Reilly, who came from Vauxhall in 2002. One of the cars they produce is the Nubira, or Lacetti, which is marketed here as the Chevrolet Optra.

 

Now, GM Daewoo was formed in October 2002, after the Giant Machine completed its takeover of the struggling Korean maker. The Optra was launched in mid-2003, indicating that the new team hardly had time to make changes to the tooling processes, let alone influence the design of the car. All of which means that the Optra is about as American as the Ford Laser, which is to say, not very much at all beyond the badge.

 

Please don't think that I'm knocking the Optra in any way. In fact, if the Koreans can produce a car as competitive as many of you say it is (I haven't had the chance to take a good look at it myself), then all the better. But please, enough of this 'Optra is not a Korean car' elitism. It was designed from the ground up as nothing but a Daewoo. The first all-new car to emerge from the new company will be a soft-roader, due mid-2005.

So the comment on Optra is an American car stand wah. If you're from NUS, who cares whether you're Indain, Chinese, Malay or angmo. The are all Nusians wah.

that's true, in most markets it's sold as daewoo lacetti. at best, one can say it's a good korean car but to deny that it is one is ......

All I was saying is that despite their cars being built in S.A, BMWs are still German cars. Because they were designed (and I don't mean just aesthetically) for the German company. Now, if someone took their cars and marketed them in Singapore as Fords, would we consider them American? Obviusly not! And so it is with Daewoo and Chevy...

I guess one has to really look at what constitutes the brand.

 

All this talk about South African made BMWs being African is bull...and we all know it. Why? Who the hell would want to buy an African car?

Because at the end of the day BMW is a German company/brand.

 

The Altis is made in Thailand, but it is still a what car?...a Toyota (Japanese brand).

 

Same for the Chevrolet.

So the brand is American, the various models may be built from Stateside to bloody Timbucktoo for all I care...but it is still a Chevy (American brand)...which is part of?...GM (also American company)! How can I make it any clearer? The Chevrolet Optra is what we get in Singapore. Not the bloody Daewoo Lecetti, Buick Excelle, Suzuki Forenza etc. All are the "same basic design", "same platform", "same range of engines" ...and guess what?..."same parent company GM"!!!

 

To put it crudely in an example. If I buy your house, guess who owns your toilet bowl?

So GM(an American co.) owns Daewoo's designs, production plants, staff etc.

 

It is not the design origin, nor the production origin that dictates the brand, but it is the brand that decides based on cost, marketability/image, and other factors.
