  5. http://www.ryot.org/how-hollywood-got-captain-phillips-dead-wrong/408561 What you won’t see in the movie trailer and what the mainstream media tends to ignore is why Somali piracy started in the first place: foreign companies are illegally over-fishing Somali waters and dumping large quantities of nuclear and hazardous waste off of Somalia’s coast. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_Somalia A United Nations report and several news sources have suggested that piracy off the coast of Somalia was caused in part by illegal fishing. According to the DIW and the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, the dumping of toxic waste in Somali waters by foreign vessels also severely constrained the ability of local fishermen to earn a living. In response, the fishermen began forming armed groups to stop the foreign ships. They eventually turned to hijacking commercial vessels for ransom as an alternate source of income.
  6. Watched Captain Phillips over the weekends. I'd recommend this movie to those who like thriller "kan cheong" movies like those from Danzel Washington. It stars Tom Hanks. Roughly, the plot is about a cargo ship that was hijacked off the coast of Somalia by pirates and how the Captain (called Richard Phillips) and it's crew was rescued by the US Navy of CTF 151. It's about 2 hours. The built up of the movie right from the start, to tension of the rescue was topnotched. But it's the enpowering ending scene which blows the movie away. Tom Hank's acting was topnotch. The somali Pirates are not bad actors too. Another scene worth mentioning that most people overlook is the start scene where Phillips converse with his wife. There are abit of contravosy on the accuracy of the movie but after I did the research, I'd say 80% is accurate of what happen and some are altered for dramatic reasons. 4/5 for me
  7. When a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) captain was sentenced for speeding at 195km/h on May 8, he was not worried about the one-year driving disqualification. Instead, Yang Chee Hwa wanted the district court to lower his maximum $1,000 fine, because it would have an adverse effect on his promotion prospects and performance bonuses. But in the judgment released this week, District Judge John Ng said Yang should have to bear the consequences of his irresponsible act. He said: "I could not justifiably order him to pay a fine of $999 for him to avoid the collateral consequences of his conviction and sentence. The maximum fine and one-year disqualification are also to serve as a general deterrence to other speedsters." Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...jected-20130530
  8. Source: AsiaOne Photos: The New Paper, Lianhe Wanbao, Patrick Loh A lorry driver crashed into railings, a traffic light, three vehicles and a road sign at Choa Chu Kang Way, before assaulting an SMRT bus driver who had honked at his stalled vehicle which was blocking traffic on Monday (Oct 22). The mayhem began Monday morning, after the 53-year-old male driver apparently lost control of his lorry and veered left onto the pedestrian pavement at Choa Chu Kang West flyover and knocked down part of the railings, witnesses said. Then, as it moved along the pavement, it knocked down a traffic light at the cross junction before hitting two cars and a taxi travelling towards Kranji Expressway. Two of the vehicles were badly dented, but instead of stopping, the driver made several attempts to reverse his lorry back onto the road. After he drove off, the lorry took down a huge road sign along Choa Chu Kang Way. He kept going until the junction of Choa Chu Kang Way and Choa Chu Kang Avenue 3, where the lorry stalled. His trail of destruction covered about 500m of Choa Chu Kang Way. By then, the SMRT bus driver had found his way blocked by the lorry. The 47-year-old at the wheel was driving an off-duty bus, said an SMRT spokesman. The lorry driver, believed to have been agitated by the honking, went up to the bus and allegedly attacked the bus driver, Lianhe Wanbao reported. When SMRT's Bus Operations Control Centre (BOCC) was informed of the assault, the police, an ambulance, and SMRT- 's Field Team were summoned to the scene, the spokesman added. The police were alerted about the five-vehicle incident at about 7.50am. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it sent two ambulances to the scene. Both drivers were taken to the National University Hospital. The bus driver had suffered head and facial injuries, while the lorry driver complained of lower back pain. Engineer Patrick Loh, 37, one of the drivers involved in the accident, said his red Toyota Altis was the second of the three vehicles hit by the lorry. His girlfriend, who was in the front with him, was shooting a video of the collision between the lorry and a black car on the lane beside them when the lorry hit their car. Fortunately, they escaped unhurt. Said Mr Loh: "When it happened, the thought that came to my mind was 'I'm lucky'." But the front of his car was badly dented and had to be towed away. Retiree Cheng Peng Onn, 59, saw the aftermath of the accident. He was taking a walk with his wife along Choa Chu Kang Way when he came across the carnage. "The lorry driver looked a little 'blur', like he was unable to focus," Mr Cheng said. The retiree said the driver spent a long time on the bus with the police. "It took a lot of coaxing by the police officers before the lorry driver finally agreed to come down from the bus and get into an ambulance," he said. This is not the first time an accident has happened in the vicinity. Teacher Ken Kor, 38, who heard about yesterday's incident from his wife, said he witnessed another accident there three days ago. "Although there are traffic lights along Choa Chu Kang Way, drivers still speed. This happens when traffic is light," said Mr Kor, who lives in a nearby block. A police spokesman said the lorry driver was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. SMRT is assisting the police with the investigations.
  9. A disgrace to himself, his family, his unit and ultimately the SAF... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1149338/1/.html Army captain jailed 16 weeks By Alvina Soh | Posted: 26 August 2011 1801 hrs SINGAPORE: An Army captain with a gambling addiction, on Friday was jailed 16 weeks and fined S$40,400 for receiving loans in exchange for providing confidential information about military projects. Phua Poh Sim, 31, who has been suspended on no-pay leave by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), pleaded guilty to two charges of corruptly obtaining gratification in the form of loans, which amounted to more than S$53,000. Three other similar charges were taken into consideration. Phua received the money in mid-2008 from Richard Yow Wah, who was the managing director of Certified Aerospace Singapore. Investigations revealed that Phua had chalked up debts of about S$100,000 after gambling at casinos onboard cruise ships. Phua borrowed from various sources, including from his colleague, Major John Cheong Chee Wai, who later introduced Phua to Yow. Phua told Yow that he was involved in project work with the SAF and he could help Yow's business by sharing information with him. On May 3, 2008, Phua went to Yow's home and passed him a set of documents containing confidential information relating to military projects, which the SAF was keen to purchase. These included information on the new army combat uniform. Phua continued to provide confidential information to Yow in return for loans on various occasions. In mitigation, Phua's lawyer Mr Quek Mong Hua said that Phua had a distinguished record where he was awarded several scholarships and medals for his good service. This included the prestigious SAF overseas merit scholarship. He also came from a family with a military background as his father is a warrant officer and his brother is also a captain in the SAF. In addition, Mr Quek urged the court to consider the nature of the information revealed and said that Phua was mindful to not reveal information that was highly damaging. Mr Quek also noted that Phua was due for a promotion to the rank of Major during the time of the offences and had confessed to his misdeeds voluntarily during his interviews. However, deputy public prosecutor Adrian Ooi said that Phua's offences were a "disgrace to the SAF" and had compromised the public image of Singapore as a corruption-free country. Mr Ooi added that as an officer, Phua was not allowed to take loans in any case. The tall and bespectacled man remained emotionless during sentencing. Phua could have been jailed up to five years and jailed S$100,000 for each charge. - CNA/ck
  10. Feb 14, 2011 Army captain pleads guilty to being a loanshark runner By Khushwant Singh A CAPTAIN with the Singapore Armed Forces, who moonlighted as a runner for an illegal moneylender, was caught by a debtor whose house he vandalised last October. Kheng Kok Keong, 34, pleaded guilty in a district court on Monday to four charges of harassment. Seventeen other charges will be taken into consideration by the judge when passing sentence on Thursday. A district court heard that from June last year, he had scribbled 'O$P$' - shorthand for 'Owe money, pay money' - on walls, splashed paint on flats or used super glue to seal up keyholes to prevent the occupants from unlocking doors or gates, 21 times. Investigations revealed that Kheng had an outstanding loan with an illegal moneylender known only as Ah Seng, and agreed to harass other debtors in return of $2,000 to be deducted from his debt every month. His lawyer G. Dinagaran said that his client had racked up losses after visiting the Resorts World casino and was forced to borrow from a loanshark. It was the incessant harassment by Ah Seng's runners that forced Kheng to agree to be a runner too, the lawyer explained. Kheng, who was last serving as a logistics officer and drawing a monthly salary of $5,000, will also lose his career of 14 years with this conviction, Mr Dinagaran added. How can 1 be forced to borrow fm loan sharks? Kuku lawyer, like that oso dare to plead wif judge. Runners are paid $2k per month. Not bad leh, just to scribble some words and do painting.
