Eight people were injured when two privately run buses crashed head-on late on Thursday night. The accident along Alexandra Road, near an overhead bridge outside the Hewlett-Packard building, also involved a car, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Among those injured was one of the bus drivers, who suffered leg injuries. The 50-year-old was trapped in his seat until SCDF officers freed him half an hour later using a hydraulic spreader. OLD cars are a dying breed here. - By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent Only 5 per cent of the half a million cars here are aged 10 years or more, estimates by The Straits Times based on official figures suggest. At the end of last year, more cars - 7.1 per cent - were that old, going by Land Transport Authority (LTA) data. In 2000, it was 16.6 per cent. On the flip side, the percentage of new cars has continued to rise. About 85 per cent of cars today are under four years old. In 2000, this group made up only 38 per cent of the car population. Car enthusiast and doctor Ivor Thevathasan, 64, lamented: 'The culture here is 'new is good'.' He called this a shame because cars were a part of people's memories or history. But the majority of motorists do not share his view. Despite fees to extend the lifespan of cars beyond 10 years being at rock bottom, most motorists are not keen to keep their cars. In the first six months of this year, the average fees for certificate of entitlement (COE) revalidations were $12,565 for cars up to 1,600cc and $14,051 for cars above 1,600cc. The rates were at least double this amount as recently as 2004. Even so, the LTA said there were only 595 car COE revalidations in the first six months of this year - down from 984 in the same period last year and 722 in 2004. Manager F.K. Leong, 55, is among those who see no reason to drive an old car. He changes his every two to three years. He said: 'If I can drive a new car without having to fork out a lump sum, why not?' Sliding car prices in the past 10 years or so have made it possible for motorists like him to trade in an old car for a down payment on a new one, and to continue instalment payments that are about the same as their previous car. 'I see car ownership as a lifelong lease,' he said. However, this trend may tail off soon because car prices are on the rise. Also, those who bought cars in recent years took out huge loans. This means they would have to pay a lot more to switch to a new vehicle. Car owners might therefore have no choice but to keep their rides a bit longer from now on. And here lies the irony: Cars may not be as durable as before. 'The old Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Mercedeses and such were made to last,' Dr Ivor noted. The president of the Malaysia Singapore Vintage Car Register said that cars in the past were largely mechanical, but were now increasingly electronic. 'How long will the electronics last?' he asked.

Some of the models launched in Singapore this year were especially memorable. Most of them managed to break new ground in one way or another, either in styling and segmentation, or packaging and presentation. We look back at eight of them: BMW 645Ci: The 6 Series was revived after more than a decade and re-created the segment as a huge coupe with a 4.4-litre V8 engine. The powerful engine complemented the powerful haunches and the image was potent enough for a couple of dozen buyers to plonk down their deposits even before it had arrived. Porsche 911: The icon with the instantly recognisable profile made a statement with its styling - not because it was new, but because it was old. However, the retro look only enhanced the prodigious performance of the new and more powerful 3.8-litre Carrera S. Two words are all that's needed to describe it - classic magic. Mercedes-Benz SLK: The quintessential hairdresser's car finally got revamped, thus gaining much needed design and dynamic credibility. The drop-top sports car with the revolutionary steel roof now has the looks, engine and suspension for a great drive. Opel Astra: Another German which underwent an extreme makeover, the Astra was transformed from dowdy to detectable. Drastic changes were also made to its build-quality so that it can at least proclaim it is now almost on a par with the VW Golf. Mazda RX8: Just when everyone thought the rotary engine was dead and buried, the brilliant RX8 zoom-zoomed in with its snazzy styling and suicide doors. It looks sharp, handles well, has four seats and amazing detailing. The only problem is that you sometimes wonder if the designers got carried away with the clever little touches. Honda Odyssey: Also known as the other clever Japanese for its origami-like packaging. Somehow, Honda managed to create a full-sized seven-seat MPV that's not much higher than a two-litre saloon. Along with car-like handling and a very car-like profile. Toyota Corolla Altis: Not so much memorable as significant, the Altis is special for switching its country of origin in mid-model life. As the lower cost of ownership widened its customer reach and increased sales, prejudice towards Thai-made cars was also whittled away. Now you know why Toyota is a juggernaut. Proton Gen.2: Also special if only for its styling. But it's a good start for the Malaysian carmaker which has until now relied on ageing Japanese technology. With its Volkswagen alliance, Lotus engineering and low cost Malaysian labour, we can only imagine what other tantalising treats are in store.
