Zheng hoo lang poh mata liao http://news.asiaone.com/news/singapore/facebook-user-draws-flak-posting-disparaging-remarks-about-filipinos?page=0%2C0 Facebook user draws flak for posting disparaging remarks about Filipinos Wednesday, October 9, 2013 - 00:00Chai Hung Yin The New Paper SINGAPORE - She described Filipinos as "poor", "smelly from cleaning toilets" and "uneducated". She also mocked Miss Philippines Megan Young, 23, for winning the Miss World 2013 in Bali on Sept 28. Using the name Devina DeDiva, her racial slurs, posted on her Facebook social networking timeline, invoked the ire of netizens and prompted one Singaporean to lodge a police report. Ms Devina had posted: "Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them Ha Ha Ha." The post attracted 20 likes and 468 shares within a day. It was not clear when she posted the status update as the latest search for the Facebook account turned up a message that said the page was unavailable. It is likely the page was removed. But outraged netizens were able to capture screenshots of the post and its comments before the account was deleted. Others have tried to establish Ms Devina's identity. She was initially thought to be an Indian national, but was later said to be a Singaporean Indian. She is said to be a student at SIM University and also works as a laboratory analyst. Her LinkedIn networking website account is believed to have also been deleted. The screenshots have been re-posted on other websites with scathing responses to her post. Many defended Filipinos. Someone named Manoj Sharma posted: "Filipino girls r cute, humble and honest as far as I know. I am glad to have great friends from the Philippines." But that invited a reply from Ms Devina, who posted: "They r poor, smelly from cleaning toilets & uneducated." When another netizen hinted that she is ignorant, she replied: "Ignorant? Get ur vocab checked dude majority r maids & 1 won such a title! It's shocking & dumb!" Photo Gallery: Racial slurs against Miss World winner Megan Young Click on thumbnail to view photos. Source: AFP / Reuters / Internet 'Student' When contacted by The New Paper, SIM University confirmed that it has a student going by the name cited by netizens. Its spokesman said: "We are doing our due diligence to establish the facts of the case. If ascertained that our code of conduct for students has been violated, we will take appropriate disciplinary actions." International media has reported that Ms Devina has lost her job following her postings, quoting "a reliable source". The International Business Times, an online publication headquartered in the United States, reported that she was "fired from her position as an assistant teacher of a school being run by Filipino superiors". She is believed to have created another Facebook account and continued her rants there. The police confirmed that a police report was made and they are looking into the matter. A Singaporean, who wanted to be known as Mr Anthony, confirmed that he had made the police report on Thursday at about 1pm. The 27-year-old civil servant told The New Paper: "I'm concerned with the comments made by this person, especially when racial harmony is threatened and I see this being spread online. "Racial harmony is very important and these kind of comments should not be tolerated." He said that he first read about the posts on a forum. He then logged into his Facebook account and saw screenshots of the comments that have been re-posted. He said: "I want to inform the police that there's such a thing and for them to find out, if there's any offence committed."

Lui Eng Teck, 44, pleaded guilty to using a bat to hit Mr Eng Eng Leng, 45, on his left arm at a road shoulder of Tampines Expressway (TPE) on May 13 last year. A district court heard that Mr Eng was driving a lorry at a slip road of TPE when he gave way to a SBS Transit bus due to the merging lane. Suddenly, Lui's car appeared on the left of the victim's lorry and cut in between the victim and the SBS bus, forcing the victim to brake hard to avoid a collision. The victim sounded his horn to alert Lui of his reckless driving. Lui then slowed his vehicle down, forcing the victim to do the same. Mr Eng then signalled to Lui to pull over the road shoulder of the expressway. Both men got down from their vehicles. While walking towards each other, Lui turned back and pulled out a bat which he used to hit the victim twice on the left arm. When the victim said he was going to call the police, Lui drove off. Lui, who had his sentence deferred till Sept 29 to settle his working arrangements, had a similar conviction 10 years ago. He had also been convicted of reckless and dangerous driving. He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for voluntarily causing hurt.

Singapore police said in a statement that the group, off-duty at the time, were involved "in an incident of disorderly and boisterous behaviour" at their special compound on June 13. The incident followed a discussion by a larger number of officers on the issue of their salary scale, the statement said. Eight people were injured and had to be treated, but no one was seriously hurt, the police said. No further details were given. A contingent of Gurkhas, known for their bravery and discipline, serves in Singapore to guard some of its most sensitive facilities such as the airport and embassies. "Apart from the group which misconducted themselves, the rest were not involved in any acts of indiscipline," the police said. Many young Nepalese men aspire to become Gurkhas because they view it as a way out of poverty. The online encyclopedia Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurkha_Contingent) says around 370 are selected annually from 20,000 applicants, with 140 chosen for the Singapore police force and the rest for the British Army. It says around 2,000 currently serve in Singapore, many accompanied by their families. The police said they are investigating the matter as an internal one. 16. May 12, 2008 Man fined for punching cop after too many drinks By Khushwant Singh DRUNK after a jug each of beer and stout and shots of whisky, a sales manager punched and abused a police officer. On Monday, the 53-year-old was fined $4,000. Tiong Sin Lip, who had pleaded guilty, looked relieved on hearing about the fine, as his transgression could have landed him in jail for up to two years. The court heard that just past 2am on March 7, he turned up at the Paramount Hotel in Marine Parade in a taxi, already drunk, and sat on the stairway leading to the hotel. The cabby sought help from the hotel staff, as Tiong had not paid the fare. When the staff asked him about this, he let loose on them a torrent of abuse, but he paid up - and promptly fell asleep on the stairway. The police were called in, but when they woke him up, he turned aggressive and took a swing at Staff Sergeant Mahady Omar's jaw, which doctors later found slightly tender. The maximum penalty for causing hurt was increased from a $1,000 fine and a year's jail to a $5,000 fine and two years' jail for offences committed from Feb 1 this year. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_236637.html wat type of statement is tat??? slightly tender??? ... go market buy fish or beef?
  17. Dow Jones journalist fined $1,000 for punching cabby By Khushwant Singh A FINANCIAL journalist got into a tiff with a cabby who did not have change for a $50 note in October last year. Andrew Bevan Jones, 35, of Dow Jones, then punched cabby Irwan Shah Saharim, 33, in the nose, at the driveway of Block 3C of East Point Green Condominium in Simei Street 3 at about 5.30am that day. Mr Irwan was treated at Changi General Hospital as an outpatient for a fractured nasal bridge. On Tuesday, Jones was fined $1,000 after he pleaded guilty to the charge. A district court heard that both men could not agree to drive to a 7-Eleven store to get change for the $25 fare and when Jones tried to leave the cab, Mr Irwan Shah stopped him. Jones then punched the cabby. Both men then started arguing again as Mr Irwan Shah tried to claim money from Jones to consult a doctor. Neighbours awakened by the shouting match called security. Two guards arrived and managed to calm down Jones, who by then had paid Irwan $50. As Jones was waiting for the lift to return to his unit, Mr Irwan shouted: 'You bxxxxxd, you better watch your back. I know where you live.' Jones immediately turned around and another bout of pushing and shoving ensued, during which Mr Irwan fell. A security guard persuaded Jones to go home. Jones told police that he drank about four glasses of beer at a pub before he boarded the taxi. Asking the court for leniency, lawyer P.E. Ashokan said that Jones has been working here since October 2006 and has never got into trouble before. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_232280.html He also said that Jones had offered to pay the fare with his credit card or get change from his apartment but Mr Irwan refused both options. Mr Ashokan also said that it was rather surprising that the cabby, having worked all night, did not have sufficient change. Agreeing, District Judge F.G. Remedios said that a jail term in this case would not be appropriate. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_232280.html now we also know where he lives....
