Last week, my highly educated fren contacted me and poured out his sorrows to me. He has PHD and is jobless for 2.5yrs liao. Now doing part time job at MOE as invigillator. He still looking for full-time employment.

Last year he applied to MFA, Mindef, SPH and PA which are relevant to his studies(political science) but were unsuccessful.

How to help him?

Me not so highly educated and dont know what kind of job suitable to his type of studies.

Qualification too high even govt sector also don't want to employ him? Or his expectation too fussy, that's why couldn't find a full-time job?

manage his expectations and apply to one of the IHLs.  Start part time and then get a feel of it.  Teaching is not for everyone, so best he tries first.

you can pm me and i can provide you details and i can assess him if need be

There are just too many highly educated people out there and not enough jobs for them. Many a times companies do not need highly educated but rather highly skilled.

Lower expectation is the only way.

Or teach since he is already at MOE.

Some people get PhDs because they do not want to enter workforce. Some get because they are more interested in a field than anyone else.

Some PhDs publish many papers, some are based on correspondence courses.

Political Science is a very specialised field. Maybe he can try to link up with editors, produce more books etc to beef up his portfolio? Can also link up with social enterprises for more exposure. Those Govt institutions stated generally don't value a PhD as much as a first class Honours, offered to scholars who signed on in their early twenties or even before that.

Even for those with PhDs, the backing credentials can be highly varied. Organisations still assess holistically the quality of the candidate beyond his paper qualifications.

Is there such a thing called "qualification too high"? I mean...surely we have come across ppl doing jobs that are not relevant to what they have studied. It's common. How are they able to find jobs and yet there are still highly educated who are unable to do so? Is there too much to loose or too much at stake for them?

Most times when you find a job it's how you market or present yourself to your potential employer. Many brilliantly intellectual ppl lack social skills and many lacking in academic performance have brilliant social networks.

IMO knowing ppl will get you to many places. If in his previous job he's like hiding in a corner, keeping low profile that's not going to help.

I dont know the reason behind the rejection. I dont think he is fussy. He is a mama's boy.

He is not into teaching I think. The job at MOE is only a part time job until a real full-time job comes along.

If you got any MOH or similar bio science job available, let me know. He may be able to apply. But I dont think he can be a lab technician/chemist/admin job, over-qualified.

It's very sad, now market not good, it's not easy to find a job

If really cannot find a job, rather than waiting, maybe can start up a business

This beats waiting, the longer the person is out of job, the more difficult and chances of getting a new job is significantly reduced

Its true, too highly qualified can be a problem.

How to lower his expectations when employers not willing to employ a PHD holder as a lab technician?

He is in MOE as a part time, pass time job. Dont think he is into teaching.

Some people get PhDs because they do not want to enter workforce. Some get because they are more interested in a field than anyone else.

Great advice. He is pretty introvert. A mama's boy.

Actually start up a business don't need to be in the same field, this one is really up to him Liao

Determination to succeed is more important, it's either make or break

Go for something low capital would be better

If possible, take up Uncle RadX's offer is good

If he is a real PhD holder he would have done some assistant teaching on the way to attaining his qualification, running tutorials and his own lectures.

Even tuition centres would be keen to get a PhD holder on their roster, to teach GP if nothing else.

It is a matter of what he sees, or does not see himself doing, only.

If he thinks he can be slotted into a mid/senior management position on basis of his PhD, he is very wrong. This is not a technical or R&D field where that is possible and even for those fields you would have to be a perfect fit to be slotted to head the team or lab.

Unfortunately, the string of failures he has had with all the government bodies would have counted against him. He should seek employment in the private sector for 3-5 years before trying to find safe harbour in the government sector.
