First thing first, if you are not interested in Copen then why bother to check out this thread. I see gingerdip is just stating her view on 80-90km/h on a Copen, and you drag on to performance motoring. Oh please... [:p]

And also you talked about PERFORMANCE on a kei car. Oh please x2 [laugh]

If you got the dough, spend it. Or maybe just create another thread "I rather splurge 80k on a used Lotus rather than Copen" and carry out your discussion from there. [cool]

some people very funny, come into a thread for daihatsu copen, which is obviously a small kei car with convertible capabilities.. and talk about practicality and extreme performance motoring.

people who are potential buyers of copen dont need that extra space, can live with a lifestyle car.. dont need to hear lectures on practicality right [laugh]

some people who go for such cars probably treat the copen as the second car. but people who buy wish.. usually (not 100% though) means don't have second car [cool]

fake dough.. alot of "what ifs" situation.. [:)]

Ignore the troll.

Value lies in perception. And cars are not just about performance and/or practicality. There are other areas a car buyer can attach value to, intangible aspects, such as the feeling the car gives you and the love for a certain look of car.

My other family car is a Wish, which I frequently drive aside from my SSS. If assuming both are similarly priced (second hand market), I would take the SSS despite Wish being much more practical and offer better (?) performance, at least on the highway.

Why? Simply because I enjoy shifting gears and going around corners much more than ferrying a huge family and luggage around (which I don't even have!) What more, SSS suits my image more. Wish is for daddies and the uncle next door.

See? Don't need to look very far. I attach a greater value to SSS because I perceive it gives me more satisfaction for the buck.

Yeah bro, Copen being a lifestyle car for me, performance wise is secondary. I would expect that bro to be more mature rather than dissing people here. Not that I'm "defending" Copen because I'm driving one. ^_^

Bro I love SSS. Really want to have one in the future, the manual one of course. And the fuel consumption is good I heard! [:)]

Bro I said stock STI, not modded once. We take the 1996 Elise for example. Weighing 725kg output of 118bhp doing a 5.8sec on century sprint. Are you sure you the doing the math correctly?

And also you must take out engine capacity into consideration.

Elise '96 - 725kg / 118bhp / 1800cc

Copen - 800kg / 120bhp / 660cc

Meaning to match power output of the Copen with 120bhp, an 1.6L engine will need 300odd horses.

Yes i was referring to the stock STI. I don't think it is accurate that you can use the Elise as a bench mark as it is still 75 kg lighter. The lower the bhp the more impact additional weight can make. A stock STI does about 5 seconds in 0-100 and might be even faster if it was launched. I think the modded Copen can keep up with 1st gear at best.

Does this mean a stripped out Copen can run a straight line as fast as a Elise?

Correct me if am wrong, I think FWD/RWD, overall chassis rigidity, transmission..all makes a difference if talking about net power from a lightweight car..

Yes bro it all make a difference. Using Elise, as the horsepower it's almost equivalent to a modified Copen. 120bhp is the max you can squeeze out of a 660cc engine I guess. In japan there are stroker kits available to increase engine capacity. Power DTM (Japan) successfully modified a Copen with 150bhp. Faster than a Type R the boss claimed.

Bro it's pretty difficult to strip a Copen down further I guess, the bonnet roof and rear are made of aluminum. Guess the best is to reduce driver's weight and seats. A more extreme measure is to remove the roof hydraulics to lighten the car further. And by then maybe can be as fast as an Elise.

Karnaugh > for the 1st and 2nd gear parring with STI, its true and from a very reliable source. And his Copen is very fast, I've personally seen him on the road. And for all I know that Copen still remains on a kei car engine cap rating 660cc.

Owner of a copen here.... what is the meaning of COPEN is comparable to STI for the 1st and 2nd gear???

Does anyone drive with the 1st and 2nd gear only?

You should compare to a Impreza 1.5 or 1.6L not STI... there is until 5th to 6th gear to top speed....

No doubt it can be faster than a sunny..... even with the speed limiter removed... the max speed is only 180km/h... which is higher than a 1.5l Suzuki swift

Would you care to share the 0-400m timing with us?

The above makes a difference for all cars not only light weight cars. Surely a stripped out Copen can outrun a 96 Elise but what is the point? It is meant to be a lifestyle Kei car and the car doesn't really have much weight to begin with.

Did he meant faster on track or just on the straights? If it's just straight line pick then nothing much to shout about since the Type R is not very fast in that department. Of course you can argue that it is impressive for a 660cc car to beat a 2L Vtec engine but then again any class 2 bike can do the same. Small engine on a light chassis makes a whole world of difference. It would be more interesting if the Copen can beat the Type R on a track like Suzuka.

Its a common saying to compare stock to stock, because when you mod, the sky's the limit.

I would just enjoy the Copen for what it is - a cheap way to get into hard-top convertible motoring with a perky engine.

I think he meant if both cars move off together from a standstill, a mod copen will be able to keep pace a STi for the 1st 2 gears and not being smoked immediately. This may be possible for the light weight copen if you compare the power/weight ratio but i think STi has a better power band due to it's 2.5l engine. But this is interesting, youtube got any video to prove this?

Is not just the final gear... is the entire gear ration... is very low.. the ratio of the 5th gear.. is the same as most car's 3rd gear....

Is better to throw in a K3VET and mod from there...

Hahaha smoke is still smoke.... keep up with 1st gear and 2nd gear... and losing out... u r more than 200m behind in a 400m meter race..

Not sure what is there to brag about being fast or comparable in the 1st 2 gears.... perhaps is just brainless ego...

Actually even if you compare power to weight ratio the STI still wins unless the transmission loss is significant enough. Then again its AWD vs FWD, surely AWD got its advantages for straight line pick up.

I wasn't really referring to the final gear just to clarify. I guess your problem can be solved by changing the final drive to a lower one. It is going to affect your acceleration though.

I test drive both before I settle to buy Copen

Swift 1.5 A, ok drive, nice dash board, with cup holders.. etc But I had to floor the accelerator just to speed up a little..

And its just a short dist, maybe 15 to 60.

2010 Swift model, keyless entry, clean and nice dashboard

For Copen, just a light tap will do.. But Copen has a very basic dashboard

No clock, cup holder 1, and its ridiculously far behind, a little out of reach , when I am driving, difficult to reach for a drink

My copen does not have any alarm too, but its only $100 to fix up.
