He will kill me if i suggested this.New battery don't want,want to use old battery.But still wondering why the battery can last so long.Most lasted only 2 year the most.

my dad's camry's MF batt lasted abt 4 yrs. and he's a high mileage driver. [sweatdrop]

 

maybe his case is an outlier.. [laugh] i must say that the cranking on that car was still good. [nod] in fact, better than his current camry [sly] also on MF batt. [:/]

Yah most battery have life span of 2 yr + but maybe depends on chemical properites of the lead and sulphuric acid inside. Some place even sell addictives to extend the life don't know it works or not?

The battery symbol lighted up in my bro's Nissan Prairie when the engine is running. The car voltmeter shows 12V. Believe the alternator is going kaput soon. Can I still drive from Eunos to my AMK workshop or will the car die off since it's drawing power from the battery only? How long will the battery lasts before dying off?

Try to rev up the engine rpm and check the voltage output at the battery terminals - just to comfirm the alternator charging status.

If you have to drive to your regular mech, it is best you switch off all electrical acc inculding the air con so as to reduce wattage usage. It is very difficult to know whether the battery have the sufficient power to bring yr car to AMK.

I think all these MF batteries are a freaking waste of money!

 

Met a Malaysian guy driving a SG registered B13 Sunny. His conventional battery that needs maintenance (water top ups) is close to 3yrs old.

 

He told me it is difficult to buy these batteries in SG. Go Malaysia to buy. Pop by any of their workshop and tell the size of your battery and insist on the maintenance type. They will get it for you.

 

If can couple with desulphator, confirm 5yrs+ lifespan!

 

Either get Yokohama (made in Malaysia but more expensive) or Yuasa.

 

 

i agree. my friend's maintenance type battery can last 3 years and still crank once only. sunny too. tinking of using such battery. MF a bit gimmick. it died on me when i'm with a lady before.

See attached photo. Available in ebay spore & Yahoo auction spore. Simple voltmeter - no need to know the lower and upper limits of each test.

Juz to update, it was the alternator problem that's why the battery symbol lighted up. Went to workshop and serviced the alternator, now working well. Lucky can be repaired and no need to replace.

The convenience you pay for an MF battery is not justifiable the way I look at it. $100 for one and has to be changed yearly. Water used to top up the conventional battery is cheaper over 3yrs!

 

In view of my engine bay beening exceptionally hot. What are the chances of maintenance type battery acid leaking all over the place if properly filled(Just at max line)?

 

My MF batt just 13 months with MY made desulfator already got leak at -ve terminal which I silicon it. Notice that voltage not as stable as it used to be and battery test with with workshop tester shows 65%. Considering go MY to get maintenance type & DIY heat shield + existing desulfator after reading this thread.

 

But scare major disaster if electrolyte blow out. Many plastic stuff are turning brittle or crack in the engine bay, just too hot.

Real liquid is easier to cool compared to gel. The water boils off carrying the heat with it. That is why you don't overfill. They most likely have designed the battery well and used the fill indicators to prevent stupidity from performing it's most dastardly act. laugh.gif

 

If the plastic turns brittle, it most likely be 3-5yrs old by then. At all counts with a battery that old, it would have done it's job to the fullest already.

Conventional battery filler caps are vented, just make sure they are not clogged to allow for the gasses to escape.

 

Not sure how hot is your engine bay but mine runs exceptionally hot too. I'm on the provided stock conventional battery for over 24 months. The battery capacity is around 66% and voltage is at an ideal 12.6V. Physically, battery doesn't look bloated and no traces of battery acid near the filler caps. It just might last another 2 years but I'm tempted to change!

 

The only issues I have is the frequent need (weekly) to top up battery water... while I don't totally attribute it to the high temperature, my take it's probably due to the design of my car battery charging system - high charging voltage.

Battery water will boil and evaporate not because the engine bay is very hot - the cause is either the battery plates are heavily suphated or the alternator is generating too high a voltage ( alternator should not generate more than 14.2volt at 2,500 engine rpm).

If yr battery charging status is 65%, I doubt you can crank the engine.

Battery shield is not idea solution as the heat from the surrounding battery may be trapped within the shield and that can cause localise heating. The best is to ensure the battery is sited at location with good free flow of incoming air.

Explosion will occur especially jump starting a battery with very low charge and freezing battery electrolyte. The other cause is spark that manage to jump into a open battery cell.

battery is at 12.7v (100%), think the 65% is CCA or something using those load tester with printout.

 

My car has this characteristic of showing 14.2V on idle after cold start, idle 750rpm (14.2V seen on my HU), then it wll drop to & try to regulate at 13.6V after 5 minutes or so of driving regardless of rpm then. I know that there is a built in regulator set at 13.6V.

Sometimes spike drop for 1 or 2 seconds to 12.8V if 2nd fan cut in.

 

This type of charging characteristic can use maintain type battery? Cos this car all along use MF (1st & 2nd pce). But the maintenance discribe in manual is top up water type leh.

Ask so much cos not much experience with wet type. Thanks.
