some time the location of the mall also play a part, not necessary the rental. Funan had it heyday in the 80s, but when the Raffless City and Suntec came along, that area slowly become less attractive. Not only Funan, further down central mall, even being a newer mall is as dead, not to mentioned the Liang Court next to it.

Problem becomes issue when heyday past but rental continue to rise.

I would say the most power suburban malls are in tampines and jurong. Really almost zero need to go to town. Causeway point I haven't been there since reno. Anyway it's really ulu

Agreed. I find it a chore to walk to funan. Cos it's not close to city hall at all.

Oh. Imm refreshing? Seldom been there since I moved out of the West. Ha haven't been to most of the new malls there.

find the selection there quite alright for me ... new tenants are Onitsuka Tiger, Camper, Commune furniture and Nike opening this month.

and having Giant there is convenient too.

I believe these are mostly outlet store, probably become like JPO, by then you will see tour buses ferry loads of tourist to IMM.

yup, outlet concept.

thankfully, tour buses are still bringing tourists to Orchard Road ... not to IMM ... [:p]

still remember last time the DOS games were in 1 or 2 floppy disk... got them from Funan, eg the KOEI games or Championship manager

Then evolved into whole box of floppies as games got bigger, then curse like hell when at home found one or few of the disks got unreadable and had to make another trip back to Funan

SG rentals killing the retail scene. Of course landlords will never admit it and blame everyone/everything else.

High rentals also mean no interesting small indie boutique shops/eateries anymore, only left big chain stores e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e. How boring... Add on tax here and there, ho cham for local consumers... (esp eating out, knn service charge 10% + GST 7% = 17% tax on top of total bill where some places will charge you for tissue/peanuts/tea... kns)

Buy so many things in local stores so much more ex than other countries. No point shopping locally (esp. when service also sux or non-existent)  GSS also full of rubbish... discount all small small. All the old dinosaurs running retail have no idea what's happening or how to value add to their retail shops. And losing more and more customers, esp. the younger generation. It is like being a Singtel mio or Starhub cable TV in the era of streaming boxes or being a comfort delgro in the era of Uber. Dinosaurs afraid to let go of their own ways and trying to be in control of everything when control is now in the hands of users. They are now only slowly realising they need us more than we need them. Might be too late though. SG retail really has no idea (or put any effort into) how to bring more customers in.

And everyone is so well travelled nowadays with budget flights all around the region, so cannot bluff chewren liao. Many will just save up by not buying anything here, use the savings to take a plane up to BKK or Tokyo (or Hkg / Taiwan) and spend spend spend away there. Shopping in Tokyo now cheaper than SG, who would have thought.

It's hard to sympathise with the local retail scene.

Underneath the CCB PAP, this post is actually very good :D

With impending closure of Funan, Challenger is moving towards e-commerce. Guess u have to down online research.

This is just an excuse given by the challenger to close shop at funan IT mall. Look at how challenger expend their outlets to all over singapore. Sales figure for funan IT mall has not been that good and they close it to reduce operating cost, Challenger at funan IT mall occupy the whole top level leh, the cost of rental will be a killer.

Although online sales has been picking up for past few years, bulk of the sales still come from visiting the shop itself to purchase item. There are something that online sales cannot reproduce. That is the look and touch to get a feel of the item and then buy from the shop.

Challenger is also very clever, as they opened up many outlets at all over singapore, close the one at funan do not cost any loss to them. Infact it may even drive up profit with the reduce rental cost and overhead at funan IT mall.

the days of high end hotel shopping gallery are over.

when I was young, some of the rich kids would brag about going Hilton shopping gallery or Mandarin shopping gallery etc ... haha ...

even Raffles Hotel looks very quiet nowadays, dunno what new owners have in mind.

Suntec not been the same since Carrefour left.

Current mix of shopping and F&B not really appealing to me so no compelling reason to head down there.
