Check the current rating of your car recorder and any other stuff that was connected to the plug. If its still within the plug's rating, you have a case.

There should be a fuse at the tip of the (black/red) plug!!

I am surprised that it can burn up the wire until like that.

Really scary...lucky for you it did not create anything worst.

It appears that the wires are undersized for the current drawn. Unlikely there is a fuse within the plug that can break the overloaded circuit. Hmm... layman bought from another layman some unsuitable product?

Max amp draw for cigarette light plug is 10amp. Most of the well designed cigarette lighter plug has a fuse built -in that comes into contact with the hot wire.

From the photos is appears that the high heat starts from the multi outlet socket and travel towards the plug. There must be a short circuit in the multi outlet wiring.

If there is overloading ,the high heat cause by high amp drawn will melt the plug first.

Did you check anything wrong with your recorder?

A possible scenario is your recorder is drawing a current, probably a faulty capacitor.. The 1st extension may be using a high current fuse (not surprising if it's mad in china), thus allow high current to past.

the 2nd extension likely has the normal fuse rating, and got burnt off....

These kind of cheapo extension usually has very thin wires and for usage of total less than 1 amp.

Your car recorder sucks more than 1A and overheats the wiring. GPS will also suck more than 1A.

The worse thing is that it may be fused but they put a 5A fuse inside which wouldn't blow until the wire insulation burnt and catch fire.

Same thing will happen for those who mod their electrical at workshops without consideration for the wiring ratings, like those who go for 100W white light or extra powerful foglight. The wire insulation melt before the fuse does.

That's how many cars catch fire.

i did check on my recorder, even after the incident, i sent car for wire inspection at some audio shop.

everything was fine, fuse was inspect and replace if required..

thinking of it, i was pretty shocked too.

though i'm not a technical person, i believe such device should come with a breaker or fuse for safety in such event..

thank God i was in car.. otherwise... [:(]

The problem is that the fuse is overrated for the thin wire that they supply.

It's the undersized wiring problem.
