Good-Carbuyer 1st Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 hahaha...i am 14 years older than you but i think i react faster than you...but I guess most times I do not need to react faster than you but use my experience, appropriate driving style and anticipation instead. actually at 120kph, you wanna tailgate bumper to bumper also can, no need 2 car lengths. it all depends on the road condition ahead of the car you are tailgating and whether that fellow is also playing with you, or he got the balls to e-brake on you, then you see who react faster and brake within a shorter distance. but at that speed and tailgating, 99% you lose lah. from what you wrote so far, u need to learn when to back off. judge the traffic condition way ahead and dun assume younger means faster. You got the point. You are right. I am begining to feel more comfortable if she were to surrender her driving licence rather than attend refresher driving lessons. Safer for all road-users? ↡ Advertisement
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 ps arh. met a bugger on PIE this evening... WHOLE of lane 1 and 2 is clear (and i mean it's like 100-200m infront and behind), and he simply just stay on lane 1 at 95kmh throughout This type if ty refuse to give way, i just overtake on e left. No choice.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 Driving off faster at traffic lights and keeping safe distance are 2 different things. If people follow the 2s rule there would be alot lesser accidents which will also reduce the amount of traffic jams. Cuz during peak hours most of the accidents are usually those rear end ones where people don't keep safe distance and end up holding up the traffic even more. I was waiting fr someone to point this out.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 At 70km/h with 3-car length from front car can sometimes invite Lane 2 car (below 70km/h) to accelerate into Lane 1 (sometimes they jammed brake once inside Lane 1). Many bumper to bumper convoy/chain collission could be due to such situation if less than 3-car length is maintained Exactly. Following too close makes it dangerous fr others to filter in. Thats why i feel pple follow closely cos ty dont want others to filter in front of them. Quite selfish attitude.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 Good idea. I wonder how often our roads free from heavy traffic enough for us to practice such luxurious addiction (laugh). I really make the effort to find such road conditions daily (laugh) Whenever i travel on clear/free-flowig roads i observe e 2 seconds rule. If i stuck in heavy traffic, then no choice but to just follow slowly but always maintain a safe distance n i wil give way if i see other vehicle trying to filter in. If makes driving safer n less stressful fr everybody.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 Be very careful. That 'slow' one in Lane 1 may just filter left into Lane 2 as he was 56 metres ahead when he last saw you. At 140km/h with 14 car length = 56 metres (1-car length = 4.0 metres), I wish you good luck (you may need overhelming lots of it). I believe this is all the help I can give you When i on lane 1 i always pull up behind e slower car 1st. If after a few seconds he stay in lane 1, its clear he has no intention of giving way. Only then wil i overtake on lane 2 after checking if its clear. So far i hardly ever encounter ty move to lane 2 as i am overtaking on e left but i am always prepared just in case that idiot does it. Drivivg on SG roads fr so long, I already honed my ''overtake on e left'' skill very well cos so many idiots like to hog lane 1.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 Do not worry without ABS. You can DIY. Step hard onto the foot brake pedal. Release the foot from the foot brake pedal. Step hard onto the foot brake pedal again. Keep repeating this, and its about the same as ABS. ABS most useful when driver panicked, jammed brake and hold foot down even when car start to skid Candence braking needs to b practiced many times b4 someone can do it well under emergency situations. Most pple panic n just slam on e brakes n keep pressing as hard as possible.
Nzy Twincharged October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 well i did check my mirrors, i honestly have no idea where that car came from my guess would be that he was speeding If u had checked ur mirrors and blindspot u should have noticed him speeding and the gap closing so u would have waited till he passed before filtering, even if he was speeding very fast he could not have just popped up beside u. I guess u didnt check carefully.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 then slow reaction plus bad judgement lor. U forgot to add DAMM BAD LUCK.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 U don't understand what I am trying to say. He keep 5 car length. But he looks at 3-4 cars infront of him. Not the car directly infront of him only. Normally this method works. But for this accident he had no other cars to look at so could only rely on the brake lights of the car directly infront so didn't have time to react and brake in time. Then he sud hv pulled back further as a safety precaution. When driving on e raods, situations keep changing n we sud adapt n adjust as we go. Thats e difference between a good/experienced driver as opposed to a bad/inexperienced driver.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 Accidents are caused by 3 factors. Road conditions, vehicle malfuction or driver error. Which factor do you think caused the accident with your cousin? Extremely bad luck?

Thats e difference between a good/experienced driver as opposed to a bad/inexperienced driver. Yup. He just keep 5 car length all the time when on expressways. Cuz he feels that it looks safe. Totally forget about the 2s rule.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 when you are in an impending accident, releasing your brakes every split second will be the last thing on your mind! For someone who has not throughly learnt n practiced it, u r right. Normal panic behaviour is to step brakes as hard as possible n keep stepping as hard as possible. Thats why ABS is 1 of e best safety functions u hv in yr car.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 mercedes had this in 2004 already now its on E-class standard and S-class and option on C-class Ah ok. I stand corrected. I get confused sometimes cos i did remember reading it long ago.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 well i did check my mirrors, i honestly have no idea where that car came from my guess would be that he was speeding That car was likely speeding very fast. I hv been caught unawares by this type b4.I admit sometimes i was not concentrating 100% on e road.
Pisces69 6th Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 i usually keep a distance of 2 car lengths and on most cases i travel at around 110 - 120km/h yet till date i haven't encountered any accidents or near accidents due to braking distance/reaction time from my experience i doubt that i'll ever need 5 car lengths, perhaps i'm younger thats why i could react faster i'm 22 btw I think more likely u hv been very lucky so far. But luck comes n goes u know. Just hope when yr luck goes, u r not doing this. U can b considered as a tailgater. I hv been driving fr >30 years n i was once a young boastful driver till i had an accident n i wud b humble fr some time n then e arrogance slowly seeps in again. Till my next accident. Saviourwu 1st Gear October 26, 2010 Share October 26, 2010 10 car lengths at 100kmh is e correct distance to stop SAFELY. Safely means also allowing cars behind to stop safely. Very few drivers practise that in SG, thats why we see so many chain collisions on our eways. Many drivers over-estimate their n their cars ablities here. agree with you fully~ Few on the road adheres to safety rules after passing their tests. Especially hate those who don't give signals and anyhow cut in. Even worst are those who don't signal, cut in, find the lane too slow and cut out again, all without signal... Think they are race champions, rush like mad, but only to reach the traffic light a few minutes earlier. In singapore, speeding and rushing only save you a few minutes. But driving safely can save your life. Hope we'll all remind ourselves of this before we start our engine. Stay alive~ ↡ Advertisement
