Saviourwu 1st Gear September 18, 2011 Share September 18, 2011 hi guys, a friend i know told me whenever he change tyres there will always be some scratches. He has been to many different tyres shops. Even some widely recommended shops such as Soh Brothers, p-- ---g, etc, all have scratched his rims to some extend. Any idea if any tyre shop gives guarantee for no scratch of rims or workmanship is superb? ↡ Advertisement

Roh96 6th Gear September 18, 2011 Share September 18, 2011 Have u watch the process of how they change the tyre? The risk of scratching is very high, anything can happen. That is why I never believe in spending money on expensive rims.

Alant 1st Gear September 18, 2011 Share September 18, 2011 We take precaution while parking or stopping at road side with care not to scratch the rims, but somehow when go for tyres change or even tyres rotation, they will be scratched.
KARTer 2nd Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 (edited) Do not use tubeless tire (buy inner tubes for tire) if no choice gotta change the tire, can we tell the boss of tyre shop that his man has to do it carefully and we dont rush him..... the pneumatic 'gun' can scratch the 'recessed hole' of the rims' deep-set bolts, or his metal tool can scratch the rims during removal/installation of the tire from/onto the rim. walk to the next shop if the boss not interested in what you ask. its workmanship of the man and choice of shop of the car owner. Civic6228 6th Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 South East Tyres did a good job,no scratches so far. I second that ..... pretty happy with the service provided by South East. It will be diffcult to ensure that 100 % but as long as they bother and look after the rims, it is good enough for me. I agree that it is frustrating that we take special care and attention to ensure that the rims are not damaged but the rims are scratched when changing the tyres. Help1 1st Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 most tyres shops do not invest in a "guard" whereby it is inserted to the metal bar to minimise the scratches along the rim when dismounting the tyre from the rim. regular maintenance of the machine to ensure no debris are trapped is another preventive maintenance. The scratches in the recess of the nuts quite unavoidable as the thickness of the gun bolt is pretty standard. you can always remind to the tyreman not to scratch the rims even though they are already aware. Ghostrider 3rd Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 Depending on how much the shop values your business. Does not mean you use cheap rims gives them the right not to take precaution to damaging it. I have beening using SE Tyres for a long time and I never have a problem with them as they treat all customer's rims with care. Stamford at Lokyang also not bad....but I would still prefer SE to do rotation...change tyre for me.
SimonTan 2nd Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 (edited) If really concern about scratched rim, then perhaps apply a layer of engine oil the edge of the rim, during removal of old tyres. At least it reduces the frictional rub, engine oils suppose to protect metal to metal wear right? Actually by right should also wash the entire rim, to remove the brake dust, before doing the balancing of wheel.Oh...also remember to install the valve cap before the balancing wheel as well. Yeobh 4th Gear September 19, 2011 Share September 19, 2011 To prevent damage to the alloy rim edges, shop should use tyre change turntable jaw clamps and rim protectors when clamping the tyre and plying the beads To prevent damage to the alloy lug nuts it's best to use specially coated nylon impact socket. LOL :) ↡ Advertisement
