Anyway I made a mistake at the mileage i clocked before i had to drive in to check out the MU, it was 140K, not 144.

I will remember to make milestone post-it pads at every major repair I have to do to my car next time.

Well i rather drive a conti w/dsg car that fails at 150k than a jap car that runs all the way to 400k.

 

How a car handles and the way it drives matter a lot to me.

Drive a Camry for 400k???.....that's like someone preferring to suffer an illness for a decade juz to avoid going to see a doc once every few years...

There will always be 2 distinct camps here.

 

Camp 1

1) "DSG is unreliable, i hear so and so, so and so say one."

2) "DSG is unreliable, 10 out of 10000 cases cannot be wrong."

3) "DSG is unreliable, i have to do this and this service at this mileage, the other one don't have to do at all until....."

4) "DSG is unreliable, when I googled it specifically, so many cases turned up."

 

Camp 2

1) "I tried this and this vs the DSG, wow the DSG is just wow."

2) "I think it is reasonable that something has to give way at ------K mileage, considered not bad already."

3) "Its only 10 out of 10000 cases, how many cars on the road using DSG, how many actually made a mountain out of a molehill?"

4) "DSG is like an acquired taste, you get it, or you don't."

A MU replacement hardly registers as a heart attack lah...lol

 

But seriously, I was given a loan Camry for 3 days when I sent my car to workshop for an accident claim. I was oredi bored driving it back from the workshop. Sibei mundane and lacks driving feel. Can't imagine driving it for 400k.....

I can agree with you about the lack of driving feel and it can drive car nuts like us, err, well..nuts. 

 

But there are many who just need comfortable conveyance from point to point, and for them the Camry suits them. Horse for courses i guess.

It's like religion. No right no wrong. Each will have their own preferences. So it's more important to look at facts rather than preferences.

 

The mu tends to have a lifespan of abt 150k. Dry clutches wear out abt 100k. For those who managed to outlive the parts much more, congrats. But it's good to be aware of the possible replacement time n costs when needed. Not just gearbox but a whole lot others too.

 

Btw doesn't apply if u change car every few years

My entire in law is just like tat. I suspect judging by sales figures of camry altis, we probably the odd ones lol

Actually, there are cases of the wet DSG MUs failing also.

They are not as commonplace as the DQ200.

Because statistically, there are fewer road vehicles using the wet DSG, opposed to the number of B&B cars on the DQ200.

 

It exists, it is there, just not as many.

Lets all rejoice that there is still some variety left in the auto world when it comes to drivetrains, and there are choices that we can make.

 

Engines - IL3, IL4, IL6, V6, V8, V10, V12 engines, Gearboxes - Manual, DCT, CVT, Torque Converter Auto. All of them are distinct in character and feel. 

 

When the inevitable EV and FCV comes, thats when the car will really become a kettle. I mean, how does one electric motor feel different from another??

The DQ200 gearbox is a $15K piece part, excluding labour cost.

Doubt anyone would buy a car knowing they have to replace a piece part that is 3/4 their OMW, with a ticking timer.

When you bought your DSG, the moment just before you signed for the purchase, did you ask your SE, MU replacement = free?

I never in my life heard any complaint abt the SST (dual clutch gb) failure in the EvoX. So not all dual clutch gb are defective.
