Happily1986 5th Gear October 9, 2012 Share October 9, 2012 5 hrs screen on with 30% left? How did you manage that? On wifi I suppose? No way you can get that on our lousy 3.5G! The next project roadrunner is going to be crucial! Having said that, the next Nexus will be from LG, will you bite? can lah. doing CWM backup while lying on the bed then fell asleep while the screen remains switched on. happened to me before. The next project roadrunner is going to be crucial! Having said that, the next Nexus will be from LG, will you bite? It was a battery consumption test (and predictor) based on my settings. You can't use your phone while it runs, so i went to bed. It doesn't consume data except for the web browsing test. Otherwise all data was through background sync. Btw AMOLED screens have a big advantage with mostly black UIs/content Anyway no LG for me. It's one thing for a device to feel cheap on the outside, it's another for it to actually be cheap on the inside. I'm hoping the rumours of multiple devices are true so I can jump to either a Sony, Moto or HTC device. Roadrunner is still a rumour, besides we won't need one if there's a Razer Maxx HD based Nexus :P Edited October 9, 2012 by Elfenstar

It's based on Optimus G so running Quad core Krait with Adreno 320. Should spot the same 2GB Ram too and the same 768 x 1280 IPS. Going to be a beast inside but I am not very confident of LG design and built quality though

Sp4wn Turbocharged October 9, 2012 Share October 9, 2012 wow u still have the legendary N1. My wife's N1 given to my sis in law, still up and running too and reasonably snappy with cm9 onboard the power button is no longer working though yup .. i bought it as soon as it came out. was pretty satisfied, but with each OS update, it seemed to slow down. battery life was horrible ... even more so was the HTC service. they have the worst customer service in the history of mankind. when my n1's screen stopped working 3 months in .. i called them and they had their service guy pick it up. i was promised a repair in 3 days ... 2 weeks later, they sent me my phone badly scratched and not fixed .. i was literally yelling at the person on the phone ... and all he told me was that "it happens". i was like WTF? i gave them a pristine phone, and not only did they not fix the screen, they damaged it. finally after a month of escalation .. they agree to exchange 1-for-1. the day before the guy came with the phone, i got a call saying they changed their mind. so i basically had a useless phone (digitizer would go completely bonkers at times). i promised myself i would never, ever buy another HTC product. interestingly enough .. i met someone from the family that owns/runs HTC about 3-4 months ago. "they" had a really nice iphone 4s. (i wont reveal whether its a guy or girl, but cher wang was "their" aunt :P)
Elfenstar 3rd Gear October 9, 2012 Share October 9, 2012 The new nexus would beat S3 from inside. My only problem is the outside Razr Maxx HD based Nexus sounds like a marathon runner but then I am not a fan of Razr's shape By the time I change phone should have ip5S too Apple does not need an ip5s, and for most even a S3 equivalent dual core is more than sufficient (unless you do graphically intensive tasks). Think about it this way. Geekbench uses a 1.6ghz powermac G5 as a comparison, and most of our phones are already 50% faster What apple needs is a revamped iOS. some basic things like getting rid of the paper, wood, etc UI elements and make it more in-line with their hardware style (that in itself will make it feel a lot less dated). Then some simple changes like making the notification bar persistent when there are new notifications, or now that there is more space improve what you can do when you double-click the home button e.g. something like android's power control widget rather than the rudimentary crap they have currently etc. Then there's the polished aspect of things. I can't believe people say Android is less polished when I can find more inconsistencies in iOS vs Jelly Bean. Standardising the background textures would be a good start. Take the player control buttons for example. You have one texture when you're in the player, another in the lockscreen, a third when you use the double clicking of the home button version. They can't help other developers UI's or feel, but at least standardise their own lah. Compare the buttons at the bottom of the dialer to those at the bottom of the app store, different. Compare the feel of say contacts and calender to the app store, mail, and settings, then again to photos and again you have three different ones. They really need to take a page out of Googles handbook on this last bit It may sound like a lot, but essentially its simply improving consistency across the UI, hardware, and their own apps, as well as improving existing functionality. i.e. apply the same exacting standards they use for their hardware to their software. Nothing really new, but as those of us who have moved from android 2.x to ICS then JB know, the design, fluidity, and consistency makes a huge difference. Felipe 3rd Gear October 9, 2012 Share October 9, 2012 i guess it's the user experience Apple has. i did give Android a try but for the really basic stuff like typing, the IP keyboard is more responsive and accurate. Apple does it in a less is more way. Android does it in a more is more way. I'm now onto WP7.5. It has a simple approach too but the IP touch response is still better. Camera also no lag and images are really sharp on the Retina. i'm not into Amoled screens as i find the colors oversaturated, from Nokia to Samsung. I'm keen to give Android another go but with HTC. The One X is going to get the JB update soon and the new Desire X looks promising and affordable. But then, HTC is launching Win8 soon. And having downloaded the free Win8 on my mac os, it looks really good. so many choices...

Lucky, you mentioned "high powered environment" else I would immediately assumed you worked in the fish market. Actually, I think it is perfectly all right to compare people by their car. It does say quite a lot about the person actually, probably more so than the phone. I believe the choices people make, like their car, phone, etc, tells you things about them. For me, iphone is something of an "old gen" product for the older generation. Aunties is probably too limiting. Does it makes you feel better if I included "uncles"? I think for the young generation like teenagers, Android is dominant. PS: please don't take my comments too seriously...

And having downloaded the free Win8 on my mac os, it looks really good. so many choices... I think its the OEM skins/overlays that's haunting Android rather than Apple doing it in a less is more way while Android in a more is more way because depending on what you're doing it can go either way for both. They both have grown tremendously. Lets forget custom roms, manufacturer skins, and jailbreaking and have a look at both from how their manufacturers designed them first. Simplicity (use) One one hand iOS may be simpler because it omits choice, on the other Android may be simpler because to do a given task, chances are it takes less steps on Android. In some cases like using the app switcher, Android destroys iOS (press something then swipe away vs double press, long press, press x's), in others like sharing data which may be simpler to me via the share button, may not be as simple as leaving an app and accessing the data from another app to another person. Which way it goes really depends on the end user and their experience level with technology. Simplicity (look) Other than unpolished quirks that both have, the OS UI's are more or less consistent and simple for both. One may be more futuristic, the other more conventional, but both are simple. Homescreen wise again would run into personal preference. Is having only what you need on the home screen simpler with everything else hidden away in the app drawer, or is having everything just there on your home screen simpler? Consistency There are UI, core apps, and Google/Apple services apps for both. On this I have to give Android a thumbs up. From what it was before to what it is now. The simplified UI for the core apps are the same, and the simplified UI for the services apps are the same now. Unfortunately as mentioned in my last post, its not the same for iOS. In fact bar functionality changes, apple hasn't really done much to give you the same consistency across the board as Google has. In the end its whether your prefer Android's Holo UI and black/grey and white theme combo, or whether you prefer Apple's glossy black, nature, textured linen, and minimalistic white-blue combo. However that's just for looks. There's also usability. As mentioned earlier in my settings example. In Android, core settings are through the settings button, app settings are through the settings button in an app. In iOS core settings are through the settings button, but app settings are somethings through the app, sometimes through the settings button, and sometimes appear via the settings button but requests for you to access it through the app. Just looking at these points, you'll realise that Android does follow a lot of the less is more train of thought. It's only when you throw in functionality (NFC, panorama-till now :P, true multi-tasking, etc) that Android goes with the more is more train of thought. The problem with Android comes about because of its open nature. Manufacturers are allowed to make changes so it varies from one device to another which makes it seem like a more is more method of doing things all the time (not to mention fragmentation etc), and nobody bar the geeks would know what Android is really like much less pay for an unlocked Nexus device. Hopefully the rumours are true and there will be multiple nexus phones launched this year which hopefully will give people a more accurate idea of Android and how it isn't as complicated as they think it is P.S. Fragmentation is really a usability issue for android because apps scale beautifully if developers use the fragment API. It may become an issue on Apple in the short run because they don't have a similar API yet (black bars on the iphone 5 and black ring on iphone apps on the ipad much :P) Edited October 9, 2012 by Elfenstar

Felipe 3rd Gear October 9, 2012 Share October 9, 2012 I guess for most lay users, it's all about using something as simply as they possibly can. Agree on some of the processes u mentioned like in app settings. but perhaps, more often than not, folks just use the app rather than tweak settings. anyway from personal observation, a lot of ppl i know are still using IOS. Tablets are def ipad. i do see some switching to Android, mainly S3 or Note. I think it says a lot about the general consumer. Folks mainly just take pics, surf, compose msgs, phone calls, save notes. And whoever can make these experiences as sweet as possible wins the day. don't see u commenting about wp8. it's def worth checking out as it'll be more closely matched with win8, which im sure u'll have to use someday anyway. ↡ Advertisement
