Just a matter of time. Carrefour pulled out of Thailand last year I think. Their premises taken over by Big C.

Malaysia next one?

Turbocharged

from what i understand, they are consolidating operations. their annual revenue is >100billion euros. i also think SG barely contributes to their bottom line ... thats why I believe they are moving ... (iirc, sales in SG is XX million ...)

Turbocharged

looks like there will be no more carrefour in this timezone

Carrefour's difficulties in its home market run deeper than its global peers and paying for a turnaround will be an additional challenge.

Since Mr. Plassat took up the reins of the company at the end of May, he has started to refocus on core markets, notably in Europe, Brazil and China. In June, the company shed unprofitable Greek operations, and the possibility of exiting other markets is under review.

Businesses in Turkey, Indonesia, Poland, Malaysia or Singapore are the most likely candidates for sale, according to several market observers.

Have. core market for FT. [laugh]

I seldom buy from Karfoo but i always enjoy going in see see look look. They used to sell cheap DVDs in Suntec. It's quite sad, maybe i need to go buy a cheapo foldable bike there before it close shop.

it had been years since I last visited one of their outlet........French man cannot fight with Malaysia GIANT and Singapura NTUC lah....died co*k standing lor....

While NTUC is a Singapore company, GIANT is not a Malaysian company. It is actually owned by Diary Farm International Holding, a HK based company and Jardine Matheson Holding has a 78% share in it.

Really meh. At least fruits of same grade I think not any fresher than other places what, but charge more.

To me, turnover plays a part on whether something is fresh, so mass market places have advantage in that sense. Of course more pple also mean the fruits get molested more.

most fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood are fresher at CS..brands and products which are mostly unavailable at other hypermarts..of course its more expensive eg. a piece of Norwegian salmon can cost $12-14 at CS while it cost ~$7-8 at NTUC but the quality is astounding

Neutral Newbie

That's sad. I remember in my childhood I have always patronized Carrefour at suntec weekly, accompanying my parents for grocery shopping. More of a childhood memory to me than anything haha

depends on what you buy really. The standard FP outlet is subpar compared to a standard CS outlet. You can simply glance at the quality of the perishables and you can tell. It is very telling that NTUC Finest is only on par with the standard CS outlet. Don't believe, go take a walk. :D

Anyway, CS is pitched at the expat segment.

yup the shopping experience is definitely different from ntuc :D

for some special item you can't get from ntuc or you want shorter queue, can go cold storage [laugh]

Cold Storage price also not competitive what, yet survive.

Actually sometimes I see Cold Storage prices, don't understand why so many people still buy when they can get cheaper elsewhere. Maybe I'm missing something.

If you compare the apple in Cold Storage vs apple in Giant, you will realize, Cold Storage apple is bigger and better.

But for those milk powder, diapers etc, same lah.

Cold storage or market place... their display will make the same product look more attractive and you won't mind paying a little premium.

My childhood time dont have carrefour yet. But follow mama go tekka market or chinatown market buy fresh chicken and fish where they kill it on the spot for u. I remember hearing the chicken screaming and thrown into a big rotating metal bin to de-feather and using a large wooden stick to hammer the fish on the head.

Now no more liao.
