SINGAPORE: Five former salesmen at the now-defunct mobile phone retailer Gadget Terminal at Sim Lim Square were charged in court for cheating on Thursday (Oct 22). Chung Choong Cheik, 34, Justin Chew Chee Kin, 36, Lin Fa Cai, 32, Tan Wei Ping, 40, and Lim Wei Sheng, 30, were charged with between one and eight counts of cheating. Chung was charged with seven counts of abetment to cheat and one count of cheating, and his bail was set at S$20,000. Lin was charged with three counts of abetment to cheat, Chew was charged with two, and both Lim and Tan were charged with one count of abetment to cheat. One of Chung's charges stated that he conspired with Chew to deceive a customer into believing that a Xiaomi Mi 4 mobile phone would be sold at price of S$380. Chew then "dishonestly induced" the customer to hand over S$1,000. The five men allegedly committed the cheating offences over a period of 13 months from October 2013 to November 2014 while employed as salesmen at Gadget Terminal. The business practices of salesmen at mobile phone shops at popular electronics mall Sim Lim Square has been in the spotlight recently, following the conviction and sentencing of four Mobile Air salesmen to between four and 14 months' jail for cheating unsuspecting customers. Jover Chew, the former owner of Mobile Air, has not yet been sentenced, and was granted bail at S$40,000. Gadget Terminal was raided on Dec 4 last year and the five salesmen were arrested. The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said at the time that Gadget Terminal had topped the list of blacklisted Sim Lim Square shops, with 14 complaints lodged against them from September to November last year. The men were offered bail of between S$10,000 and S$50,000. Lin, Lim, and Chew are expected to plead guilty on Nov 12. Tan's case will be mentioned again on Nov 12 as investigations against him are still ongoing, and more charges may be filed against him. Jover Chew Chiew Loon, 33, the "brains and architect" behind Mobile Air, pleaded guilty to 12 of 28 charges against him - including abetment by conspiracy to cheat and criminal intimidation. DPP Lim, who is seeking a sentence of around 36 months, said: "There is strong public interest in deterring errant retail practices.'' Chew's lawyer Mathew Kurian said his client, who is taking anti-depressants, "deeply regrets'' his offences. Saying that Chew is a "pauper'', counsel said his client has lost everything in life and is looking forward to start life anew after serving his sentence, which will be passed on Nov 30. On Nov 16, Chew, 33, pleaded guilty to 12 charges of cheating which took place between January and October 2014. Another 16 charges were taken into consideration for sentencing. Ten out of the 12 proceeded charges were for cheating offences, while the remaining two were for criminal intimidation and intentional distress. In November 2014, a video of a Vietnamese tourist begging Chew for a refund went viral. Mr Pham Van Thoai - a factory worker who made about S$200 monthly - paid S$950 for an iPhone 6 at Mobile Air, but was told he could only get the phone if he paid an additional warranty fee of S$1,500. Chew and his employees also made another customer pick up S$1,010 in coins off his shop floor. The amount was what the Small Claims Tribunal had ordered Mobile Air to refund the customer after the shop overcharged on the price of an iPhone 6 Plus. Four of Chew’s former employees have been handed jail terms of between four and 14 months. In a hearing earlier this month, Chew’s lawyer told the court that his client was undergoing treatment for depression. Chew’s wife had also initiated divorce proceedings, his lawyer added.
