inlinesix Hypersonic August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 Very honestly - I am all into saving money, my car come from PI. But for that sort of car, and that sort of service I wouldn't use until, at the very least, car is out of warranty - the cost benefit is simply not there. Not to mention - you can afford such a car in the first place, then the servicing costs are not supposed to be such a worry to you (kinda like buying a Lamborghini then complaining about the fuel efficiency) If i can afford to buy ///M3 or ///M4 & i could save $50k via self import, why not? Putting in a bank i still can earn 1.5k. There are capable workshop out there which can provide as good service as AD. ↡ Advertisement
The_Bear Turbocharged August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 I know for Bull - you PI the car the dealer will shun you, won't invite you to drives or other things he organise. He ever say before. I know for the Bavarian, you can pay to have the car adopted by the dealer Not necessary. Like I say, unless we are going way up the scale, 95% of the car we drives would not have any major issue that is dis-similar to getting from AD. As for the "Lifestyle" perks, it is good to see that car dealers are expanding their scope to include positive ownership experience but then again, these comes with cost and not everyone takes part. There are capable workshop out there which can provide as good service as AD. For M cars - I think can PI and then pay to have the car "adopted" - so not as much of an issue. BMW maintains very comprehensive service records - so even if (for example) you have your car three years in Singapore, then take it with you when run road to Canada - BMW will still know the full history when you have you car serviced at authorised workshop in Canada. In general - the further up the "premium" ladder you move, the less willing I would be to use PI / Grey importer. While the savings might be there - and they might be a greater proportion of the cost (i.e - $50k would be about 10% savings on an M car) so the risk is also greater - if something happens and the PI can provide the support, what sort of a recourse do you have? It's not hard to imagine a situation of a product recall that MUST be done, but the PI cannot support / run road / denies responsibility, then the car becomes a lump of scrap metal. Not to mention, a good proportion of the ownership of such cars is access into the greater community of ownership - something that will be missing if you use a PI
Rantwb 2nd Gear August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 I cannot speak for others but for myself it is good to have a car, sending 1st kid to school, drops off 2nd kids at mum place and travelling half an island to work. then at night have dinner with my parents, chit chat with them and fetch all my kids back back without having to leave my parents place too early so schooling kid can sleep early. repaat this for 5 days a week. Weekend travel another half an island to in law place for them to see my kids. Full untilised. I would say difficult without a car and i say difficult never say impossible/ HDB's old carpark policy used to be family oriented. Sunday and public holidays free parking. Encourage family get together. With the new housing developments, many new car parks, no more free parking. Every minute must pay. Stupid policy for the worse.........
Ryu 5th Gear August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 The only reason a few ppl can do it because of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Everything has to be paid in cash upfront. Spare parts got issue meh?? I used to drive E39 520 when it has EOL. No issue getting parts. They are workshop specialise in Merc, BMW & Porky. Maybe i will be difficult for horse or bull. There are also workshops with the know-how for horses, bulls and other exotics. They indent the required parts too. May not have every part readily available and require lead time, from my limited knowledge this is also the case for the ADs. For regular and simple servicing, these workshops are more than competent at it.

Cannot praise... Depends on what is important to you... if you just want the car, then makes sense. If want access into the greater community - then pays your money
Amazon777 3rd Gear August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 (edited) You can always self-import. When there is a need, the mechanics will be there. Can you share your trusted partner in UK or Germany if any? Over the past decade, I tried to go towards this path but hit hurdles and I do not want go the PI $ path. I was even in Stuggart last year, the dealers says they only sell LHD porsche/merc. Ask me to liase with SG dealers, obviously they didn't know the markup is so much higher Edited August 8, 2014 by Amazon777

Again I agree - my car has never seen the inside of the AD workshop, it has always used outside workshops and compatible parts. My issue is, as cars get more exclusive and lower volume and more complex, the chances of things outside of regular servicing goes up - the chances of issues, training and service updates that are provided as a matter of course to dealers but outside workshops must learn about also increases. There is sure to be money to be saved - at the moment, I don't see the cost / benefit being in favour - but if someone else does, more power to them. Spyder79 3rd Gear August 8, 2014 Share August 8, 2014 Like the number of COE awarded will be ZERO. Lets say got 1000 COE... 999 People bid $1 3 People bid $2 LTA will award 999 COE at $1, carry over 1 to next round as the $2 bids would mean "over subscribed" - can go under, but cannot go over Not possible anymore. LTA had tuned the COE sys that $1 COE will never happen again. If i can afford to buy ///M3 or ///M4 & i could save $50k via self import, why not? Putting in a bank i still can earn 1.5k. There are capable workshop out there which can provide as good service as AD. Can share how u self import ? understand that self import is under ur name. AD have to honor the warranty. under ur name u don't need to pay for the "adaption" fee. if PI. it is using a company name to import in . AD will not hack care unless u pay the fee ↡ Advertisement
