Singapore Reckless Drivers Thread part III

I guess Porsche's way is the best. You pay for everything above car with bare engine, basic steering, basic paint. Whatever you want to add, comes with minimum 4 digit $ sign. I did not even want a paint that was costing 5k extra for both Porsches.

What you get at the end of this process is a driver's car!

In my Merc, there are 3 systems (that I know of!):

1) the red triangle that comes on when the car thinks I'm following traffic too closely. Of course, if I drive in such a way that the red triangle never comes on, people would be flashing me furiously from behind and others would be cutting me off, making things even more dangerous. Welcome to Singapore!

2) the "beep beep" that comes when the car things I'm closing too fast to traffic in front of me. OK, this one is less ridiculous than the first, but it's still irritating. It comes on even when I'm turning with other traffic abreast of me, but because of the way the car is momentarily angled (the yaw), it thinks I'm too close and beeps away. Sometimes it beeps for no ostensible reason. Maybe got ghost on the road. LOL.

3) finally, the auto braking assist or whatever it's called. The first and only time I triggered this thing was when I was in my home stretch. A car was turning off into a condo complex in front of me. As such, I didn't brake as much as I normally would (I judged correctly that I would be able to clear him as he turned - and I also had room to escape on the left in case of an emergency). But the feature still kicked in because the car wasn't aware the vehicle had already begun turning off, decided I was too close and started braking for me. As I had never experienced it before, it was a startling experience. I didn't like it. It was unnecessary and jarring.

Basically, I think these features are programmed into all modern Mercs, but don't take into account individual car tolerances or performance specifications (including braking distance). Also, by the time these features kick in, they're largely useless as the "risk" has already passed.

And I can turn at least some of them off, but back they come again the moment the car is turned off and on. Keeping them off by default would require a warranty-voiding ECU recode, I think.

Just a quick share.. despite not a reckless.. but do remember do not carry flammables in your cars, such as butane torches, stoves with gas canisters, lighter fluids etc. even paints too.

This taxi is a TransCab Wish MPV Model, with CNG canister behind?

What exploded was the CNG canister?, after a traffic accident (according to the CNA article below). Can see from the article pic, the whole back side (last 2 passenger seats area) completely obliterated by the CNG canister? cooking off... and the metal can see peel backwards & upwards..

The video from the link below shows the firefighter seemingly unaware there is a CNG canister? behind and he went forward to fight the fire as if it was diesel fuel fire... then lucky for him as he took 2 steps back, the CNG canister exploded and can see he was engulfed in the fire storm.. reminds me of The Hurt Locker scene when the IED went off... but this firefighter did not have the EOD suit on.. hope he is OK... Also, I dun see the police cordon off the whole section of the road, so they might also not be aware of the danger of the CNG canister sitting behind in the burning taxi... so in this whole incident, the ignorance of the respondents to the potential threat posed by the burning taxi, could have put many of the bystanders , the SBS bus right behind the burning taxi as well as passing cars, in danger of being injured by flying shrapnel about to come from the exploding gas tank....

As usual in our MSM, the words seem to play down the incident and no mention of the CNG canister cook off in the taxi nor how serious the firefighter was injured... onlyFour men, including an SCDF firefighter, sustained minor injuries and were taken to National University Hospital, SCDF said." . Well, after you see the video in this article, can you seriously believe he sustained minor injury?? Maybe my perceived injury threshold is too low, and to me this seems like serious injury to the firefighter with the flying shrapnel and intense heat of the explosion.... But then again, what do we expect from the MSM? Truths? Real investigative reporting?? Or maybe the article writer has seen much worse injury levels , to label this as minor injury.. anyway, the MSM is never known for whole truthful reporting ... maybe under carpet sweeping is more their forte....

I cannot recall the dangers of the CNG powered vehicles being discussed or addressed when it was allowed to be retro fitted to vehicles many years back, and this incident certainly will drive home the danger of having a gas tank under your butt..and like in this incident, the accident caused by being rear-ended by another car can certainly cause more than a disfigured bumper...

Hope the CNG cars can be scrapped or disallowed to be on the roads , for all drivers and pedestrian safety..

Great observation but aint the CNG sticker stuck at the back of the taxi meant to convey something? Or sticker already melted under the intense heat such that no one managed to take notice?

Thanks bro.. me thinks the CNG sticker in the back already gone in the fire and even if the front bumper has one, dunno if it melted in the heat or if the respondents saw it or were too focused to put out the fire first than to think for a sec if there is a gas tank inside... sometimes under the heat of the moment(literally), we can't think too clearly or detailed but to address the most immediate & pressing issue on hand first...

Anyway, kudos to the firemen and police for their actions.. [bounce1]

No time for a long reply (watching F1) but I made a post here before, where I mentioned a remark made in private to me by an AMDK safety officer of a Fortune 500 MNC where he said that he considered Singapore safety culture all wayang (he didn't use that exact word, obviously). Edited by Turboflat4

Gotta agree with you on that bro...

From what we can see in this real-life incident, their SOP n training seems to be more for theory proving than to be prepared for the actual event..  same for the little india riots...

Hope hindsight n the event here will provide valuable lessons to the office planners... nothing beats experience....

Once again the armchair experts are out in force - a video from another angle showed that the firefighter who was caught in the fireball walked away relatively unscathed. He was wearing all of his PPE which undoubtedly protected him from becoming a second Dwight Soriano in a week.

You should remember that unlike the armed forces, the SCDF are operational every day. What wayang are you talking about? Just because some expatriate waltzes in here and says our safety culture is all a show, its somehow valid?

No matter where that expat hails from, its not hard to pull out some workplace health and safety violation that occurred in his own country. If he wants to talk down to us and our culture here, he should take heed that he's not back home anymore.

To be honest, in the neighbouring countries - there is NO safety culture at all.

Singapore is generally better in this aspect, for example uniformed forces take safety (TSR) to a bit of overkill nowadays. Construction industry probably can improve their safety awareness.

Want to talk about wayang, army is the most wayang...

I read that the firefighter caught in the blast has been discharged from hospital, perhaps some bruises or cuts if shrapnel from the blast hit him. I don't think he got burnt or seriously injured as he was in full gear.

Kudos to the bravery of our SCDF officers, deep respect for them, hope the officer injured have a speedy recovery. They risk their life and limp to safe-guard our life and properties in their every-day's works! [nod]

I always assumed they were worried a female voice would drawl "baaaabbbbyy..." on the speaker and the wife is seated next to the driver.

Not necessary wife. Imagine colleagues/friend/old folk. Babbyyyy you will surely go dig you hole and hid your face
