VES 2018

VES rebate is good for buyers even if the amount is offset against the PARF.

For example, the Honda Jazz 1.3 with OMV at say $15,500 and VES rebate at 10K. Selling price for Jazz is say $75K.

AD's cost to bring in the car is about 35K including custom duty and GST.

Including the VES tax rebate of 10K and COE at say 30K, AD's actual cost is 35K + 30K - 10K = 55K; hence AD makes 20K profit.

If the Jazz is at VES 0, AD may price the Jazz at 85K to maintain their profit of 20K.

So, you save 10K with VES rebate but your scrap value will be reduce from $7,750 (50% of OMV) to $2,750 (50% of 15500-10K) which is exactly 5k less. So effectively, with VES rebate for the Jazz, you save 5K even if you keep the Jazz up to 10 years.

AD includes the rebate in the final sale price. If there is no VES rebate, you are likely to pay 10K more upfront even though your actual saving for the Jazz is only 5K.

Too bad not alot cars have the rebate... :(

can someone advise whether VES scheme is applicable for COE renew car? thanks

Nope. Only new cars.

Same for the 130bhp capped COE only for cars since announces. Those old small cc turbo still enjoy cat A COE if renew.

But rules can change...so do whatever you intend to do before they change it..

The complete list of VES rebates, surcharges of our cars as at beginning July 2018.

Not sure if this has been uploaded before. As it’s useful, posting here for all to refer to.

Fact: High performance, high CC cars tends to be driven much less than the B&B cars.

Fact: if the live span mileage of the high VES penalty cars are multiplied by the emission ratings, the total pollutive products spewed into the atmosphere will be less than the B&B cars.

So, how do you commensurate that?

If the government is all about being green, just tax running cost (Road tax/fuel) and leave the buying taxes alone. Obviously they are just interested in $ from ALL avenues. Period.

With the more stringent VES and 0% vehicular population growth rate, our air quality should improve.

However, the highest surcharge for more pollutive high-cc cars has been reduced from $30k to $20k.  I find this puzzling as it will make it cheaper to buy such pollutive cars.

Therefore, this VES still requires fine-tuning and should stay away from adopting a symmetrical approach as it (a) penalises the Cat A cars more than Cat B cars relatively, and (b) rewards very pollutive cars compared to the previous CEVS.

Yes. If really care about the environment, first thing to do is to ban all those polluting trucks and 2 stroke bikes from Boleh land.

VES and other emission taxes are just excuses to collect more money.

I believe thats the plan. Just that with the new govt, it may be a tad sensitive. Already targetting those smoky truck from boleh land has cause much anxiety and can cause incidental increase in food produce being truck to SG.

Imagine if you initiate this scheme. Not only would there be a huge backlash. It becomes even more complain of inflationary concern.

If all these are banned, be prepared to pay more for business cost.

Tax all avenues.

Car related taxes are like sin taxes.
