good news, I'm quite interested to know how to get the temporary driving license,

what document, does it need test, medical checkup, what is the license duration, price etc

 

I have never applied before.  It is valid for 3 months only.  I think only need your passport & driving license.

Why would you want to drive there?

 

Taxi is cheap and in abundance. And it is stressful to drive in Beijing. Jams are one thing. Road etiquettes of pedestrians and other drivers are another.

 

Skip taxi la.  Use Didi chuan che.  On a lucky day, might get A6 or Buick GL8.

 

It is stressful to us as we are not used to the traffic.

have you got China driving license or not? China doesn't recognized IDP and Singapore license,

Foreigner without resident pass (something like Singapore EP) don't allow to test and get China license, in term of foreigner almost no chance to drive in China, even rental car also need to include driver, sibei jialah,

 

In the city there's no real need to drive la. Traffic is pretty bad, and there are lots of crazy cyclists and e-bikers around who don't give two shits about traffic lights. It can get pretty scary.

 

For now I should be ok with not driving in China.

In Shanghai I usually just use the metro (which is like our MRT), or call a Didi. A lot of drivers use the Roewe 550 which is like a cheap ripoff Rover but with hybrid/electric versions. But I've also gotten Buicks and even BMW 5 Series before.

now china people are really rich, BMW5 series already become B&B car, less than SGD 10k can get a 5 years BMW5 series in 2nd hand car market

Shanghai is more civilised than Beijing la.

I have been to Beijing. The vibe is indeed different. Shanghai really feels developed and metropolitan. Actually a lot of it is like Singapore.

 

CapitalLand has quite a presence in Shanghai. There's even a Raffles City Shopping Centre. No kidding. Just step inside and it's almost the same as being in Singapore.  [laugh]

In Beijing, I rode bicycle. So, I know how to deal with China traffic.

 

I use didi 專車 rather than 快車。it is inexpensive as compared to Uber Black.

@davidtch Just a question: when you were working in China, did you send money back to Singapore?

 

I've read up online and it looks like they have tightened the rules on sending money overseas.

Previously I carry RMB 30k cash whenever I go home. I only sent out juz before I leave for good.

 

If you want to sent SGD back, do it once a year. Too mafan to do it more regularly.

 

You need the following doc:

1. 結稅單from tax authority. Ask your finance colleagues for nearest 地稅局

2. Labor contract勞動合同

3. Breakdown of monthly salary

4. Passport

 

Double check with bank. Rules might change.

 

If bank tell you can only change USD 500/day, tell them you are 外籍人士。You want to remit 1 lump sum home.

 

Bank will convert RMB to SGD. From CMB PEK to OCBC SG takes me 3 days (not working day).

 

Nowadays there RMB100k/annum restrictions on overseas withdrawal

Can take under 20k rmb per time so if family come and visit can tompang out.

 

Surely the company can work out some payment methods which are less troublesome n tax friendly?

My company allows me to 'partition' some of my salary and send some it to my Singapore bank account. That's probably the best arrangement.

 

But for ad hoc money transfer looks like I may have to carry some cash whenever I fly back to Singapore.
