Lets just use a simple example,

we have seen some folks drive to certain community centers to pick up free textbooks for their children.

how about that?  😀😃 heh heh

Exactly the example I posted earlier. Free text book, uniform, shoes, etc. are for the ready needy, not those abled person with no or low income because they choose NOT to work (hard).

As an individual, his action does not seems inappropriate to many, especially when he mentioned about saving and reducing watse. I am perfectly fine with thing like eating ugly food, not buying new item if he can get used working item from someone else, etc.

Getting free canned food from restaurants which have folded is to me, 落井下石 (adding insult to the injury). I would have paid for the canned food, probably at a discount but definitely not FOC. Imo, that is taking advantage of others in trouble.

this is the "needy by choice". some have mentioned they dun steal dun rob, but to me they are doing that to the "needy not by choice".

But to this chap, he is probably showing off his "lifehack"

For me I would rather he goes recover and consumes the canned food than for the canned food to end up in the incinerator and then landfill.  If the folded restaurants could sell their items they would have done so.

PS - I don't support begging for free stuff that are still useful/valuable to the owners.

Where in the article got say freegan go and take free text books? I doubt any freegan owns a car. More likely those driving their merc to the donation centre with their maids are your 'hard working' high income earner. Don't get confused with a cheapo high income earner.

Reading through the article again after seeing the replies in this thread, I have now more questions than answers.

1. What if he cannot finish those ugly edible products from shopkeeper, canned food and condiments, gathered from cafes and restaurants that have shut down? Did he redistribute some to others? He will be wasting the food if he hog them till pass expiry date.

2. What is he going to do with the hundreds of boxes of brand new earphone he has collected? Common sense tells me he would sell them away, but what about the cash he received? Is he paying that back to the shop owner which pass him the earphone, or use to fund his 5 - 6 overseas trips annually?

3. Quoting the last paragraph "When so many things we need can be acquired for free, there is little else we absolutely need to spend money on – meaning that the cost of living in Singapore doesn’t have to be sky high." What if everyone become a freegan, who is going to work and support the economy? All the" free" things has to be paid for with money in the first place.

@Carbon82 I like your assumption about the author getting free textbook and supplies for his kids, if any. This is a valid question if he will be fighting with the real needy for limited resources. And can I safely assume he will be hitching rides from his friends whenever he is going out in the name of saving the earth? I personally dislike this type of free-loader.

Freegan - we should have a definition

Free-loader - another definition

If anyone of them falls into or out of their definition. They deserve to be called accordingly.

Anyway, if you are a freegan, I would also not want to call you a hero

Just to add my 2-cent without truly driving deep enough to understand on the subject. To me, collecting items that are edible or reusable for own use is a good trifty way/lifestyle but if you deprived those needy while you can jolly well afford them, then it may not be right.

Live simple, minimize wastage, and give away rather than throw. They give away the excess.  Don't confuse freegan with people who are gian png, coz these includes people from all walks of life.
