  5. The Volkswagen Polo has been named the 2010 World Car of the Year at the New York International Auto Show. VW's car beat out two other finalists, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Toyota Prius, to win the award. 30 vehicles had originally been nominated for the prize, a list that was whittled down until the three finalists were announced last month. To be considered for the award, a vehicle had to be in production and sold on at least two different continents in 2009. At least 500 units of each nominated vehicle had to be produced in 2009 to qualify. “Holding its own in the most competitive market segment, the all-new Polo MkV is one of VW’s star performers," a representitive of the jury said in a press release. "Draped in head-turning stylish curves, the Polo is certainly one of the classiest small VWs ever built. It’s also safe; generating a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating. Behind the wheel, the Polo demonstrates mature manners and boasts a superb driving position that’s adjustable and, in common with the latest Golf, all the controls are well weighted and precise." "The Polo is just one brilliant supermini.” The award is voted on by a jury of 59 automotive experts from around the world, though only one juror was from Africa or South America. Collectively, they narrowed the field from 30 to ten in January, before choosing the finalists a month later. Previous award winners include the VW Golf, Mazda2/Demio, Lexus LS460, BMW 3-Series, and Audi A6. Separately, the jury awarded the Chevrolet Camaro with the World Car Design of the Year prize, and the entire Volkswagen BlueMotion lineup as World Green Car of the Year. The jury did not disclose why they picked the BlueMotion Golf, Passat, and Polo collectively, instead of choosing a single vehicle.

  8. After the dust has settled down, I'm sure some of you might be curious as to how we've arrived at the results of sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year 2010. You can check out all the glitz and glamour here, but for the benefit of some people, let's revisit them once again. The Criteria We've used a total of eight criteria to determine our Cars Of The Year, and the first seven are as follows: - Views on model on sgCarMart.com - Price - Features (sunroof, push start button, smart key, electric seats, etc) - Performance (cc, turbo, engine type, top speed, acceleration, etc) - Fuel economy - Size - Safety features Each of them accounted for 10% of the score. That, of course, adds up to 70%. The final 30% comes from the last criteria, which comes from Consumer Voting. This gives the power to you, the viewers and readers, to determine sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year. Next, the categories. In this increasingly complicated world, it's hard to pigeonhole cars into specific classes nowadays. So, we've decided to keep it simple, and classify the entries into six basic categories, namely sedan, luxury sedan, hatchback, Sports-Utility Vehicle (SUV), Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV), and sports. However, even within each category there are a wide variety of cars to choose from, from both ends of the value spectrum. Therefore, for fairness, we've further divided each category into Premium and Normal classes. Making The Decision Apart from the thorough research and the in-depth judging criteria that were conducted for the contest, we worked out and based our choices on the ever-so-passionate testing and thorough reviews of almost every car make and model in the industry. Of course, it can't be just our opinions. As set out above, you, the readers, have a say as well through your voting. To thank you for your participation and support, we offered prizes to a few lucky voters, and you guys certainly didn't let us down. The Results When the votes were in and tallied, there were a few surprises. Needless to say, not everyone agreed, but the people have spoken. And the winners are... Hatchback - Honda Jazz Hatchback (Premium) - Volkswagen Golf Sedan - Mazda2 Sedan Sedan (Premium) - Mazda3 Sedan Luxury Sedan - Volvo S60 Luxury Sedan (Premium) - Mercedes-Benz S-Class Sports-Utility Vehicle - Honda CR-V Sports-Utility Vehicle (Premium) - Audi Q5 Multi-Purpose Vehicle - Honda Stream Multi-Purpose Vehicle (Premium) - Toyota Alphard Sports - Volkswagen Scirocco R Sports (Premium) - Audi RS5 Coupe Conclusion It had been a tough contest, but in the end, I'm sure everyone involved felt that it was worth the effort. As you can see from the pictures, the winners were certainly pleased too. We look forward to more and better contests in the coming year, and you can guarantee that sgCarMart's Cars Of The Year 2011 will be as fiercely competitive and exciting as 2010's, or even more. See you next year!

  11. As you loyal readers know, sgCarMart has an exciting contest that's going to end on the 20th of December 2010. For those who are immensely following it, yes, it's the Car of the Year 2010 and boy do we have some exciting updates for you lads. For those who hasn't - well, get clicking now, shall we? For starters, the three premium mid-sized sedans are having a really tight competition. The Mitsubishi Lancer EX, Mazda3 Sedan and Toyota Corolla Altis have been our favourites since the Japanese carmakers have created them. For now, Mitsubishi seems to be taking the lead but can it win the other two? Speaking of tight competition, it's apparent that Mazda CX-7, Nissan Murano and the Honda CR-V are having a close one too. Can the Mazda maintain its lead amongst the other hot favourites or is Honda going to overtake and realise its "power of dreams"? These million dollar questions to be answered by the 15th of December 2010. So start voting and send in your reviews to http://www.sgcarmart.com/coty2010/vote.php about the cars because one lucky reviewer is going to walk away with an Apple iPad worth $928!
  12. [extract] With the rising number of influential and gorgeous looking cars on the road, the automotive lovers at sgCarMart have decided to push the industry
  13. This is not the Passat's year. But the Europeans traditionally favour small car like Panda which won 2003 COTY. Renault Clio III won European COTY - Link A predictable but disappointing result: Renault Clio III has won this year's European Car of the Year award. It beat second place Volkswagen Passat (my favourite among the 7 finalists) by just 5 points ! disappointingly, the Clio won by consistently scoring points from all of the 58 jurors but it didn't receive any full points from any jurors. Third and fourth place go to Alfa 159 and BMW 3-series respectively, which steal points from each other. Mazda 5 MPV finished a close 5th position, then followed by the trio Toyota Aygo / Citroen C1 / Peugeot 107. Toyota Yaris came back in the last position. It must be a big disappointment to Toyota because the first generation Yaris picked the top prize 6 years ago. It isn't a surprise to me however. 1. Renault Clio: 256 points 2. Volkswagen Passat: 251 points 3. Alfa Romeo 159: 212 points 4. BMW 3-Series: 203 points 5. Mazda 5: 195 points 6. Toyota Aygo / Citroen C1 / Peugeot 107: 187 points 7. Toyota Yaris: 143 points
