  1. http://green.autoblog.com/2011/10/21/malay...mport-excise-d/ Make them exempt from import and excise duties and "robust growth" will follow. That's Malaysia's hybrid and plug-in vehicle scheme. From now through December of 2013, all hybrid and plug-in vehicles sold in Malaysia will be completely exempt from import and export duties. Malaysia's finance minister, Najib Razak, says that the duty exemption is to "promote green technology and ensure sustainable development" by encouraging domestic assembly of electric vehicles and hybrids. Kavan Mukhtyar, Frost & Sullivan's transportation head for the Asia-Pacific region, says the duty exemptions will indeed encourage automakers to launch hybrids in Malaysia: This will drive robust growth in the hybrid market over the next few years. We expect hybrid volumes to exceed 10,000 units [annually] by 2013. 10,000. That's not much, is it? Well, since Toyota sold only 162 Prius hybrids in Malaysia through the first eight months of 2011, moving up to 10,000 hybrids sold there per year would be quite an achievement.
  2. http://www.propertyguru.com.sg/property-management-news/2013/11/36861/govt-urged-to-promote-healthy-property-market The Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (Redas) has urged the government to ensure that the property market remains healthy, media reports said. Speaking at the association’s 54th anniversary dinner last Friday, Redas President Chia Boon Kuah stated: “It is our hope that the government will calibrate its land sales programme to ensure land supply at a pace that will contribute to the overall health of the market.” He noted that “as long as homes are purchased with sound reasoning, we believe in riding out each cycle that comes our way”. “We have faith that the government will continue to monitor the movements in Singapore's property cycle, and ensure a balance between development viability and housing affordability.” He also revealed that while the industry has achieved success, it has had its share of challenges, which include dealing with the effects of the government’s seventh and most comprehensive round of cooling measures and the introduction of the total debt servicing ratio (TDSR). Furthermore, the expiry of the lock-in period of the Seller Stamp Duty from now till 2017 and the large supply of homes coming on-stream continue to weigh on the industry’s mind, said Chia. I was just wondering what the general consensus among MCFers is? Are we hoping that property prices will come down significantly so that we can buy in (remember that your current property price will also decrease in value should you require to sell before you buy) or do we all hope the property prices will continue on this crazy bull run (remembering should you choose to upgrade the next property you buy will also be relatively higher)?

  4. From Yahoo!News: Minister of State for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin announced on Monday new guidelines targeting discriminatory practices against Singaporeans such as job advertisements indicating that foreigners are preferred and the preferential hiring of foreigners over suitable Singaporeans. These new guidelines were drawn up in response to the high number of cases -- 51 in the first nine months of this year -- of unfair treatment based on nationality lodged with the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (Tafep), reported The Straits Times. Here are three case studies on why Singaporeans are lodging complaints of preferential treatment: .Case study 1: Foreigners hire fellow countrymen - A Singaporean complains that a foreign manager in her IT firm prefers his own countrymen to qualified Singaporeans. Management tells Tafep that it had trouble finding suitable local candidates, but later admits some departments have seen an increased representation from a particular country in recent years. Company then agrees to hire and develop Singaporeans as its workforce core. Case study 2: Discriminatory practices by an employment agency - An employment agency specialising in foreign recruitment raves about why foreign workers are better than Singaporeans in an e-mail to clients. The agency corrects its e-mail and pledges not to do so again after Tafep steps in. Manager involved is counselled and makes a public apology while staff are sent for relevant training. Manpower Ministry issues a written warning to the agency after conducting its own investigations. Case study 3: Over-reliance on foreigners - A chief executive was swamped by complaints from his local staff about the company hiring too many foreigners from a certain country. CEO was surprised of this practice as he was not aware of it. Many employees left for another company which hired less foreigners. .Tan, who was speaking at a tripartism forum, stressed that while foreigners are still welcome to work in Singapore, the core of a company's workforce must remain Singaporean. The Member of Parliament for Marine Parade group representation constituency said that even though the government is tightening its grip on importing foreign labour, employers on the ground must still be watchful over their actions as many Singaporeans have expressed displeasure over discriminatory practices in their workplace.

  6. How many of you (or your children) play cricket? I never knew there is a cricket league in Sengkang?! S$200,000 to push sports in the north-east by Patwant Singh 04:47 AM May 23, 2011SINGAPORE - A new fund of S$200,000 was launched yesterday to promote sports culture in the North-East Community Development Council (CDC). Cricket and football will be the first two sports targeted. The programme was launched at an open field at Compassvale, in the company of five Members of Parliament from the area - Teo Ser Luck, Michael Palmer, Dr Janil Puthucheary, Zainal Sapari and Gan Thiam Poh. All tried their hands at cricket, which will make use of the fund by organising coaching clinics for neighbourhood schools. The sport has a considerable following in the area, with the two-year-old Sengkang Cricket league growing in popularity. The competition currently features 12 teams and a base of around 150 players. Yesterday, Teo, the Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Mayor of North East CDC, said: "Sports is one way to bond our community, and to me it is one of the most effective activities to integrate our citizens together, new or local citizens." Previously the Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, Teo revealed he would maintain his links with the sporting world. "Currently, I will still be leading some of the committees that I have been chairing, like the Olympic Pathway Programme, Youth Sports Development and some of the other smaller projects that I have been doing with sports," he said. "While I can always extend my help when it is needed, I think renewal and succession planning is always good for injecting new ideas and new energy into all these projects nationally."
