  1. Is it true that the legal sector charge clients like what is being accused here by Mdm Chang for such cases? Any lawyer bros or bros familiar with such care to comment? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_773737.html Offer guidelines for legal fees Published on Mar 5, 2012 I RECENTLY engaged a lawyer to settle a tenancy dispute. I was told that legal costs are time-based and my straightforward case would cost about $5,000. However, the final bill came up to $23,000 - about five times the original estimate. The lawyer claimed that the additional costs arose because he had to spend more time on my case, submitting five affidavits instead of three as expected initially. The charges were billed over three instalments, two of which amounting to $20,000 were when the case was in progress and I felt compelled to pay so as not to jeopardise the proceedings. Then came the final bill of $3,000. I called the Law Society of Singapore, only to find out that there are no guidelines for legal fees, unlike for the medical profession, which until recently had them to guard against overcharging. I was told to find out about the fees charged by other lawyers, and was given figures of $4,000 and $5,000 by two law firms. Proportionally speaking, if three affidavits cost $5,000, five should cost only about $8,000. And if the affidavits are largely the same, with each subsequent one incorporating new points to refute the rebuttals of the defendant, should the fees not be incremental instead of being multiples of five? There should be fee guidelines to ensure that professionals are not given a free hand when billing their clients. The Law Society and the Consumers Association of Singapore should look into how legal fees are charged. Chang Lee Lee (Madam)

  3. Hi I am currently driving a 2008 Nissan Murano 2.5L. The car comes with reverse camera and a touch screen. However, whenever I activate the camera by reversing the car, the grid lines (or guidelines) doesn't appear. Does anyone know how to "activate" it? or infact it doesn't come with the grid lines to begin with? Thank you.
  4. Hi Mods , http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2633346-forum-rules-guidelines/ It is mentioned in the guideline the following :- •Slanderous, defamatory, obscene, violent, abusive, threatening and harassing comments will not be allowed. •Respect the viewpoints of others, even if you may not agree with them. Agree to disagree. Do not leave lots of blank lines in your post * Posting with lots of blanks lines will be deleted. However, here you have a mod who not only not respect other view points, but also call names. Worse of all , distort my view about and make it racial. This was repeated in the post. If my view is not approriate, you could delete it , give me warning etc. However, to say all these things as a MOD is totally unbecoming. I understand all MOD are on volunteers, and I respect that . However, in this case, i think Radx should be remove from the moderators team because he is narrow-minded in his moderation. I have never infer that I am prejurdice against Schoolings because of their race. I am just upset that the mum choses to remain PR not a singaporean. http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2699784-quahschooling-win-bronze-medals-in-fina/ well....at least 1 in this thread seems to think so, and lamenting of double standards bla blah..... kekekeke...bitch
  5. If a car owner receives payment from those who car pool with him, is he operating a pirate taxi service? Or is he merely in an arrangement similar to when people split the bill for a meal? The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is expected to come up with an answer as an increasing number pay for car pooling services, as an alternative to public transport and car ownership. A number of car pooling sites have already sprouted. Among the latest and most prominent is ShareTransport.sg, which has been pairing car-poolers with car owners for the past 20 months. It says it has 15,000 users now, and expects to exceed 20,000 next year. The LTA has been keeping an eye on the development for about two years now, but has not come out with rules on payment. "LTA is supportive of car pooling as it provides greater transport choices to the commuting public. We are working on guidelines to mitigate any potential abuse of car pooling as illegal taxi services," a spokesman said. Mr Moh Hon Meng, 44, who started ShareTransport.sg in March last year, said simple rules might include requiring that drivers have full-time jobs, and not rely on car pooling payments as their main source of income. Also, rides must be "on the way" - meaning, if car owners live in Hougang and work in Shenton Way, they cannot drop someone off in Jurong. And charges should be based on a "cost recovery" principle and not a profit-making one. "Even if we have altruistic drivers who are all willing to give free rides, passengers would not want to take them, because they will feel bad. The passengers actually want to pay their share," said technopreneur Moh, who co-founded online unit trust distributor Fundsupermart.com more than 10 years ago. A driver stands to recoup up to $600 a month in costs by offering car pooling services, he added. ShareTransport.sg user Kimberley Ang, 46, said she used the service for about a year. "I paid $5 for a ride from my home in Sengkang to PSA Building in Alexandra Road. A cab ride would cost $26," she said. "It's convenient, it's safe, and I made friends along the way." The marketing manager however, has stopped car pooling since changing jobs recently. There is no match yet for a driver going from Sengkang to Pandan Loop, her new place of work. She put that down to not enough people knowing about car pooling. "It's a great idea, but there's not enough awareness yet. Which is strange, because in the old days, people used to car pool to get into the CBD," she said, referring to the time when cars with four occupants or more could enter the city centre without paying for an area-licensing coupon. That was dropped in 1994, when drivers began picking up passengers from bus stops. On the flip side, some observers believe taxi drivers are likely to complain if car pooling becomes more prevalent. "For obvious reasons, this will not go down well with cabbies," said veteran taxi driver Tony Pang, 63. Another cabby Victor Yow, 67, however, said car pools will not be a threat. "They are likely to operate during peak hours, when there are more commuters than taxis can cater to." Still, car-poolers feel the LTA should come out with clear, enforceable rules to separate those who share rides from those who run illegal cab operations. Said Mr Moh, whose site also lets people share a cab or even a bus: "It should be clear what car pooling is, and what providing a transport service is." Car pooling is catching on in a big way in America, Europe and parts of Asia. Mr Brian Hsu, a 32-year-old New Zealand-based Taiwanese who runs a software business in China, hosts Carpool King, which offers car pool listings in Singapore and a few other places in the region. Mr Hsu said: "I started Carpool King in 2007. I was commuting and got stuck in traffic jams every day. When I looked around, most vehicles were single-occupant ones like mine. So I started this service for financial, societal and environmental benefits." Of the 15,000-plus registered Carpool King users, nearly 5,000 are in Singapore. 6. I guess this would be a timely reminder now in the midst of sooo many recent threads and lots of flare going up again. I decided it is time to revisit some cordial rules that has kept MCF sane all these years. Have seen MCF also grow into more responsible posts and knowledgeable posts from various parties and thanks for that. Here are the basics i can think of, but not exhaustive: 1. Agree to Disagree While we get caught up in discussions and want our viewpoints heard, let's also respect that others have theirs. If you disagree, then just move on and agree to disagree. By doing that, you basically save your own BP as well as respect that others have their viewpoints as well. It does not ruin your life nor make your life anymore miserable. So, state your point, move on and leave it as that. The worst thing one can do is FORCE the views down somebody's throat. Life is already stressed, let's not add to that here. 2. Getting Personal This is not the Porker-Turboflat4 kind of personal.... This I notice happens on the odd occasion where ppl get embroiled in attacking the person for what they say and putting the person down thenceforth. Address the issue, NOT the person, please! Discuss and look at the bigger picture rather than begrudgement of a certain character or their attributes, etc. The MODs do note certain characters and watch their every move should they post in a certain way, and that too, is not begrudgement of the character but for the sanity of the forum at large. We have seen in the real world that it can get pretty ugly judging from recent events that have also occurred out there. 3. Politics Time and again, we have mentioned, no politics, please. MCF tends to attract certain kinds of visitors and although I have noted certain threads, they are for general discussion and while they border and tether on the brink, will let it stay. Once it gets out of hand, I would have to step in to call a close. This is also for the benefit of the existence of this place. There are other places out there for putting your hand in it, should you wish to, but let's not go down that lane here. Most importantly, substantiate your claims These are the few that have come off my head since the last week or so and let's keep the spirit of MCF alive as we know this to be a place where most of us get our news and information as well as to just chill out. Feel free to add should you want to. Good night all!
  7. To all MCF members (new, current, seniors etc), With the amount of new members we get coming into MCF and participating in the discussions, I think this might be a good time to bring to your attention the "Guidelines on Posting Rules" as stated in the "Terms of Use" link at the bottom of the MCF main page. The Terms of Use link is as follows: http://www.mycarforum.com/show.cgi?do=show...sclaimer;left=1 At the bottom of this page will be the following extract: Guidelines on Posting Rules Slanderous, defamatory, obscene, violent, abusive, threatening and harassing comments will not be allowed. Refrain from posting information which is not publicly available. Pls declare vested interest (if any) on the topic you are discussing No personal attacks on other participants No profanity or obscenities of any kind. Please do not stray from the discussion topic. No political or racial comments will be allowed. No impersonation of other participants or public figures. No multiple postings No advertisement or solicitation of any kind - for advertising enquiry, please send an email to [email protected] . No copyrighted material is allowed. Please use links instead. No FULL CAPS postings. In internet, CAPS equates to shouting. I do hope that we can all contribute fruitfully to the forum and make it an enjoyable place for everyone to be in. Cheers to one and all and do enjoy your time in MCF !
  8. Romantic meals right at the edge of the Singapore River will soon become a thing of the past at Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay, when new rules on outdoor refreshment areas kick in this week. Under new guidelines from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), diners' tables cannot be placed right by the riverside. The aim, it said, is to "free up the riverfront for public access". The new rules are effective immediately, but the URA said it would give operators "sufficient time" to clear the riverside tables. Outdoor tables on the side of the walkway away from the river can stay, and restaurants can also apply to develop second-storey extensions from buildings to create dining areas there. 9. What do you think? Channelnewsasia article -------------------- New learning guidelines to be introduced for young children By the end of this year, there will be a formal set of developmental and curriculum guidelines for children aged between 18 months and six years. Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing revealed this in an exclusive Singapore Tonight interview. The guidelines will not only help parents get their children to learn at a pace suited to their age but also benchmark the childcare sector. With different operators offering a diverse range of programmes, parents shopping for their child's development programmme are sometimes at a loss. Experts have said the key lies in choosing programmes that are

  19. OK here are some that many newbies should be aware about. There is all this talk about modding and many don't seem to know the consequences and I'm not talking about hefty LTA fines. The usual story about making your car more effective is only in modifying one of it's other characteristics.. If you want to corner faster you can uprate your suspension, so you get worse ride. If you want more power, you lose fuel efficiency If you make the car lighter, you lose soundproofing and comfort Exhaust - more noise So generally speaking, there is little optimising left to do on modern production cars.. The only thing left to do is change the balance and purpose for which you aim its usage, whether you want slightly more comfort or slightly more performance. Or.....get the right car for the right purpose in the first place to get rid of this modding disease.
