richard_crl032 6th Gear January 16, 2019 Share January 16, 2019 Yes. To a seasoned driver, even a sedated one such as myself, some of the features are sometimes distraction and hindrance as opposed to being a help. For example, the lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning and the blind spot sensors. Blind spot sensors don't help me very much because of the way I adjust my wing mirrors. I don't have blind spots. The only exception is under very heavy downpour where visibility is just s*** anyway, then it's great that there's a radar looking at the other lane to warn me there's someone there. Lane departure warning (LDWS) is annoying sometimes because the system cannot distinguish the lane markings on a "normal" road vs the markings on a merging lane. Inevitably it buzzes and tells me I'm going off course when I'm like "Duh, it's a freaking merging lane". Lane-keep assist (LKAS) is again, useful mainly in low visibility situations when it's hard to make out lane markings. So I feel that their utility is somewhat situational to a seasoned driver? What do you guys think? Especially those with Executive and up since that comes with most of the safety tech already. Hi DK, For me, I like gadgetries and loves the HUD which displays speed limit, speed limit warning, bsm, lane departure and navigation .. without moving your head ... wish I have it in my forester. I also absolutely love bsm technology and have aftermkt one fitted in my forester. Do not believd you can ever have no blindspot .. imagine you take your eyes off to look ahead and a motorcyclist sped up behind you and overtakes from either side or I believe all drivers will have lapse in concentration .. accident does not happen everyday but certainly does and that it nearly happens, these safety advancement will save us a lot of trouble and save precious lives. Btw, you can set sensitivity in some of these gadgets and you can also disable it since optional like having $ to decide to spend or not to spend ... isn't that great... lol ! My 10 cents and cheers. Richard Hi Richard, You just need to get a new forester with Eyesight. That will automatically give you autonomous emergency braking plus dynamic cruise-control with stop and go. There is going to be a trade-off in power however, still can't compare to your XT.

Hi DK, Thanks but that will never happen .. Indeed power of the fxt is what made me plough back the sgd30k difference from planned harrier turbo into mods and I will not be able to rectify the aesthetics of 2019 forester to my liking. Moreover, I test drove impreza thrice for my wife's replacement car and about to sign the PO until I realised MI does not install solar film due to concern of the eyesight system. Btw, I just understand that MI skipped face recognition:( Cheers. Richard Edited January 17, 2019 by richard_crl032

Upgrading from a 10-year old Toyota Altis. Thanks all :) Suggest you test-drive the new Altis as well as the 2.0L Mazda 6. Have colleagues who own a pre-FL Mazda 6 2.0L and find that its pick-up is a bit sluggish. However, the Mazda 6 is undeniably better-looking than the Altis, and is arguably a different category of car already (luxury sedan or large family sedan). It also has nicer features, especially if you're willing to splurge more for the safety features of the Executive trim. It does have some issues with NVH, but nothing that can't be solved or mitigated with after-market fixes (just ask Richard). You do get quite a lot of car for your money when you get a Mazda 6. Having said that, it's always good to cast your net wide initially. Do have a look at the Contis as well. Skoda and VW lowered the prices on their large family sedans of late and offer good value for money as well. Of course you'll have to factor in stuff like maintenance costs in the long run and reliability but that's up to you to decide. Actually considered changing to Contis for a long time, but got scared off by the maintenance costs and potential issues (like the gearbox) since my family will probably intend to drive the new car for another 10 years... What is NVH? Not that familiar with car terms, apologies! Is it a huge issue? Mazda 6 looks good but from what I've read, I'm a bit concerned about the small back seat / boot space. How is the new Altis? Family wants a change but if it is nice, might consider also... :)

Mazda 6 does have an issue with the smaller-than-expected back seat space and boot space. I think in this segment few can beat the Skoda Superb. New Altis is not bad. Of course, as with any Toyota, nothing really mind-blowing (Toyotas tend to be outstandingly average). But surprisingly perky engine and offers good passenger comfort all around. The main trouble with Toyotas is pricing. They are more expensive in their respective segments than any other Japanese makes, in some cases even rivalling the contis.

Ya, Toyota is reliable, but getting boring! I see, regarding the NVH. So in your experience, the NVH of Mazda cars is worse compared to other brands? I haven't test driven the Mazda 6 but how bad is the small back seat space and boot space? If the difference is negligible, then might be such a huge issue for me :) My family did test drive Skoda before, but didn't like the "feel" of the car... Anyway we think we will stick to Jap cars for now Thanks for your detailed responses once again. ↡ Advertisement
