Eugn86 3rd Gear January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 Have friends who worked in Porsche, Alfa and Volkswagen service centres before... They commented Volkswagen cars are really problematic. Only the people on the ground truly knows if the brand produces good reliable cars. The twin-charge engines are problematic as they are too complex and costly, and unlikely to be reliable in the long run. Volkswagen obviously understood this and that is why they are replacing the twin-charge engines with a single turbocharger. The DSG gearbox also has a high failure rate. Eugn86 3rd Gear January 28, 2012 Share January 28, 2012 (edited) T4 1.6L turbocharged is 9s (180bhp 240nm) Passat 1.8TSI turbocharged is 8.5s (160bhp 250nm) in this case, 20bhp more but 10nm torque less, volvo T4 is still slower. probably due to difference in weight and gearbox difference. DSG gives better FC too (14.3km/L vs volvo's 13.5km/L claimed) of course, one might argue that volvo is heavier and thus safer. but initial discussion is about power another case is peugeot 508, 1.6L turbocharged, 9.2s century sprint with 156bhp and 240nm. much lighter than volvo but still slower. bhp doesnt mean everything. but S60 is a looker Volkswagen's DSG has been tuned to s--t as quickly as possible which explains why they are quite jerky in the lower gears. This is evident on the manufacturer's 0-100km/h time claims, the DSG model has a better timing compared to the model with a manual gearbox. Volvo's Powershift is meant to replace the traditional automatic gearbox hence the lower gears shift more slowly to provide a smooth seamless shift. You don't get the jerk from a DSG gearbox. The S60 T4 Manual does 0-100km/h in 8.3 seconds, whereas the Powershift does it in 9 seconds. BTW, Volkswagen has that "barp" sound when it changes gears... Volvo has too but much softer. Volvo's T4 Ecoboost engine is a much stronger engine than the Peugeot's 156bhp engine. I own 2 Peugeots with the Prince engine before (one AL4, the other AL6), now am driving the Volvo. The Prince engine runs out of breath beyond 5000rpm and is really leathergic below 2000rpm, the Ecoboost just pulls strongly from 1500rpm till 6000rpm, totally in a different league. Finally, I will never get a Peugeot again. Agent is hopeless, and their cars are only meant to look good and nothing else. Would appreciate some feedback from owners of cars with this gearbox on their experience with it over the pass year or so. Any improvements?

I am also waiting to see if any twincharged engines can survive and last over time. It is an irony that the twincharged engine once won international awards and accolades. Jerrcik 1st Gear May 5, 2013 Share May 5, 2013 Wonderful cars... Please support and buy more VW. Don't buy other make, VW is the best U Sir, Type your message like a typical ignorant FT. VW is best in unreliability? Changing a gearbox twice within a pathetic mileage of 40,000km? It is good when you drive out from the showroom, hopeless in the short run. Dun talk about long run. However, i would agree on the older models of VWs, back in 90s. But still, they are not as reliable as most brands out there.

No major issues apart from normal servicing and usual wear and tear. Some even went to the tracks frequently back and forth. I am not saying this because I drive a VW (different model). Whitecrow 1st Gear May 5, 2013 Share May 5, 2013 Good luck if you are still thinking of the DSG. Mine was upgraded 2x and mechatronics replaced on the 3rd time, still shift like sh.t. It's actually quite dangerous as it has a very long throttle lag in 2nd gear. Many times the driver behind me was upset because I switch to the right lane to overtake and the car wouldn't accelerate for a good 2 seconds after I was in the right lane! What's worse was overtaking on 2-way B-roads in Malaysia. It's very dangerous because on-coming traffic is approaching and if driver behind me is also overtaking, (s)he has to slam the brake because my car wasn't moving! How to explain the furious driver behind I have floored the pedal but the car not accelerating? I was so pissed that I sold the car last month despite knowing that a recall is imminent. Not good for my blood pressure, "Das Auto!".
