Do we need to replace ATF fluid if WS spec fluid is used?

I have this worry too, and thus the recent replacement, but the old ATF drained out, revealed, similar colour as new ATF

Especially those drained from rear axle, 4 yrs.

My last car, according to the manufacturer, no need to change ATF fluid. I always serviced my car at the agent, so they never changed this.

After 5 years, my gearbox broke. Agent told me the first thing they wanted to try was to change ATF fluid... [mad]

Was that a BMW ?

Read quite a bit on other forums on Auto transmission breakdowns for the earlier types of no oil change designs.

That's why I decided to drain out the GBs and see for myself.

Haven't decided yet how frequent should I or not replace ATF again. Price is not an issue, at RM$105 x 2 4L tins. Drain and refill is also easily done with 10mm Allan key wrench.

More important to know if this no oil change design is reliable and don't really need oil change as descriped.

Auto GB replacement is the dreaded nightmare for auto gear owners.

2nd hand GB will easily burn $3k off your wallet.

Neutral Newbie

hi folks,

needs help on the following issue, I am driving a 2010 Honda accord(auto transmission) from Kah motor. Mileage is about 120,000 km and just did a auto transmission oil change at a workshop and of course regular servicing.

But recently, every alternate days, when I start the engine, there is always a whinning sound and it gets louder when I starts to move off from the car park lot(Multi storey car park). The sound will be there until I hit the pie when I travelling abt 60-70kmph.

When I slow down and starts driving again(like at the traffic lights, it comes back again.

The whinning sound gets louder today when I am doing reverse parking, turning the steering wheel, the sound gets louder.

There's definitely something wrong, so would like to hear from fellow forummers , what could be a likely issue.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Seems strange that turning the steering wil affect the auto transmission.

More likely its the Power Steering fluid n pump. Chk if the fluid level is at "Full" mark.

Maybe u sud get yr ws to change the PS fluid n check for leaks to the system. Steering rack tends to leak when the seals r worn.

there r 2 low n 2 high levels, 1 when cold, the other when hot, meaning engine fully warmed up n driven for a while. Usually, both when checked at respective conditions should be same level when read at cold n hot markings. Look under front wheels for dampness at boots as well.

The cold readings r just a reference when filling up.

Always use the HOT reading for more accuracy.

Even Autobox, I always drive for abt 30 mins then take the HOT reading n top up accordingly for a more accurate reading.

could be wheel bearing.

But reverse parking he moving very slow unlikely the bearings wil hv whining sound?

its not your autotrans but your power steering system .

check for leaks at hose and if found none, flush the power steering reservoir tank and replace with new PSF.

This is an infamous factory defect of most 2.4L engine from honda.

I've read my service manual over and over again... never mentioned anywhere that states need to change ATF... it only states to check every 20k. And i've been following the steps in the manual to check..on top of the checks done during servicing by my mechanic. so far the ATF still looks good. Bright red witrh no signs of discoloration or drop in volume.

then start to read alot on forums saying must change ATF every 20k or something. Went to mazda motors(old) and was told no need to change one, just inspect, if good no need to change. [confused] I do have friend driving same model as mine who has never changed his atf...now 150k liao...still problem free.

but then i hum ji still changed it during 80k. now 110k liao..

Just to update that those looking for Khang Auto is at Toa Payoh Lorong 8, Tan Chong showroom 2nd floor. Apparently they are TC designated workshop.

A mth ago I experienced gear slipping, cannot engage gear, or sometimes stuck in gear. Decided to go to khang's, and after 2 weeks downtime, car came back like new. When I was there, i realize that almost all the cars there are doing GB overhaul. All the cars had the bonnet lift up inside no GB one [grin]

So I suppose if you want to do GB, can go down to Khang's, Raymond's experience is best in the business,

All workshops have their positive and negative reviews lah. My previous car 3 months after their overhaul had the same problem again. Their "warranty" of their work is only 1 month...

Good for you. My previous car the agent also say no need to change ATF.

I always went back to the agent for servicing (not cheap, mind you, cos it was a continental car). After 5+ years, the gearbox started slipping.

The service staff said that they will "try changing ATF". Siao liao... I paid for the expensive ATF but problem was still there.

Then the service staff said they do not service gearboxes, only replace. A gearbox costs $13K. I said "nevermind". Then they said "Don't worry, we can get you a refurbished one at $8K". I said "nevermind".

To those who always say that the "agent knows best", I say you're naive. Not only unable to monitor ATF/gearbox condition, but no skill to service the gearbox...

What's the problem with your GB?

they said some parts worn off and had to change... but obviously they didn't get the actual problem / part(s) since the same problem recurred after 3 months.
