Horrible Accident on NSHW

Very sad to read this news. Pray the bereaved can be consoled while the killed RIP.

This accident could have been avoided IF ONLY the aggressive and probably a conceited, egoistic and senseless trailer driver who was the root cause of the accident had been more patient, sensible and RESPONSIBLE road user.

Alas, unlike past heavy vehicle drivers of Malaysia who tend to be more courteous, sensible and responsible, today's heavy vehicle drivers who took over their older predecessors are a different animal altogether. The trend of having more reckless heavy vehicle drivers of today seems obvious if you had driven and make comparison between driving on Malaysian roads back in the 70s and today.

Drive safe folks and give way even if you have the rights for the sake of being safe. It's better to lose a war and win the battle than winning the war and loses a battle.

It may seem prejudice but just going by the narration of the proton driver will give anyone an inkling of what could have happened which caused the 1st trailer to end up in a ditch while the 2nd trailer rammed the proton to unrecognisable state.

I'll revisit this post to take back the prejudice if the finding eventually exonerate the driver who rammed the proton and claimed innocent lives. [shakehead]

When you're driving on NSHW, make sure to watch for any large vehicles in front or behind you.

 

If you see any untoward sign, better anticipate your next move, to stay the hell away from them.

 

I've seen coaches chionging with me on hilly Karak highway.

The coach tilts dangerously at bends, but the idiot driver still keep pushing.

 

I'd stay away from him.

Yes. That's right i.e. to stay away from such drivers for the sake of your safety and your loved ones.

Landrover Defender a little better than that flattened Proton Saga, TS mentioned. No idea how a new Volvo could withstand being hit by a bus/truck, just like a Landrover Defender.

 

Of course the Defender is better than the Saga. There are lots of cars that could do better than the Saga. This is more of an height issue. Many people would say taller is better, yes it's true to a certain extend. Here's video of a Discovery (not Defender but around the same gen) against a Espace.

I was struck in the mother of all jams while on my way to East-West Highway to have some driving fun

 

Apparently they closed off the whole section of the N-S highway and make us exit at Ipoh. I made a detour down to have lunch hoping the situation will be improved as I dont have GPS with me and I need to exit Kuala Kangsar which is just the next stop. Imagine driving 6 hours non-stop and the last exit is fenced off.

 

After 1 hour lunch I tried to head back to the highway and was stopped.

 

No choice but to try my best to take the small windy kampong road to Chemor and head off to Sungei Siput to go Lengong and Gerik. Man the jam was so atrocious that the journey was 100% jammed all the way for at least 20km. It took me 2 hours just to reach Sungei Siput.

 

Must agree that once you reach NS highway, esp during festive seasons, you lives become cheap. On my way there I already saw 2 dead bodies ( both motorbikes ) around Rawang and KL area. They were covered with clothing by the other passerbys while waiting for ambulance/polis to come.

 

And I saw at least 4 other accidents.

 

Told myself never to drive on NS highway during festive season again!

I was driving to KL last weekend on sat. Jam ( stop n move ) for the first about 50km from JB. After malacca rain heavily and I was overtook by a kancil which was speeding about 120km/h during heavy rain, 200m in front of me i saw the kancil skided and hit into center railings. Front car was badly damaged.

 

My rules on NSHW, i will driver abit faster to get out of bus / coach / lorry. So my avg speed about 130km/140km/h. I will move out of situation where by the chances of being hit by other cars when they skid. But when rain, will keep about 80/ 90km/h. Drive safe everyone.

its not just the speed, its that u cannot see beyond 20-30m in front of u, worse if some drivers dont switch on lights or hazard. doesnt matter if driving 4wd etc. shld always slow down when v heavy rain, also braking distance is greatly affected.

RIP to the deceased, the use of safety belts even in the back seat can never be over emphasised.

 

It is mandatory for passengers in the back seat to be belted up in Australia.... once I got caught in a RBT driving with a friend's child without a seat restraint. I had actually belted her up properly but she throwing her tantrums had gotten the restraint undone...no amount of appealing waived the hefty $305 fine and double demerits I had incurred. [knife]

Two Fridays ago, I drove to KL using NSHW in heavy rain. Visibility was poor but I had to drive on using the slow lane as it was more dangerous to stop at roadside. I could see those luxury cars speeding away. Even the lorries and buses overtook cars on the slow lane like nothing (no police to do speed trap on them in the rain). Can't imagine the consequence if those vehicles had to jam brake.

 

Worse, some idiots didn't even switch on their headlights. Wait, some didn't even switch on any lights.

On the NSH it is the norm, and frankly speaking, having driven in the super heavy rain a number of times I prefer that people do it. It does make a very big difference to the visibility. Even when some cars turn on headlights they are less visible than if also turn on hazard lights.

 

It is a lot lot easier to see a car that has its flashers on - of course, when you do it, must also adjust driving style a little (as in, not change lanes)

Yes. Blinking hazard lights gets attention immediately and engages defensive driving in others. Belly useful.

 

Quite sad they pass away in such a manner.

Always be serious on the road, especially on holiday.

NSHW exit is in double digits kilometer, whereas in Singapore expressway exit is so close to each other. So in terms of hazard light , there is no much of a problem in nshw. Whereas in Singapore, it would be very confusing as every now and then , there will have vehicles enter and exit of expressway and a lot more frequencies of lane changing.

I find there is significant difference between tire with less than 4mm of tread depth left, against the new tire. [thumbsup] 1.6mm tread depth not really effective if there is any water ponding along the road surface. [sweatdrop][thumbsdown]

 

It depends on the tread design. I like Michelin tyres

Actually, that's the safest way to drive. Rain on NSH is always patches. Once u get out of certain patch, it is dry road ahead.

 

So, it is safer to get out of the rain ASAP.

 

i usually drive 110km/h to get out of the rain. In addition, with higher speed, it will heighten one situational awareness.

Hazard light is the worst. If hazardous, don't drive.

 

With hazard light, i am confused whether the car is stationary or not.

Just checked my car in the carpark, hope everything is fine, leaving for KL at 6am with family.
