Is scoot ever cheaper once you pay for baggage and seats?

I agree. The savings sometimes don't make sense.

I travel 2A2C and i used to get the ? "flybagscoot" which comes with 20kg allowance for all passengers which i don't really need. I did that for taiwan last year but brought only 2 check in luggages.

So that was quoted as just below 1.1k for my recent booking to BKK.  Which doesn't make sense since SQ would have been about 1270 for equivalent full service.

But recently i realised that u can just add baggage allowance for myself alone (since it was just a 3D2N trip) i just needed one check in luggage. So that came out to about $970.

Nope. Short hop to KL or Bkk can still tahan no food, no entertainment, no check in baggage, no seat reservation

But long haul on budget airline? By the time u add up all these long haul essentials, the savings are negligible

In fact, even for SG-KL flights, SQ is sometimes even cheaper than budget airlines esp during those public holiday long weekends. I even got upgraded to biz class on SQ once for less than budget airline basic fare....lol

Frankly none of those things you mentioned are considered essentials (no need food but please gimme water!) to me even for long haul so I appreciate a pay as you use model.

But cannot cut safety and reliability.

The problem with all these budget airlines is that they operate on a very thin line everyday. That means, they have no standby plane or spare parts or crew anywhere in the world.

So if anything happens to your budget flight, they got NO backup or standby resources. They don't even have an office in some countries.

Their business model is based on 100% operational (No screw up), because they don't have a backup plan.

This is what exactly happened to Scoot (Greece), or the other budget airline (Melbourne)

That's the reason why they can charge slightly lower fares. But u get what you pay for.

In a full airline, they always have standby plane or crew. Even dont have, they can rely on other airlines for assistance (member of airline group) example, Star Alliance. And they have office representatives in countries.

Buy travel insurance.

When Scoot was first launched years ago, my family took the flight to Sydney.  It was ok and cheap, $600 per pax return.

Since then we have taken Scoot a few times to nearer destinations (e.g. HK, BKK), but often we get hit with delays, though nothing as bad as the recently reported ones.

Overall, you get what you pay for.  Scoot is a low-cost airline, so in all areas they need to cut cost.  This means that when their flight is delayed, you'll not get much service recovery, and also they don't have additional planes to spare to be deployed etc.

seriously, $265.50 nett per pax to HK on a full service airline SQ

i don't understand why people still take Scoot to HK [hur]

Took budget once. It is a scam. After factoring in cost for my family to be seated together, F&B, excess luggage, lack of service for everything, i wonder why people still take Scoot or other budget airlines. You even had to pay for drinking water.

Did SIA start Scoot to maintain profit margin? Since SIA is a premium airlines and they are transferring more flight slots to Scoot, to maintain margin, they will have to cut cost more than others, which they probably can't, so they are, from my observation, more expensive than the real budget carriers. True or I am biased?

You need to manage your expectation when taking budget.

When i take budget, the only thing i pay extra is luggage & cup noodle.

Water can always get from airport.  I carry 1L empty bottle on board.

I understand the concept of paying for what u need but the saving is really not negligible. Unless you book really early? But full service airlines can be cheap if u book in advance as well.

12 hr to Europe is usually split into 2 legs but yeah, the last times I went to Europe, I just skipped all the meals even tho it was full service (Lufthansa and finnair).

Entertainment can be resolved by downloading a couple of good books on my Kindle or I'll just sleep. Worse comes to worse watch Netflix movies on my phone.

Baggage - on biz trip usually just a carry on? Only need 1 check in if it is a family trip.

Assigned seating - unless family trip, where kids need to sit together, I don't see the need for assigned seating. For biz trip, our admin chooses the seat for me anyway, I don't have any preference.

It's because you sat budget and expected (and paid for) full service.

And you also consider the savings negligible because you are not really price sensitive.

Budget airline is for budget travellers. Not towkay like you la.
