Li Xuan had two fingers severed, thumb half-severed and deep cuts up to her wrist.

A 14-year-old girl was helping her father at his drinks stall in a hawker centre at Toa Payoh Lorong 8 when her hand got caught in a sugarcane juicer.
According to a report in The New Paper, the machine exerted so much pressure on Tan Li Xuan's hand that it crushed three fingers and tore off the skin on the wrist.
Shin Min Daily News reports that the incident took place at around 8.40pm on Sunday (Dec 22).
Li Xuan's father, Mr Tan Ah Guan, said he was packing some things when he suddenly heard his daughter shouting.
When he turned over, he saw her right hand stuck in the machine.
He immediately cut off the power to stop the machine and called the police and the SCDF.
The machine was dismantled before Li Xuan's hand was freed. She was sent to Tan Tock Seng hospital.

good opportunity for our poly/ite to do a project & make these machine safer.

In this day & age - still using machines which can 'swallow' fingers is not very acceptable.

agree .... I remember seeing something on TV about this worktop saw that can detect the hand's moisture and stop in an instant, causing no damage/harm to the hand. Some proximity sensor stuff. poor girl, now she must live the rest of her life with deformed hand

Twincharged

Read in the straits times that this happened after they changed to a newer machine which was supposed to be safer. Previously her father did not allow her to use the machine as the old machine was supposedly more dangerous.

Supposedly this juicer was already a "safer" model with a guard, according to news report.

No matter what safety features are there, the only sure prevention is proper training and personal self-preservation instinct.

Many people are not aware of the power of rotating machinery. It's not really the speed, but the huge torque that can impart sudden acceleration to whatever it catches.

Extremely unsafe to fiddle around these machines unless power has been disconnected and locked out.

The father will blame himself for life I'm pretty sure. This is so unfortunate.

Yup, saw the news on Sunday and was thinking the dad will definitely live with guilt for the rest of his life even if daughter do not blame him.

School holiday will see many families going overseas for holiday, many would also hang out with friends during this period.

Only those very sensible children will go to help a hawker parent. Always heart wrenching to hear such news. [bigcry]

Indeed, I'm sure the sound of her scream will be replaying over and over in her father's head.

I ever saw the same accident right before my eyes at Alexandra Village, I was sitting right in front of the stall.

Just a 'ugh' from the auntie and that's it. No screaming throughout the ordeal as she is in a state of shock. Stood there in a squatting position.

SCDF came in about 15 mins to remove the top roller. No blood at all and her hand was flattened all the way to her wrist,. The hand looks like a glove.

The machine has no safety guard as they removed it. They tried to maximize the amount of juice by folding and folding the sugarcane and feeding it into the rollers...haiz.

This accident will not be the last for sure.

No appetite for dinner after that. Few months later, I went back and the stall changed owner selling other drinks.

This case, also the same, the girl conscious throuhgout.

I thought, they would have fainted - given the pain and the sight.

Sometimes you just feel this world is unfair. Accidents happen to people who are good, filial and sensible. [bigcry] [bigcry]

I pray to God that she will recover quickly. Although she lost a couple of fingers, I'm sure good fortune will be with her always ^_^

The problem is that could be hard to make safe guards.

Hand have moisture, so does the sugar cane.

Torque required to crush the sugar cane is not unlike that required to coz accidents.
