Whether uber good or not, there are still demand for it.

yup coz its heavily promoted n incentivized. take both of those away n itll die. question is does their revenue per trip cover their promotion n incentive cost?

http://recode.net/2015/08/05/yes-uber-lost-a-lot-of-money-and-it-will-lose-more/

anyway enjoy the app! its cool coz some billionaries burning their $ n we get to enjoy! :D

Indeed! I had sighted an incentive promo as well as a statement from Uber shown by an Uber driver and I can safely say that the incentive can be as generous as $1-2 K (if not more) per month depending on the driver's performances. I doubt local cabbies from bona fide taxi operators enjoy such incentives (if my hiring friend is telling the truth) other than the occasional quarterly or yearly incentives made available to them.

anyway we all know that if uber doesnt give out all d incentives etc nobody wld bother being a uber driver lah

the notion of getting market share is more important than making profit is basically the musical chair theory. whoever are the backers of uber are taking v high risk that 1 day the entire coy may die without notice n affect alot of people who rely on uber as income source. I bet nobody questions this until something bad happens

If that statement in Red is meant for me, I will have to say that like many here, I have the privilege of various options without the dire need to try Uber at all.

I doubt I will ever need Uber - at least in Singapore.

Rather than reading, why not try it out yourself?

I have been using it at least twice a wk at night. I can tell you it is cheaper because taxi has all the surcharge in CBD.

I would need to pay at least $16 to get home from Asia Sq 2 to Upper Boon Keng. For Uber, it is no more than $11.

For price surge, it is willing buyer willing seller choice. Before booking is made, user will be informed of price surge. If user agrees, user will have to click agree and key in the surge value. It is pain in the ass if one is in a hurry.

Lastly, during the MRT breakdown, i paid surge of 2.5x from Raffles Hospital. I got uber X within 10 mins and paid $22. While waiting for my ride, i saw a long q of 10 ppl at Raffles Hospital taxi stand. Everyone there was on the phone calling for taxi.

For me, price is secondary. I get better service in which i was treated like limo customer. I don't get the customary jerk from taxi driver.

It allows people who wanted a car and to pay off the rental by working.

the above quote is untrue as Uber requires the car to be fully paid up before applying to be a Uber driver

The market is probably big enough to support 1-2 players, the leading parties are Grab and Uber, the rest will have to exit if they can't achieve the network effect (the more users, the more drivers and the momentum will one day become unstoppable). It is a winner takes all game and there will be a winner, or maybe 2.

Uber doesn't deploy the vehicles. It's the renter / vehicle owner who register their vehicles as an Uber driver. It can be a Toyota Altis, Corolla, Vios, Honda Civic or even a Mitsubishi Lancer, Mazda 3 etc.. for the normal Uber X.

Earlier today, I saw an old Honda Civic (VTI model) driven by a Chinese male picking up passengers of an Indian family who looked like foreigners. It is highly likely that the vehicle was driven by an Uber or suchlike service provider since the passengers went to the rear seat with none taking the front passenger seat. I doubt friends would do that to a private vehicle driver who is of a different race altogether unless of course the driver is employed as a personal chauffeur for the family. [crazy]

like i mentioned before, its not me but my missus taking the cab. Still dont feel right as there is no proper regulatory on this system.

btw, what kind of vehicle do they deploy? Any choice to make?

Open ur mind.

If u don't need Über in Sg, what's make u taking it elsewhere?

Taking Uber from Changi is cheaper than taxi.

IMO, using own vehicle as a taxi is not a good idea if you have a family since a taxi carries various type of passengers who are often strangers.

It is difficult to tell if a passenger has an infectious disease which is one of the many occupational hazard taxi drivers are exposed to.

If someone with an infectious disease sits in your car and if it is not well cleaned and fumigated, such health risk is inevitably exposed to your family unless their immunity level is high.

Perhaps I'm just being paranoid?

I have tried Uber when my car is in the workshop. I would say the price is similar to taxi price but you are taking a ride in a private car. I use the App to call for a uber vehicle and I would say quick fast response as you will be surprised that they are all around the island even in Tuas.

I am also thinking of working as a part time uber if I scrap my car, meaning to rent a car to do uber. I thought of using my current car to work as uber because car is not subject to loan already. But using own car to do uber is not as easy and doesn't have much advantages compared to rent a car. Still thinking if to rent or to buy a car. If I buy a car, can forget about doing uber.

I guess in every country where Uber exists, their public taxis and/or private transport should be available. Hence, it is unlikely that I will ever take Uber since I don't sign up as their subscriber which requires info such as credit cards for payment and unlikely will ever - at least for the foreseeable future.

Open ur mind.

Thus far, there never have been a precedent in a passenger getting injured while riding in a Uber taxi. Unless something drastic happens, it is difficult to tell how their insurers and/or operators will take responsibility.

I havent tried uber before

From safety perspective, any difference between taxi n uber car if involved in accident n sustained injuries?

There is. My cousin was injured while riding in an Uber taxi. Hit from the side by a right turning car. Claimed insurance like normal taxis. To be Uber driver, the car owner is supposed to apply to change the car to commercial car and get those commercial insurance just like taxis. This will cover them even when they are ferrying passengers. I know cuz my dad who is a taxi driver did consider driving for uber using his own car. But gave up on that idea cuz its too much of a hassle. Plus driving a taxi means he got an additional car which can lend to relatives.

IMO i cannot understand how temasek allowed vertex to invest into grab. itll be just like twitter, IPO while loss making n its a complete stag trade aka just sellout post IPO... but they sure kena moratorium... just look at twitter vs FB share price peformance now.. miles apart

Temasek can possibly help Grab, to some extent, to become the number 1 in Asean (it has Malaysia, Singapore is friendly and they probably understand Indonesia better than Uber), the consolidation will come one day and you don't need to be the sole survivor to make money. Don't think they can influence or extract as good a deal (relative to Grab) from Uber given its size. So might as well bet on Grab and try to facilitate its success in this part of the world and bingo, 50x returns (and possibly a bigger stake in Uber at end of the day). Just speculating....

Note Temasek is also an investor in Didi Kuaidi. Putting eggs in many basket. Just need 1 to succeed.

Grab app interface is pretty shit compared to uber but I'd like to support them because of uber's despicable tactics (overseas).
