(Photo: @_oatc_/twitter) SHANGHAI: More than 400 students from China's Henan Province sat for their exams in an open field on Monday (Dec 19) in toxic smog, according to local media reports. The middle school in Linzhou, Anyang, reportedly organised four outdoor exams involving Grade 8 students. Without masks to protect themselves, students sat on small stools and did their test papers. The school headmaster, Feng Jisheng, was quoted as saying that the exams were scheduled when the pollution levels were not very serious. Feng has reportedly been suspended. The Global Times reported that concentration of hazardous breathable particles, known as PM2.5, has exceeded 500 micrograms in Anyang since Monday. In Beijing on Wednesday, the PM2.5 level was 360 micrograms per cubic metre according to official data. The World Health Organization has said the safe recommended level is 10 micrograms. The battalion was disbanded after the communist surrender. GGK evolved from that group. My cuz-in-law was part of the Polis Hutan......when the group was disbanded he was promoted to AS Sup of Polis,,,handled some high profile case back in the 70s. The west admired the jungle skills of the men they fought with in the jungles against the Jap....the brits set up a jungle unit in the late 40s to fight the communist. Do you think this Mr Lok will accept the advice if the counsellor advises him to change his mindset towards his child or the way he treats his child? Communication is highly dependent on relationship, which is in turn dependent on the person's self-awareness, social awareness, emotional stability and maturity, IMHO. Parent-child relationships take time, effort and love to build. No relationship, don't talk about communication. Parenting is tough, good parents give a lot of themselves to raise their kids well. I will say that there are definitely parenting techniques to learn, to unlearn the not-so-good ways of doing things we might have seen in our own parents. But how many parents think that they need to learn how to parent their kids? If we ask parents to learn about parenting, those who need it most will think they don't need it and may even feel insulted. Many people, most people in fact, just cannot see their own problems, everything is others' faults. Those working with the needy and people with lots of personal problems have a hard time, because many of them just cannot realize their problems, let alone pull themselves out of the vicious cycles. These people with problems usually become very bitter about their pathetic situation and antagonistic. They blame others for their plight to preserve their self-worth. Will the FSC just ask them to go find another organization themselves? I really doubt so but we will never know what happened then. Singapore is a first world country? All those 'reminders' asking people to show respect to those providing service at counters, is a slap on our face. Yes, those behind the counters are supposed to help people with certain things, and sometimes they really don't do a good job, either lack the relevant training or accurate information, or poor attitude. But a lot of times, they are also bombarded by unreasonable demands or weird questions, people with their unique sense of entitlement, thinking they have all the rights in the world to jump queue just because they are in a rush, or they have the right to question because they are rich and educated, they have all the rights in the world to bang table just because they are customers. Service is generally not being emphasized in SG, service personnel do not have much pride in their work and don't provide good service, people don't respect them much, it's a vicious cycle. I just returned from a holiday in Tasmania. Driving there was a breeze, less traffic and simple roads because of their low population density, and more gracious driving. One thing that struck me is their culture of greeting one another, even strangers they meet on path while trekking. Service personnel always greet the customers first, ask about their day (though it feels very superficial at times), apologize for having their customers wait. Well they definitely enjoy a slower pace of life and higher quality of life as well, with more personal time to do what they enjoy doing, but it doesn't mean that in SG we cannot learn to be friendlier and more gracious. Now I initiate the greetings at the counter the moment I made eye contact when pump petrol, ordering fast-food, usually will get blank stare half of the time. Photo: The Straits Times While he was engrossed with reading the e-mails on his phone, New Zealander Stefan Paul Afendoulis, 48, got into a collision with Mr Toh Peng Hwee, a teacher, causing a "tangling of legs". Afendoulis, a Singapore permanent resident, grabbed Mr Toh's neck and pinned him against a wall at Safra Yishun McDonald's in Yishun Avenue 4 at about 8am on Aug 12, 2014. He stopped only when other parties, including his wife, shouted at him. Yesterday, the company director was fined $2,500 and ordered to pay $57 compensation to Mr Toh, now 43, for his medical expenses. Afendoulis had initially claimed trial after being originally accused of grabbing Mr Toh's neck and knocking his head against the wall repeatedly. After a seven-day trial, District Judge Luke Tan amended the charge to that of grabbing the victim's neck and pushing him against a wall. Afendoulis then pleaded guilty to the amended charge last month. The court had heard that a commotion broke out after the two men bumped into each other. Afendoulis claimed that Mr Toh tried to grab his arm while he was walking away. He then grabbed Mr Toh's neck. Deputy Public Prosecutor Michael Quilindo said although the victim's injuries were not particularly severe, Mr Toh was "throttled", causing him to have difficulty breathing. He was attacked at a vulnerable part of the body with no chance of retaliation. He added that Afendoulis showed no remorse immediately after the incident and flaunted his wealth to the victim, saying he was able to hire a lawyer. The prosecution witnesses had testified that Afendoulis said this with an arrogant tone. The DPP said there was no reason for Afendoulis to have behaved in the way he did with a complete stranger. "His actions were disproportionate to any perceived threat and the prosecution submits that the accused's claims of acting 'defensively' should be wholly rejected," he said. Afendoulis' lawyer Shashi Nathan said his client, a father of two, would have been willing at the outset to plead guilty to the present amended charge. He was forced to claim trial because the original charge had stated that he repeatedly knocked the victim's head against the wall. Afendoulis' lawyer said his client grabbed the victim's neck and pushed him against the wall to hold him there as he believed the victim was about to assault him. The maximum penalty for causing hurt is two years' jail and a $5,000 fine.
