Vratenza Supersonic December 13, 2017 Share December 13, 2017 When Toyota wants to go into premium segment, it started Lexus...and it has come a long way since. Takes lots of years and effort to build the brand to something more than a rebadged Toyota. When Honda wants to go the same route, they created Acura which is mainly sold in USA. I think they lost the plot somewhere along the years. When Nissan wants a piece of the pie, they started Inifiniti. Up to now still paying catchup with Lexus. Kia wanted to fight the big boys with the Stinger in the sporting department, which usually also means dabbling into the premium pricing segment, they did not create an offshoot brand or even a sporting product line (eg, AMG/M/S/TRD/Nismo). Immediately they expect consumers to buy their Stinger on it's own merit. If only life is that simple. In Singapore's case, C&C adds to the nail in the coffin when it price it unrealistically. That's my 2ct opinion on the whole development. I would have love to change to a Stinger next year if the price is more reasonable. ↡ Advertisement

Agree with much of what you mentioned re the challenges of moving upmarket. But, having said that, seems what Kia is doing with the Stinger isn't exactly a like-for-like with Toyota with Lexus or Honda with Acura. That's probably what Hyundai / Kia is doing with the Genesis brand. With the Lexus/Acura/Infiniti/Genesis analogy, the car maker is trying to offer up a similar sized and power product (perhaps with more features) at an equivalent price point to the corresponding Audi/Merc/BMW (perhaps with a 10-15% price discount) ie IS/Q50/G70 vs A4/C/3-series or GS-ES/Q70/G80 vs A6/E/5-series. With the Stinger, Kia seems to be pushing a sub-A7 sized sedan with C43 power at A4 pricing. They did a similar thing with the Sorento, where they offered a larger than compact SUV but smaller than mid-sized SUV with above mid-sized SUV refinement, but starting at high compact SUV pricing (but at way above previous Kia pricing levels). So not sure I can recall a direct precedent to this approach but its definitely good for consumers, who now have more choices. The problem - and I entirely agree with you here - is C&C's local pricing for the Stinger, which seems misaligned with the global pricing relativities adopted by Kia in other countries.

Beehive3783 Twincharged December 15, 2017 Share December 15, 2017 Well, at least C&C has the balls to bring in the Stinger. Komoco didn't have balls to bring in the Genesis Coupe after RHD production started for the Aussie market.

Would definitely consider a second hand version if it comes on stream.
