Even with the ongoing China/US trade war, rarely does economic news out of the ol’ US of A rattle Hongkongers. Well, until now. Panic has erupted — well at the very least some concern has been expressed online — after reports that the US company which makes some of the city’s favorite chicken franks, aka chicken sausages, aka “Valley Chef” sausages, has gone belly up. Announced earlier this month, Zacky Farms, a California-based food production company, filed for bankruptcy protection. The news started causing concern recently when online reports emerged suggesting company’s chicken frank sausages could disappear from supermarket shelves altogether following the bankruptcy filing. You see, Zacky Farms distribute the sausages via a Hong Kong-based subsidiary called Dah Chong Hong Ltd under the brand Valley Chef. For years they have been a staple in Hongkongers’ breakfasts, hotpots, barbecues, and afternoon teas. Check out this commercial from 1987 showing how they can be used to prepare “western-style dishes”, like, sausage on a steak… According to The Business Journal, the company made the filing after it emerged that it was shutting down its poultry processing plants in Stockton and Fresno, and eliminating 475 jobs. The bankruptcy petition lists estimated assets as well as debts in the range of US$50 million to US$100 million, which could spell the end for the company, and could also mean that Hongkongers may have to say goodbye to their little processed friends. According to HK01, netizens left comments on online forum HKGolden expressing their distress. “No Valley Chef, no life”, said one freaked-out Hongkonger. “It’s the end of the world!” typed another, before presumably running around in circles in a mindless panic. Others have been posting photos of the sausages in supermarkets around the city on sale. A chef surnamed Mak told on.cc: “I’ve been cooking with those sausages for about 20 years, if I have to switch brands, people will notice and say ‘chef, why don’t you have Valley Chef sausages? These taste different’.”

Hi, Thinking of family trip in KL, just driving up there, park the car for 2-3 days, and shop at shopping mall attached to hotel. Is staying at One World hotel next to 1 Utama better as compared to Gardens / Boulevard Hotel in Mid Valley? Which is more convenient and would make a more pleasant trip for the family? Also, going on weekdays better? Or weekends? Thanks.

I got this video footage from a relative who went to China on a tour recently. This was a visit to the Jiu Zhai Gou national park. China has 1.3bn people and their internal tourism will be enough to generate so much economic activity. See 1:17 for the crowds! The waterfall was pretty neat. Not the majestic type, but because it wasn't too big, you could go near to it. In Part 3, they took a coach to another part of the park and had to go uphill. They came to a place called Fairy Lake. Happy viewing!

Mrs Eileen Pua Jiu Er, 31, a chemistry teacher, suffered three fractures and was sent to hospital, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The accident happened on Tuesday, at a traffic crossing outside the school at about 12.15pm. Mrs Pua had been crossing a road along Boon Lay Avenue, just outside the school, when the accident occured. This morning, Mrs Pua spoke to reporters at the National University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She said she was on her way home and had just started crossing the road when she suddenly felt something hit her forcefully. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. "I saw the pedestrian traffic light turn green before stepping off the curb," she said. "I am a teacher, and I need to set a good example when I'm outside the school, so I definitely wouldn't cross when the light is still red," she told Wanbao reporters. She suffered multiple fractures all over her body, broken ribs and is expected to take at least a month to recover. Closed-circuit television footage was not able to determine if Mrs Pua had dashed across the road when the light had not yet turned green or if the van driver had beaten the red light. ------ Remember that earlier video - where the taxi jammed brakes after running red lights, and managed to stop before hitting the car? This van was not so lucky... hope the punishment is severe. Gotta teach drivers to slow down at amber and stop at red light; not to save a couple of minutes by running the red lights; but risking harming people. -

:o :o River Valley High principal assisting in CPIB probe Posted: 19 December 2012 1838 hrs Click to enlarge Photos 1 of 1 inShare 26 SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has redeployed the principal of River Valley High School Mr Steven Koh Yong Chiah. This comes after MOE received information by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) that Mr Koh is assisting in its investigations. MOE has appointed Mrs Teo Khin Hiang as the new principal of River Valley High, with effect from 20 December 2012. Mrs Teo, 54, is an experienced senior education officer. She was the deputy director of the Programme Coordination Office in MOE HQ, and previously the principal of the Singapore Teachers' Academy for the Arts (STAR). Prior to her stint at STAR, she had held appointments as cluster superintendent and principal of three schools - Chua Chu Kang Secondary, Pasir Ris Crest Secondary and Commonwealth Secondary. A ministry spokesperson said MOE will work closely with Mrs Teo and her team at River Valley High to ensure that school activities and programmes continue to be carried out smoothly in the best interests of the students. MOE will be redeploying Mr Steven Koh to MOE HQ as principal (special projects). SELVA EATING HOUSE. Located in between 5 stars chicken rice and 7-11. Please think twice before patronising this coffeeshop for indian food. It is a hyper fxxked up and fuming experience for me and my family on 4 jul 2010, 0030am. 3 of us sat down, waited for around 5 minutes no one served us the menu or ask what we want. Eventually the indian man came over after i stood in front of their stall for another few minutes and we ordered nasi goreng mutton w/o chili, kopi tarik and teh-O less sugar. They apologised no mutton so i changed to nasi goreng chicken w/o chili. The indian wrote our orders down. After waiting for about 15 minutes, the indian came back apologising that he forgot our orders. Annoyed, i repeated the orders clearly once again and the guy again wrote it down. The drinks came pretty fast. The Teh-O did not come with less sugar but was still acceptable. The Kopi Tarik was way too sweet. Couldnt finish the whole cup. The nasi goreng came after about 10 minutes, WITHOUT FORK & SPOON. I tried a few attempts to call the waiter but no one responded. So with more annoyance, i walked over to another table to get my utensils. Soon eneough i found that the nasi goreng did not came w/o chili. But damn, i was already too hungry to complain. So i decided to eat it anyway. Throughout my dining process, i kept chewing onto broken pieces of chicken bones (as seen in picture), though stomach filled with fury, still managed to finish up the nasi goreng. When billing, i decided to express my feedback to the indian man. I walked to the counter as i did not wanna create a scene. I recounted all the unpleasant service and quality of food, then demanded to pay only for the nasi goreng and to get a waiver off the drinks. I truly think this is not an unreasonable compensation deserved for a mood-spoilt customer. Guess what, the indian man insisted us to pay in full, although apologising profusely. So then again, didnt wanna create a scene & therefore paid him the rest and left. That left us a foul mood weekend night, especially after watching Argentina & Brazil lost in a row. Goddamned it.

Will be going for annual Genting trip (18-20 Jun 09) and wife wants to stop over at K.L. or near K.L. for 1 day for shopping (17 Jun 09). 2 cars going up, my side (2 adults + 4 kids) + sister's family (2 adults + 2 kids) Anyone stay in these 2 hotels before? Which one got bigger room (under same category)? Which one is cheaper (under same category)? Which one got bigger shopping mall? Which one is nearest to the shopping mall, just walking, don't have to drive?
