  3. Fernando Alonso won ice races in both karts and Fiat 500s as Ferrari and Ducati's week-long Wrooom festivities came to an end at Italy's Madonna di Campiglio ski resort this evening. The ice racing event has become a traditional conclusion to Wrooom, and this year was a two-leg contest that started in karts. Alonso led a Ferrari Formula 1 team one-two ahead of Felipe Massa in this race, with Ducati's Nicky Hayden third. His new MotoGP team-mate Valentino Rossi was fifth, behind Ferrari protege Jules Bianchi, but ahead of the team's other test drivers Marc Gene and Giancarlo Fisichella. Alonso was unbeatable again when the field switched to the small Fiat saloons, as this time Ducati duo Hayden and Rossi completed the podium. The evening also saw outgoing Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer make his final appearance for the team by demonstrating a 2009 Ferrari F1 car on the frozen lake using studded tyres. source http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/88936
  4. Michael Schumacher moved to shake off more of the rust of his three year retirement at the weekend by racing karts. After finishing just tenth at the wheel of his Mercedes in China, the seven time world champion reverted to 40 horse power at the Erftlandring circuit in Germany and set pole position in a Tony Kart for the 125cc KZ2 class. The 41-year-old German won the first of two heats, but was beaten in the second. Not only will Schumacher's W01 chassis be a new one in Barcelona this weekend, the package has been updated for a longer wheelbase that should satisfy his desire for a less understeering car. "I am hoping for a better race than I had in China and of course I would not mind having had better results so far," he said. Source: GMM

  6. What would you do (assuming you have no racing experience) to give you the best chance to get in the support races for our F1? It would be a crying shame if no Singaporeans get to race on our very own F1 street circuit!
  7. Business Times - 23 Apr 2008 Honda races to top of parallel import sales chart By SAMUEL EE PARALLEL imports (PIs) continued to race ahead in the first quarter of this year. And the most popular PI brand is now Honda, not Toyota. Between January and March, the 100 or so PI retailers here sold 5,669 cars, according to the Land Transport Authority. This accounted for 22.9 per cent of the 24,798 new cars registered in Q1 - an increase from 20.9 per cent for the whole of 2007. And where Toyota once ruled the parallel universe, the first three months saw it being overtaken by Honda. Honda PIs notched up 2,491 registrations in Q1, slightly ahead of Toyota's 2,397. The current position of Japan's second-biggest carmaker as the most popular PI make mirrors that of its ranking, for now, among authorised distributors belonging to the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA). In Q1, Honda also upstaged Toyota among MTA members to claim top spot. But there are still three quarters to go in 2008, and the Toyota juggernaut could easily end the year as the best-selling marque in the MTA and PI arenas - just as it has every year since 2002. For now though, Honda is the leader and its Stream compact MPV is the most popular PI model. In Q1, 1,062 units were sold, or almost in every five PI cars. This is no surprise because the Stream also ended 2007 as the top model. The No 2 PI spot in Q1 went to the Toyota Corolla Axio (722 units) and No 3 to the Honda Fit (640), a new generation of the popular small hatchback which is yet to be imported by authorised distributor Kah Motor. The once popular but now ageing Toyota Wish (377 units) ranked fifth position, behind the Honda Airwave (390). The jump in PI numbers is especially significant in the context of a shrinking overall market. Last year, 106,710 new cars were registered - an 8.8 per cent fall from the all-time high of 117,062 in 2006. This year the industry is not expected to sell more than 98,376 cars because of a reduction in the COE quota. With PI sales surging in a shrinking market, they must be eating into the share of authorised distributors. MTA members sold 18,384 units in Q1 this year. In other words, one PI car was registered for about three MTA cars - a ratio that has been rising steadily in the PIs' favour. In 2007 it was one PI car for roughly four MTA cars. In 2006, it was one for about six. The improvement marks a turnaround for the PI trade from just a few years ago, when it appeared close to collapse. In 2004, the number of PI cars was about 4,000 after the government cracked down on rampant under-declaration, among other things. That figure was a big drop from 2003's 7,500 or so units and at odds with the strong growth of the overall passenger car market, which was riding on an increasing supply of COEs. But the PI business turned around in 2005 - sales rose to 6,282 units before rocketing to 16,137 in 2006. One year later, 2007's 22,304 grey imports set another record. So will 2008 be a boom year for PIs? It could be because of a parallel-imported car's more attractive pricing. But authorised distributors complain that this is due to grey importers' lower OMVs (open market values) and willingness to offer CNG (compressed natural gas) conversions, which reduce the selling price of the new car through a 40 per cent green vehicle rebate.
  8. KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia will continue to help ethnic Malays increase their share in the nation's corporate equity, but will not deprive other races, the deputy prime minister said, according to a local media report. Malaysian affirmative action, also known as the Bumiputera ('sons of the soil') policy, aims at improving the economic well-being of the majority Malays by giving them preference in education, jobs and business. 'We will not do anything that is seen as depriving other races of their rights,' Najib Razak was quoted as saying by the Star newspaper on Thursday. 'We will only demand whatever rights the Bumiputera has. That is all.' Mr Najib's comments came after Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) stunned the government last month by bringing more than 10,000 ethnic Indians onto the streets of the capital to complain of racial discrimination. Malaysia has taken a hardline stance in recent weeks to maintain peace and order in the country ahead of elections many expect to be called within the next few months. An election is not due until May 2009 but Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is widely expected to dissolve parliament and call for fresh polls by early next year. In 1969, Malays made up half the Malaysian population but owned barely 2 per cent of the nation's corporate equity. Malay ownership has since climbed to about a fifth - and one unofficial estimate puts it as high as 45 per cent. But the wealth gap between Malays, who now make up about 60 per cent of the population, and ethnic Chinese (a quarter), remains big. Chinese corporate equity is double Malay equity and Chinese household income outstrips Malay income by 64 per cent. -- REUTERS

  10. Interesting, especially when I am audience.... Just collected my car from my workshop as my car went in for a week of hardcore servicing.... The scene of drag racing happened right outside AMK Autopoint where y workshop is. Time is 1630pm.. After I turn out of the AutoPoint and trying to go to CTE. as I was turning out of the main road (T-Junction), A citicab was waiting by the side of the road very near to the junction on the lane that I am going to turn. Then the traffic light turn green from my right as vehicles started moving (me still waiting on the T), a Yellow Top taxi came behind that CitiCab and honk the fella down as he is blocking one whole lane. The citicab refuse to move despite the horning! So, the Yellow Top is blocking me as the traffic lights turn green, I am unable to move becoz the YellowTop is blocking my way and the tupid tupid citicab still refuse to move. So I let both of them have a taste of my horning too! Then the citicab moves! The yellow goes right besides him into the centre lane and both of them were shouting vulgarities at each other, then it happened! Both of them did their version of a PG NightSprint right on the road, I tried following them to see what happens. Both were apparently trying to out-drag each other, the Citicab being a Nissan Cedric and the YellowTop a Toyota Crown, it almost looks like a Nissan Skyline vs a Toyota Supra, except for the thick diesel smoke that came from both their CMI exhaust. The duo race all the way to the junction of NYP and AMK Central. Then at the traffic light (Red), I stopped right behind that Citicab, the citicab guy open his car door and out he came with a baton on his hand, the yellowtop beats the lights and fled. He saw me behind his car and he turn and walks towards me, I beat the red light and fled too. God knows what will happen to me if I sat there like a fool. Citicab drivers are gangsters huh? I reported the whole incident to TP via email. I urge anyone here who happened to witness this "race" and do not mind stepping out to help remove a road bully from our road please kindly contact me at 97649167. The duo just have watch "Taxi" more than once...
