  1. SINGAPORE - National Solidarity Party (NSP) member Nicole Seah sent out an appeal through Facebook on Nov 5, calling for more volunteers to provide tuition to needy students. According to Ms Seah, the scheme was set up in May this year, for needy students living in the Macpherson area. The session is held every Saturday, for two hours, reported the Shin Min Daily News. Click here to find out more! Students, ranging from those studying in primary to secondary schools, have to pay a $30 fee, which is used to purchase teaching materials. "Under special circumstances, we will also absorb the fee," says Ms Seah. The scheme started out with only 15 kids, but the number has been increasing steadily. They now have 40 students registered under the scheme. Most of them are primary school pupils, but secondary school students have also come forward to enquire about the scheme. There are plans for expansion as well, says Ms Seah, who has received enquiries from parents living in the Marine Parade GRC area. There are currently only eight to 10 volunteers tending to the 40 students. Hence, they are hoping to recruit more volunteers in order to reduce the student to tutor ratio, which will benefit the students. After her post, many netizens left messages on her Facebook page, expressing their interest in helping out. But many were worried that they do not possess the experience nor qualifications to tutor kids in the academic subjects. But Ms Seah says the main aim of the tuition classes is to inspire students to believe that they can still do well in their studies, despite their family circumstances. She says the effort of the kids and volunteers have paid off. In the recent year-end examinations, many students reported a marked improvement in their results. http://www.edvantage.com.sg/edvantage/news...ee_tuition.html Kudos to Nicole

  3. Quite ridiculous right? I quote from stomp ChinaSeenStompCN said on 28 Sep, 2010 Report as offensive KAO PEI LAH! Naive young people. IF YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER, THEN PLEASE, DON'T HOPE FOR ANYTHING IN RETURN. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING IN RETURN, YOU DON'T CALL THAT VOLUNTEER WORK, YOU CALL THAT A JOB. AND YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE VOLUNTEERED IN THE FIRST PLACE IF YOU HOPE FOR ANYTHING. UGLY FAKE VOLUNTEERS, GO CHECK DICTIONARY FOR THE MEANING OF "VOLUNTARISM" before you all cry father cry mother here!~!!
  4. More bad press... Really salute these YOG volunteers from the bottom of my heart. Also feel sorry for them as well.... No only did they have to endure all the hardships during the games, they had to also stomach lousy food initially. And after the games, a school trip for some of them to RWS was ruined because of the wrong timing given. Before this thing cooled down, 45,000 certs already given out were found to be printed with wrong signatures & replacements have to be sent out to all over the world to all participants, officials & volunteers. Now a simple gesture to thank them with free F1 tickets also ended up like that.. What were these folks thinking? Still blaming inexperience in handling or another Honest Mistake? *shake head* http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...pass_after.html YOG volunteers were promised tickets to the F1, but these were only received the day after the Grand Finals on Sunday. Three STOMPers have written in regarding this matter, and it seems the tickets had only been posted out on Friday (Sep 24). On the night of the F1 Grand Finals (Sep 26), STOMPer Serene wrote in to express her unhappiness that her tickets had not yet been received. She was unhappy that she had to watch the race on television when she had been promised tickets by the YOG organisers. STOMPer benson writes in his email (Sep 27): "Another late YOG gift. "During the YOG appreciation function at Universal Studios Singapore, I queued with my peers for the complimentary F1 passes. "We were so happy when we knew that they would post the free passes to our addresses after we registered our interest and verified our mailing addresses. "We waited and waited, no sign of the pass in our mailboxes, so be it, anyway it was free. "To my surprise, I received the F1 pass in my mailbox on 27 Sep... was it SingPost's fault?" STOMPer evelyn also received her tickets a day after the event was over. She says: "SGP F1 2010 ticket WASTED!! "OMG!!! I just received my F1 ticket and it was mailed on Fri 24 sept 2010... "Don't they know that SingPost does not deliver mail on Saturdays since May this year? "Somemore it's a bay grandstand ticket!! One such ticket costs $298!!! "I could have watched the race live... It was all wasted... Too late for apologies... "I mean, no offence, but how the procedure for sending out the tickets went... I appreciate the effort in getting the tickets to us... "More detailed planning should have been done, and this should have been taken into consideration... DISAPPOINTED!!! =("
  5. Just now got YOG food shown to be crap for volunteers. Now my friends who are volunteers and live in boonlay/jurong have been ordered to take bus/mrt even though they have duty at east coast park on consecutive days? they have to report there by 7 and YOG hq refuses to reimburse taxi fares even if the taxi is pooled?? YOG hq insists that public transport is what should be taken. this is ridiculous. volunteers are being treated like dogs.
  6. i think my wowo gets better food... $300+million, catering get how much?
  7. Can someone explain the rights and obligations of volunteering? If I volunteer for X but get assigned to do Y instead, can I un-volunteer? Who should get the crap job? Volunteer or professional? Can I expect a certain level of leeway because I am going out of my way to help, or should I take whatever gets thrown at me because I volunteered?
  8. By Aloysius Sim, a Youth Village volunteer I am a volunteer for the youth Olympic village in NTU whom, initially, was very intrigued and impressed with this
