  2. From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_805936.html Concerns about fast-food delivery staff and their motorcycles Published on Jun 2, 2012 I AM concerned by the reckless riding of fast-food delivery staff, especially when they zip along Housing Board void decks to save time or make the delivery deadline. Last Saturday, I saw a Pizza Hut delivery rider doing just that at Marine Parade. I called the Pizza Hut hotline to complain and the reply I received from the manager was that the fast-food chain would look into the matter and counsel the rider. When I asked for the motorcycle licence number, he replied that he did not have it and explained the difficulties in identifying the rider. To his credit, he identified the rider after several calls, but it would not have been possible had I not persisted. When fast-food companies receive complaints, do they actually discipline the riders and to what extent? Over the weekend, I noticed two riders apparently making a delivery for McDonald's on motorcycles carrying Johor licence plates. At least one rider (see photo) was on a motorbike with only a provisional Malaysian licence. Is this legal? Are foreign vehicles allowed to be used for business purposes? How is insurance managed in the event of an accident? The authorities should review policies and regulate fast-food delivery service by motorcycling staff. Fast-food companies should also do the right thing by conducting safety reminders daily to motorcycle delivery staff, handle complaints seriously and be prepared to discipline staff, including terminating the services of such staff and reporting recalcitrant riders to the police. These companies should also review remuneration for these riders to give them an incentive to ride safely while not affecting their income. Until there is an improvement, I shall not be ordering home delivery; not when there is a chance that someone's safety could be at stake. Adrian Lee
  3. Just wondering. Is it because: 1. The new versions of that car model is coming soon? 2. They don't keep demo cars beyond certain mileage of test driving as they become "old cars". What would this mileage be? This question also got me thinking. Do they break in the new car before it goes on demo duties? We know usually the first 1000km of new cars is on mineral EO and not performing as normal. 3. They are replenishing with new cars for those particular models? This is related to when ADs sell the whole range of demo cars.

  5. Where is the love? Down-and-out Hong Kong celebrity couple Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung are set for a custody battle over their two kids in July. According to sina.com, Nicholas will go all out to challenge a pre-nup he signed with his now estranged wife - which accords her full custody of their two boys - Lucas, 4 and Quintus, 1, before they reach 18. Their mutual agreement also states that they are financially independent couple. But he will give her part of his earnings as spousal support. 'He doesn't care so much about the money part,' a source in Tse camp tells the Chinese news portal. 'He's willing to pay her off to get the kids back.' And if Cecilia chooses to play hard ball - which she will, the insider claims Nicholas has got enough proofs (including photographic evidence) of her inability to care for their children. 'He doesn't want to be nasty,' adds the source. "He respects the fact that she is the mother of his kids. But he wants them to be raised by his mum - Deborah Li -.' -- THE STAR/ANN http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/L...ory_686765.html
  6. Will char kway teow lead to sugar spike? An upcoming Glycemic Index of Asian food will help public plan their diets. Each time Ms Juliana Lim goes grocery shopping, she lingers longer than most patrons along supermarket aisles. That is because she has to decipher the Glycemic Index (GI) of foodstuff from its fibre, sugar and fat content. For the last two decades, the diabetic has been sticking to a low GI diet because spikes in her sugar levels will make her tired at work. The GI is a measure of how quickly carbohydrate-containing food raises a person's blood glucose level. "But choosing low GI food has not been easy as its information is not readily available on the Internet or food labels," said the 44-year-old executive. WHAT IS THE GLYCEMIC INDEX? THE Glycemic Index, or GI, is a scale which measures how much a food containing carbohydrates raises blood glucose levels. Foods with a higher GI, such as white bread, can cause rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. Those with a lower GI, such as whole oats, are digested more slowly, causing more gradual and smaller changes in blood sugar levels. GI is computed on a scale of zero to 100. Foods with low GI register a value of 55 and below, medium GI ranges from 56 to 69 and high GI means 70 and above. Low GI foods include dried beans and legumes such as kidney beans and lentils, green leafy vegetables, most fruit, and many wholegrain breads and cereals. Fat and fibre tend to lower the GI of a food and generally, the more cooked or processed a food, the higher its GI. Knowing the GI values of food can help with better planning for a healthy diet. Research has shown that a low GI diet can help prevent heart disease and diabetes, control cholesterol levels and maintain a healthy weight. 7. Woman says Lambo drivers like her need 2 parking lots to protect their 'exotic million dollar cars' Posted on 28 October 2013 Miss L, a Lamborghini driver, has come forward to explain why drivers of exotic cars tend to take more than their fair share of parking lots in public carparks. According to her, drivers of exotic cars tend to have their cars damaged by other motorists, so this is their way of avoiding scratches and bumps. She wrote: "On behalf of my brothers and sisters out there who also drive Lamborghinis, I would like to apologise for what others may consider inconsiderate, occupying two parking lots. "The other lambo drivers may feel that it is a waste of time explaining ourselves here, or don't care what others think, or that we are the minority driving an exotic million dollar car, or even that we know what's best for our cars and others do not need to know. "These are the reactions I've got from my friends when I told them about explaining to the public on STOMP. "Yes, we know it is a very selfish act, but in public carparks everyone knows you get all sort of drivers. "Some but not all are irresponsible drivers who park beside our cars, and when opening their doors and getting down from their vehicles, they carelessly knock onto our cars, leaving dents, scratches and unsightly marks. "By parking in two lots we prevent any vehicles parking beside our cars. "I strongly believe that no matter what car or vehicle you are driving, you should be gracious when opening your vehicle's door, ensuring that you do not knock into someone else's vehicle, no matter what car or vehicle he drives. "I used to park in only one lot, but there was this incident that made me into a selfish driver too. "Basically my windows are pretty tinted, and after parking my car, I was putting on some of my makeup, with the engine off. "This other vehicle who just parked beside me, he probably did not know I was still in the car, and when he open the door, he basically slammed his door onto my car, leaving a dent and unsightly scratches on my car. "FYI, the parking gap between our cars is approximately 60 to 70cm. "When I got down from my car to confront him, he was very shocked, as I think he did not know there was someone in the car. And he was very defensive with his words, was hot-tempered, and he was pretty arrogant, saying that it was just small damage, and that I should just charge the bill to him. "I don't understand what got into him, but he went on to kick my car, and landed one of his fists onto the bonnet of my car. "Whether you believe me or not, I was calm, and kept telling him to calm down. "I did not retaliate to any of his harsh language. I'm a lady driver, so probably he was aggressive towards me? If I was a man, I'm not sure if he would do the same? I was in shock, as It was pretty frightening, when a uncle keep shouting at me ,"driving Lambo so what?" "You think you very rich ah?" "Who you think you are?!", and a whole lot of vulgarities. "Thank God a security officer was nearby and came over to help me. "To cut the story short, now in addition to the car damage, he also threatened me. So on top of the car damage, he has a lawyer letter as well. His family, called me to drop the suit, as they were salaried workers and did not have the money to get into these sorts of law suit. "The uncle also apologized to me personally, saying that he had lost a lot of money on gambling, and was in a very bad mood that day. "I've dropped the law suit, and as for the car damage, I did not take a single cent from them. "They were not in the best of shape to pay for the damage. "This is only MY part of my story, there are lots of stories out there from other Lambo drivers on why we became very selfish drivers. "I will not disagree that our cars, are our babies/wives, very expensive ones, that we have to take very good care of. "We also hope that the public will be gracious to our babies as well. "This also explains why as much as possible we love to park outside hotel lobbies. Although we are not staying in them, we don't mind paying extra to park there. "It is not what most people who think that we are trying to show off parking outside hotel lobbies. "Two main reasons, 1) someone will be there to keep a lookout on our car 2) we can have a personal/private parking space, and WILL NOT NEED to take up two parking lots in the public car parks. "3) Some carparks are too narrow or have humps/slopes that are designed too high, and we cannot enter without damaging the bottom of our cars. "So to conclude, to save all these trouble, money and time for both parties (myself and the uncle), we rather be labelled as selfish freaks, yaya papaya selfish freaks... "Hope you guys in future, will think twice before criticizing us. "But of course we can't stop what others say, but before you Stomp our cars, kindly take a nicer photo of our babies. "Have a great week! "Yours Sincerely, Miss L" Miss L's comments are in reference to STOMPer KC's article about a Lamborghini driver who had taken up two parking lots. KC feels it was very inconsiderate of the driver to do so. Said the STOMPer: "It was very inconsiderate of this driver to occupy two parking lots. "Trying to attract attention?"
  8. Drivers feel it is safe for them to use their phones while driving but not safe for others: Survey Some 83 per cent of the drivers feel it is safe to use their mobile phones while driving and admitted to doing so in the last year, a survey by Samsung found. More than 90 per cent of drivers however said they found it dangerous for other drivers to use their mobile phones while driving. "Complacency seemed a key cause of the unsafe behaviour; when asked why respondents used their phones in this manner, the feeling that it was safe for them to do so was the response most cited," Samsung said in a press release on Tuesday afternoon. With more motorists booked for using their mobile phones while driving, the Korean electronics firm launched a road safety campaign last month. Targeting motorists who cannot leave their phones alone while on the roads, Samsung commissioned a survey to study the driving habits and perceptions of 513 drivers in relation to the use of mobile phones here. 9. One of Saudi Arabia's top conservative clerics has said women who drive risk damaging their ovaries and bearing children with clinical problems, countering activists who are trying to end the Islamic kingdom's male-only driving rules. A campaign calling for women to defy the ban in a protest drive on October 26 has spread rapidly online over the past week and gained support from some prominent women activists. On Sunday the campaign's website was blocked inside the kingdom. As one of the 21 members of the Senior Council of Scholars, Sheikh Saleh al-Lohaidan can write fatwas, or religious edicts, advise the government and has a large following among other influential conservatives. His comments have in the past played into debates in Saudi society and he has been a vocal opponent of tentative reforms to increase freedoms for women by King Abdullah, who sacked him as head of a top judiciary council in 2009. In an interview published on Friday on the website sabq.org, he said women aiming to overturn the ban on driving should put "reason ahead of their hearts, emotions and passions." Although the council does not set Saudi policy, which is ultimately decided by King Abdullah, it can slow government action in a country where the ruling al-Saud family derives much of its legitimacy from the clerical elite. It is unclear whether Lohaidan's strong endorsement of the ban is shared by other members of the council, but his comments demonstrate how entrenched the opposition is to women driving among some conservative Saudis. "If a woman drives a car, not out of pure necessity, that could have negative physiological impacts as functional and physiological medical studies show that it automatically affects the ovaries and pushes the pelvis upwards," he told Sabq. "That is why we find those who regularly drive have children with clinical problems of varying degrees," he said. A biography on his website does not list any background in medicine and he did not cite any studies to back up his claims. U.S. diplomats in a 2009 Riyadh embassy cable released by WikiLeaks, described Lohaidan as "broadly viewed as an obstacle to reform" and said that his "ill-considered remarks embarrassed the kingdom on more than one occasion." The ban on women driving is not backed by a specific law, but only men are granted driving licenses. Women can be fined for driving without a license but have also been detained and put on trial in the past on charges of political protest. Sheikh Abdulatif Al al-Sheikh, the head of the morality police, told Reuters a week ago that there was no text in the documents making up sharia law which bars women from driving. Abdullah has never addressed the issue of driving. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...varies-20130929

  15. Would like to heard from driver who have use 15W40 engine oil in their car, what their feedback. recently purchase a voucher from Deal.com.sg and purchase car servicing from one of the workshop in sin ming. the engine oil that they use at pump out from oil barrel into a 4litre container, i understand that this will save them cost but the problem was they are replacing 15W40 [Eneos] into my car which all the while i am using 5W40. i check with the staff and upon question, the voucher entilted only to 15W40 engine oil, i will have to top-up to get 5W40 engine oil. after hearing the amount to top-up, i find it not worth therefore allowing them to replace with the 15W40 engine oil. my car is about 160,000km in mileage. therefore not too particular but would like to heard from others on this. thanks for sharing

  21. Law and Foreign Affairs Minister, K Shanmugam, said it is time for Singaporeans to seriously reconsider their driving habits. On his latest Facebook post, he said he received over 360 comments to his post on driving habits, a subject which had obviously touched some raw nerves. Mr Shanmugam said his wife has been driving for 23 years, and has never received a ticket, and is a very careful, steady driver. Turning to his own driving experiences, he said that he puts a premium on being courteous on the roads. The minister said the issue of traffic and accidents have been on his mind in the last few weeks. Last Friday, he visited an elderly woman at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, a victim of an accident in his constituency. Two days ago, he met an ambassador at a function, who felt that the driving in Singapore was worse than the experiences in her country. Over weekend coffee at Chun Tin Road, Mr Shanmugam said both he and his wife have been regularly shocked by the fairly brazen conduct of some drivers, with cars turning into a one-way street, against the flow of traffic from the main road, in order to make a three-point turn, amongst several driving habits. Mr Shanmugam said where they have been able to, both he and his wife have given the vehicle numbers to the Traffic Police. The minister felt that over the years, Singaporeans seem to have become less courteous, which indicates something about society. Mr Shanmugam stressed that how well others are treated, defines people as a society. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1222087/1/.html
  22. Saw today new paper on the residents complaining about HDB building BTO beside their Ang Mo Kio DBSS flats. One say there is a school around how to ensure safety of the children during construction? One say the dust and noise will affect their environment. One say the area there is very crowded after the BTO, how to make sure enough amenities for the resident there. One say should at least wait for 5 years later (MOP) so the DBSS resident can have a choice to move out. I think they just wanna say, the BTO will affect their DBSS price lar. Just be frank lar! [laugh]
