According to sales executives who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Inchcape company is proposing to cut commissions by $100 to $350 per car. At the same time, it is looking to raise sales targets. "Easily, our monthly income will fall by $2,000," said one salesman, noting that sales staff's income averaged between $6,000 and $8,000 a month. Another said the cut was supposed to have been taken effect last month, but "it did not". The Straits Times understands this is because of the union, which has asked the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to intervene. An MOM spokesman said the ministry has "received a request from the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union to conciliate a dispute involving its sales consultant members and Borneo Motors (Singapore) Pte Ltd over a proposed cut in commission and an increase in sales quota". "The conciliation process is ongoing," the spokesman added. "Both union and Borneo Motors' management are engaging actively in the conciliation process. Progress has been made on some issues but more work needs to be done on remaining issues where parties' positions differ." Borneo Motors' managing director Jasmmine Wong said: "We are in the midst of discussions which we have every two years. We have up to the end of the year to reach a conclusion. Nothing has been decided." Ms Wong - part of a new management team which replaced several veterans laid off two years ago - pointed out that the sales staff wanted "higher commissions and lower targets". She said this was not feasible in a market which is expected to shrink over the next two years on account of smaller certificate of entitlement quotas. On Monday (May 6), Nissan agent Tan Chong Motor decided to close its Bukit Timah showroom because of a shrinking number of walk-in customers. "My priority is to keep jobs," Ms Wong said. She added that the company had also put in a system which generates leads for its sales staff, as well as a car delivery division to relieve sales staff from non-sales duties. But a sales veteran said: "If the company is losing money, then we understand. But that is not the situation, and in any case, it is unfair to target sales staff alone." Borneo remains one of UK-listed Inchcape's top profit generators. Last year, it attained Toyota's Triple Crown award for industry-leading sales in passenger vehicle, commercial vehicle and taxi sales. According to two previous managing directors, Borneo has not had a sales commission cut before.

Last Saturday, I saw a Pizza Hut delivery rider doing just that at Marine Parade. I called the Pizza Hut hotline to complain and the reply I received from the manager was that the fast-food chain would look into the matter and counsel the rider. When I asked for the motorcycle licence number, he replied that he did not have it and explained the difficulties in identifying the rider. To his credit, he identified the rider after several calls, but it would not have been possible had I not persisted. When fast-food companies receive complaints, do they actually discipline the riders and to what extent? Over the weekend, I noticed two riders apparently making a delivery for McDonald's on motorcycles carrying Johor licence plates. At least one rider (see photo) was on a motorbike with only a provisional Malaysian licence. Is this legal? Are foreign vehicles allowed to be used for business purposes? How is insurance managed in the event of an accident? The authorities should review policies and regulate fast-food delivery service by motorcycling staff. Fast-food companies should also do the right thing by conducting safety reminders daily to motorcycle delivery staff, handle complaints seriously and be prepared to discipline staff, including terminating the services of such staff and reporting recalcitrant riders to the police. These companies should also review remuneration for these riders to give them an incentive to ride safely while not affecting their income. Until there is an improvement, I shall not be ordering home delivery; not when there is a chance that someone's safety could be at stake. Adrian Lee
  5. Link The problem all started when the Sr staffs were retrenched, resigned, retired and asked to leave. When she took over how many senior staff with years of experience and trained by experts from Japan, England and Hong Kong that did not agreed with her was removed and replaced with young people with paper qualifications and have not the slightest idea of how to run a train system. There these young management staff tried to impress her by backstabbing each other, come out with hairbrain ideas or quick fix solutions that did not sound in the long run. Well guess what after 10 years of this type of sh.it from a well oiled and smooth running system she ran it to the ground. Mark my words as long as she is in the helm surrounded by her clueless dogs there will be no improvment. That was the time I took a serious look at my retirement plan. Then came her waves of cost cutting measures, buying of cheap spares that looks good on paper but can't even last till the next round of preventive maintainance, reduce the manpower to all sections working at skeleton crew level. The last straw came when some of my junior staffs was not satisfied with the way they were graded and the amount they got compare to what their bosses got. They brough it up to the union and HR and they got the same reply " The door is always open". That was when I knew the sh.it has hit the ceiling and I took my earily retirment and joined my fellow former co-workers.

"At around 11.10am today, there was an accident involving two SMRT maintenance staff along the track at a servicing point near Pasir Ris station," said Mr Patrick Nathan, Vice-President, Corporate Information and Communications, SMRT Corp. "SCDF was immediately activated and they have confirmed that the two SMRT staff have passed away. We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time," added Mr Nathan. "We are working with the Police to conduct a detailed investigation into this accident." The brother of a signals officer who witnessed the accident told Channel NewsAsia that the signals officer was "traumatised". Pasir Ris resident Francis Dorairaj, who was at the scene, expressed shock and disbelief. "Why were maintenance people on the track when the train was operating?" he questioned. TRAIN SERVICES DISRUPTED Train services along the East-West Line were also disrupted. SMRT announced at 11.20am on Twitter that there would be no train services between Tanah Merah and Pasir Ris in both directions until about 12.15pm. This disruption was later extended till 12.45pm, but by 1.35pm, service had not yet resumed. According to SCDF, it was alerted to the incident at Pasir Ris MRT station at 11.11am. A fire engine, A Red Rhino, two fire bikes, two ambulances, and three support vehicles were dispatched. SCDF confirmed that two men were pronounced dead at the scene.

  14. Read todays Straits Times and felt extremely angry. The article talk about how great that the airport & NTUC managed to 'double' their staff salaries. But i was so angry reading the article. How can a government entity condone paying staff $500 a month? unless they are working 10 days a month, if they are actually being paid that amount for 1 month, that is abusing low wage workers even now with the pay increase, that is shitty pay. They will probably blame the appointed contractor, but if they know these guys were paid unfairly, why NTUC and Changi Airport only act now? ---------------------------------- see article extract here: Straits Times, 14 Aug 2013 Airport trolley handlers had their salaries nearly doubled from last month, as part of the labour movement's efforts to lift the pay of outsourced contract workers. The 240 airport trolley handlers are now earning up to $1,000, up from their monthly pay of $550 to as much as $1,000. Their increase in pay depends on their work attendance and performance. Besides earning more, these handlers will also get more training to pick up new skills to become more employable. The recent moves are part of the NTUC's progressive wage model, which sets out a career ladder with pay standards for low-wage workers in various sectors. NTUC assistant secretary-General Cham Hui Fong said on Tuesday that the labour movement will work with other employers to improve the salaries and job opportunities of other airport outsourced contract workers.   22. 15 years in prison a person can do anything to make money but do it legally and smartly SINGAPORE - For more than two years, he pocketed some S$2 million by selling mobile phones stolen from his employer and used the proceeds to live the high life, buying Porsche sports cars, luxury watches and home theatre systems, all so to project "a veneer of seeming success", his lawyer claimed. Yesterday, Matthew Yeo Kay Keng, 39, a former M1 corporate sales account manager, pleaded guilty to two charges of criminal breach of trust and seven charges under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act (CDSA). Twenty-three other charges would be taken into consideration during sentencing. Since April 2008, he would create false subscription contracts for mobile services purportedly made by corporate customers to obtain free or subsidised handsets, a district court heard. Before these could be sent by couriers, Yeo would intercept them with the lie that he would personally deliver them. He would then destroy the fake contracts. In all, Yeo pilfered 3,085 mobile phones of brands, like Blackberry, iPhone and HTC, this way. With the ill-gotten gains, Yeo went on a shopping spree, splurging on watches from brand-name makers like Audemars Piguet, IWC and Rolex, with price tags of up to S$60,000. He also bought a S$170,000 used Porsche 911 Coupe Tip, which he later traded in for a S$200,000 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Triptronic, and invested in 40 Crossback Arowanas for a S$10,000 profit within three months. Yeo even dreamt of fame, pumping S$300,000 into a movie project called Metalgraves. "He also thought he could become famous in Hollywood if the project succeeded," said Deputy Public Prosecutor Seow Zhixiang. Yeo's ruse was finally uncovered during an internal reorganisation in November last year. In mitigation, Yeo's lawyer Manoj Nandwani said his client had confessed as soon as he was caught by his employers. He added that the father of two children, aged five and one, had rendered full cooperation in helping the authorities recover largely all the ill-gotten items he had bought. At the mention of his family, the short, stocky man broke down, pulling his white prison garb to wipe off tears from his face. Yeo will next appear in court on Oct 21. He faces up to 15 years' imprisonment and fine for each criminal breach of trust offence. For each of the CDSA offences, he can be fined up to S$500,000 and/or jailed up to seven years. Just over half of the female employees surveyed said they would rather have a manager of the opposite sex, compared to just one in five male workers. Just over half of the women polled and nearly six in 10 men also prefer working with male colleagues. The study by global recruitment firm Randstad took place over several weeks from July to last month, and involved 405 Singapore-based employees - split evenly between men and women aged 18 to 65 - who completed an online questionnaire. Almost seven in 10 employees polled currently report to a male superior. Ms Karin Clarke, regional director for Randstad's Singapore and Malaysia offices, said: "Women are very good at building strong teams, empowering staff... Men tend to compete to win. "(But) the most important factor is that employees respect the authority of their leader, are motivated, inspired and feel valued." Accounts manager Ronald Naidu, 27, who works for a communications company and reports to a male boss, agreed. "To me, as long as the boss is fair and reasonable, gender doesn't matter," he said. However, Ms Michelle Fong agreed with the report's findings. The 29-year-old sales executive for a home-grown engineering company said: "I've had female bosses in the past and found that they tend to be more moody and emotional. "Guys are usually more laid-back...as long as you do your job well." Despite the preference for male colleagues and bosses, some respondents - nearly three in 10 - said they believe the performance of their organisation would improve if there were more women in higher management. Ms Clarke attributed this finding to the fact that women are often perceived as being more collaborative and inclusive in their leadership. "In turn, this can drive better business performance, with employees becoming more engaged and motivated as their contributions are recognised," she added. Almost half of all employees also felt that their companies perform best when there is an equal ratio of men to women on the team. Mr David Ang, executive director of the Singapore Human Resources Institute, said that the results could be attributed to the fact that there are simply more men in the Singapore workforce, but added that each gender brings different things to the table. "Men may be more rational and straight to the point, while women may be more nurturing (as bosses)... Each have different strengths," he said. He added that gender should not matter to employers when recruiting staff. "The manager should, most importantly, have the skills, knowledge and experience to do his or her job," he said.
