fast cars, shd go for manual especially if u wanna take it to the track. Slow cars. Why bother since its for transport, get an auto and be happy and relaxed on the road. not some stressed crazed middle finger pointing manual driver stuck in a jam lol~

Same thinking applies to bikes.

i enjoy driving manual cars, probably for the control and fun factor. it's cheaper to fix and easier to DIY fix it. I can't afford high-end/powered cars, so having a manual usually means I get a slightly torquey-er sprint with a modest 1.5-litre engine.

that said, many high powered cars today come exclusively in robotized manuals (DSG, SST, MCT/SMG, F1) and unlike the torque-converter automatics, they are VERY fun to drive on track and spirited driving on roads. whoever said "automatics" are always slower than manuals need to change their perception, or rather get educated. while the conventional automatics do sap torque from the engine, these robotized manuals shift gears using a system of clutches - just like your left foot action, but MUCH quicker. no matter what you like to think, you can never shift as fast as the mechanism. GTR, Ferraris, M3, are just some track-ready examples

that said, even torque converter transmissions are getting faster by the locking converters. ZF's 6-speed is a prime example - now used extensively in BMWs, and other makes using them too.. Jag, Bentley, Maser. they are still slightly slower than the clutch-based automatics. but they are still extremely responsive to your input. when the system senses a sudden stomp on the accelerator, it kicks down quickly. unlike CVTs or the older autos where it took 2 years before it decides to shift down a gear.

having driven automatic boxes on track, i personally feel that it still requires a lot of concentration and input. perhaps not the heel-toe-brake-shift-accelerate ritual, but you get to fully enjoy the chassis and suspension set up, the power of the engine, you pay more attention to the tyre grip, gentle throttle input, driving lines. i say it doesn't kill anything - just a different way of enjoying.

In Europe, the default is still manual, because they have 'proper' roads where people can shift gears properly unlike Singapore, so manual transmission cars will probably be around for a while yet. At least the European ones.

I don't mind driving manual, but not in Singapore, specifically town. Simply because of the nature of our traffic where it's constantly start-and-stop. It gets very tiring, and my legs aren't exactly in the greatest of conditions.

There are also times where I only need to slow down just a little bit and then speed up again (like waiting for a lane change opportunity), and in an auto I simply release everything to let the car slow down by itself, then floor it when there is a space. In a manual I will probably need to clutch in and downshift when the car slows down, and then quickly clutch in and speed up again when the opportunity turns up, all this usually within two or three seconds (downshift+upshift). Doing this constantly is very tiring.

I think I am so used to autos that I probably drive faster in auto than in manual. My gear shifting skills have become somewhat 'rusty'.

Other reason: No auto available.

But I still agree with the first 4 options. Braking in my fren's auto mpv for first time, it came to immediate stop (and everyone almost flew out of the windows) when I use the same strength to brake for my own car. I need to down gear to 3, use engine brake and brake for a nice deceleration. Think ABS plays a part too.

I prefer manual for braking reasons as i was involved in a slight kiss-to-the-back of a taxi when i got my new car while in auto-gear mode.... [sweatdrop]

And nearly got in another due to car e-brake in front... thanks to LTA ingenious traffic light design but managed to stop in time while using engine break to slow the vehicle more....

nowadays car market manual transmission less than 10%, but some drivers still like to drive manual car, just curious the reason [blush]

having all those newer drivers, u tink they will go take class 3 instead of class 3a?? i tink all or most will take class 3a, so population of manual cars will be extinct soon... however i still prefer manual...

if I'm wrong, correct me,

about 70% female and 30% male take class 3a [thumbsup]

I Am SOOOOOoooooo GLAD that there are still so many manual lovers around! Almost everyone i knw are driving auto. I am prob the only 1 or 2 manual survivors around the ppl i knw... [thumbsdown]

Manual is gd. I cannot tahan the fact that power is lost by abt 15% by default due to the auto gearbox. I also cannot tahan the fact that the engine is trying to move the car whn the car is stationary, its jus like holding half clutch ALL THE WAY at the lights! Bad bad...

Talking about convensional auto and conventional manual, ALL are in favour of manual-FC, acceleration, weight, control, engine brake, not to mention cheaper and easier to maintain. The only few 'advantages' i can think of auto are-simpler to drive and wont stall. But you see, there is a reason i said 'ALL', cos manual can be simple whn it becomes 2nd nature and it wont stall whn driving one becomes 2nd nature too!! But the world is cruel to it. I forsee before the next decade, manual cars would have to be specially made...rarer thn supercars...

those are slow cars [lipsrsealed]

everyone who sits in my car thinks that my car is "fast". sometimes, they even ask if i have turbo. but no, it's just 1.1M nia, rev rev abit they THINK it's very fast [grin]

seriously, my car is slow lah. 14 seconds century sprint on a very good day [dead]. but maybe it just FEELS fast to the uninitiated

1.1M? Is yours a Getz? [drivingcar]

i prefer to drive manual only if my car is a sports car, eg evo, sti, wrx, civic type r etc... cos can feel the power n u r in control, damn shiok

however, if it is juz a NA car, i'll juz get auto over manual anytime, esp if driving in sg. juz too lazy to keep shifting gears in sg road plus NA cars also no power, drive manual also not shiok. well thats for me

but type R is NA too. u're probably trying to say tat fast NA cars?

IMHO, any car with manual is better than any car with auto. Of cos compare similar cars. [thumbsup]

i agreed. the only car i wanna drive in auto mode is probably an mpv. other then that, i prefer the feeling of being involved in the driving process. [thumbsup]

Turbocharged

Been driving a manual until I got my current car which is a CVT. Always have been quite "anti" about auto cars and reject any chances of owning an auto. Just last week I borrow and drove a van to transport a few things and it feels great driving a manual again. The feeling of in control and gear shifting makes me feel "alive".

I'll most likely get a Manual tranmission for my next ride [nod]

Current one Mz3 does not comes with true manual transmission, only so call the 'Activematic' whereby one could switch between Auto & so call 'Manual' [gossip]

To me, manual tranmission offers better control of the ride, more power & lesser maintenance .... as compared [:p]

Not many people can afford GTRs, Ferraris and the likes with sophisticated semi/auto gearboxes, not me at least. Generally for bread and butter models, manuals boxes will always be able to extract that little extra power/torque from the engine. Going off topic - how to spot a manual transmission car on the road? I always look at the brake lights at red light traffic junctions. Manual trans car drivers will normally pull hand-brake, release brake pedal and "free" the gear stick ...

agree! if clutchless transmission can't be real MANAUL, even if DSG [shakehead]
