This is what i faced very often. If no wind, easily excess of 30km/hr. And at times during afternoon the wind can be so strong that I cannot even hit 20km/hr after throwing all I have. So nowadays I focus more on having a good workout meaning just giving my best and not so fixated on timing as almost every trip is different condition. And early morning seems got most calm wind conditions compare to afternoon or evenings.

Agree.

Before sunrise seems to be the best. Then when ground heated up by sun the breeze also increase.

From this Facebook group, there's a seasoned cyclist on Bromptom just passed on this morning while attempting a RTI on New Years Eve. Cardiac Arrest.. Know your limit, but sometimes, it just comes.

I don't have a chest strap. But if I do intervals, can reach 185-190 on my watch.

I'm slack, no targets. Lol.

Risk of heart incidents seem to be highest in morning due to cellular circadian rhythm and our hormone surge on waking up.

For the general person, I won't push too hard in the mornings.

As I read some of the FB post and his own FB, I find this guy is rather fit fornhis age of 56. This is not his first 205 rti attempt. He had done one 200+ km and in oct a more than 100km rides. Also alot of video of him doing hills rep, he has very strong legs.

I guess no one can predict when the plaque ruptures. And it happened on the wee morning for him, as this is the time of highest MI incidents as mentioned by @Lala81. It just happened at that time for him while he was cycling.

Strong cyclist indeed. In the video he cycled up a 27% slope which I know very well. RIP.

When it’s time it’s time. Thousand and one reasons why and what if. But sometimes it’s like final destination.

After the recent incident where I broke the crank on my MTB, I have been cycling on my Litepro Bromptom-wanabe to see if can do as a replacement. But after 3 rides out, really struggling very very hard and on the verge to consider a replacement. On my first ride out with the bike, both of my legs cramp on the return leg due to strong opposing winds and pedalling too hard after a hiatus of 4 weeks due to overseas trip. Not easy to go beyond 30km/hr due to 3 speed gear hub and reduced fitness. Gotten better subsequently without cramps but still a pain in every seconds of pedalling though the sense of achievement at the end had also been tremendous as really difficult to go through the pain. Think only those who cycle hard will understand what I am going through as this is not the cycle in the park kind of relaxed ride. Am also wary of getting those hidden sickness like cardiac arrest though generally feeling safe due to myraid tests being done just few years back due to severe OSA issues to check for side effects. So not so worried about getting heart attack while riding as the most pressing issues are leg cramps and muscle pain. And I have gotten good life insurance coverage for any eventuality just in case so not worried at all.

So I am giving myself another month or 2 to conclude whether to keep the foldie or buy a gravel/hybrid if really cannot tahan. My son just got a gravel bike with full 105 parts and he commented can literally fly comparing to his MTB before that. Would take it out for a spin along TCMR soon as part of process to evaluate my options. Hopefully can keep my foldie as my objective is to exercise hard and not really riding fast. If I get a good bike that is easy to ride, I would have to ride even more or longer just to get the similar amount of exercise as my foldie now. And the potential of injury due to falls is also real and not a joke to fall at speed of 3xkm/hr or more. Lets see how in next few months time haha.

Cramps could also be due to losing too much salt through perspiration especially going beyond 1 hour. Try filling the bottle with isotonic drinks.

Base on my observation , no scientific reference. At least in my case cramps are simply not doing the mileage for enough time. When I began my running journey, doing 5km also cramp. Later did my 10km race challenge, also cramp.. When I no longer get 10km cramp, I did 21km, and get cramp from 15km.. Then I train for FM, no longer get cramps at 21km anymore and these was without hydration and salt supplment. Now my threshold for cramp is 35km, which I can't break coz I hardly do such distance.

I think getting repeated cramps is not just really due to electrolyte insufficiency but it's also due to unaccustomed load.

But for my own body, I've experienced enough to find that electrolyte replacement is a good way to relieve repeated cramps.

Try a mid tier Aero roadbike.

Really can feel the ride is more enjoyable.

Gravel definitely provide more comfort than Aero

Gravel or Aero roadbike allows 3 different hand positions = different body postures for comfort or speed

1) Hood

2) drops

3) top of handle bar on really chill ride, but hands are away from brakes.

Also suddenly increase of load can trigger cramps.

Consistent power and cadence can reduce chance of cramps. Then it's riding regularly of similar intensity.

I very lazy always never bring along water bottle(s) for rides haha. Only have a short toilet break at Changi Beach CP7 toilet and drink plenty of water from the water cooler there. I would think the cramps have been due to un-accustomed load after slacking for awhile. Have been doing the same routine without issues for close to 2 years.

Nothing beat a bottle of cold isotonic drink, or two, at the end of a xiong ride when literally left with no energy to even pant like a dog.

Come to think of it, recently during my xiong ride with my foldie after a long break, I was saved by a ice-cream van parked outside the SAFRA Resort near starting of TCMR. Had suffered 2 bouts of cramps on both leg prior to reaching the spot, and was literally dying from the pain. Never happier to see the ice-cream van, and immediately got a raspberry ice-cream with waffle. After that got a 100 Plus drink to quench the thirst. Really short of words to describe my ecstecy haha but not exaggerating to say the drink and ice-cream saved my life that day.
