BMW xdrive uses a Center electronic clutch to split power btw front and rear. For left and right, it is DSC.

It is standard on BMW > 400hp.

If air could go out for sure water could go in, simple to see all car stalle on flood will need engine strip down. Any water trace inside cylinder when engine re-started, water will evaporate violently and will result either piston crack or bent con-rod.....it not old mech it's physic.

That is water entering via intake and not exhaust. And the. Main reason is people go too fast such that the wake pushes the water above the intake. 
as long as engine is on and idling water will not enter as long as the level is not above the intake. Hence no need to rev and chiong like crazy. Go super slow in auto gear. For Manual just drive in 1st gear as speed is slow. 
 

anyway the driving thru floods reduces the life the following

1. Wheel bearings

2. alternator 

3. electronic power steering 

4. starter

5. gearbox and diff 

Anything under pressure like brake lines, hydraulic power steering, aircon compressor should be fine.

Walau....if water go via intake that someone made wrong decision or too bold decision (life too booring need chaallenges 🤣), car not submarine lor....

Any low gear any higher RPM whatever precautions if water go via intake confirm ICE car chop chop will die and can consider go to scrap yard......

These German System most of the time running on RWD(for Powerful Engines & FWD for leeser Power Engine)..not very useful.

POS Merc now check engine light again after 1 year. Scanned and it seems to be thermostat. Google says not normal one but expensive electronic one stuck open, not reaching optimal temperature, and more than 1k to replace all in. Will send in and see. Maybe time to get rid of this unreliable POS.

Use large spanner and bang a few times? Maybe can reset it?

that will usually free up a marginally seized motor

I used this method to free up starter motor and fuel pump many times

but many modern marseelee parts are made of plastic, including thermostat 

you tap a little harder, they crack or shatter... 🤭
