BabyBlade Internal Moderator September 15, 2017 Share September 15, 2017 The praise and dislike function has been running for many many many years. And here we are debating over the purpose of it again? Even for YouTube they have a thumbs up and thumbs down function. I've had thumbs down for some videos and sometimes I wonder why but does it matter? Nope. Does it affect me? Not really. Do I use the dislike function? No not really. Unless the post is really offensive. Can we improve it? Yes perhaps we can look into changing the word "dislike" to something less offensive. As suggested by Watzwheel. Agree and disagree may sound more pleasant than Praise and Dislike.

In today's context, I think many would have commit suicide if they were to be "junked" instead of "dislike". Change the name? Any different? Be it junked, dislike, disagree, thumbs down, or any other fancy names, it means the same thing, ppl just cannot accept " you don't agree with me". Will we have such a thread again? I bet you we will, no matter what name you change it to.

Jamesc Hypersonic September 15, 2017 Share September 15, 2017 (edited) The real problem with the dislike is not so much the dislike but the anonymity. I will give one example. I had an argument with another member here when I said the moon was made of cheese and the idiot insisted it wasn't. Of course he won the argument posting hard science that I couldn't refute. So i did the most dastardly thing I could do and dislike his factual post and I did it anonymously so he suspects its me but have no proof. Having anonymous dislikes allows small gas dicks like me to really get under the skin of the highly intelligent, factual and sensible posters with their brilliant posts. It is the tool of the coward that does nothing to encourage the spirit of camaraderie and great posting. Much as I like to be eloquent and gracious and behave like a gentleman this is all beyond me so I will just be the clown and spoiler and use the anonymous dislike button. So the question is do you really want to keep that function that is only useful for people like me and adds nothing to the success of the forum? Will the removal detract in anyway or just take away the ability of small gas people like me to annoy other people's enjoyment of the forum? Kopites Supersonic September 15, 2017 Share September 15, 2017 Retain the priase and ignore functions should be sufficient. Why do mcf need such a function as dislike? Never expect posting pleasing to everyone. There bound to be different in opinion and perception of things. So agreed to disagreed. No need to click on dislike just move on. Copied source. "Saying that you dislike something means you have a distaste for or hostility towards it. When you don't like something, it means that you would prefer something else over it. You would want this to not happen. 'Don't like' means that even though you would prefer the other thing you can still adjust to this happening. But saying that you 'dislike' means that you will be really unhappy if the thing that you disliked, happens."

Good point but I think the forum caters to all types including big or small gas types which doesn't affect their bottom line. Things that affect their participation rate would then start to wake up the admin and owners. These include vulgarity. There will always be people with different views even if you are the nicest or the meanest person on this earth someone will think otherwise. The general atmosphere can be set by moderators and their expanded role would not just be policing the forum but guide the direction and set the atmosphere of the forum. That said, members of the forum have also their responsibilities. Even in a small family making up of just a handful of individuals you still have quarrels. What do we expect from a forum with a "family" of a few hundred of activty members. I would like to give an example just how troublesome human beings can get. We all know the points from praise has no intrinsic value. But should admin decide to turn them to petrol voucher or grocery voucher, instead of just being grateful, some will start to complain about unfairness, low value, not attractive and so on. The one advice to moderators is not to spend your own money rewarding members here. I have a warehouse full of electric chairs some run on 110 volts but majority runs on 240 volts.

The anon dislike does not lead to open debate and more posting with different points of view and a more vibrant forum. In fact it ends all debate with a I cannot out debate you so I will just let you know I don't like you but won't admit who I am. Its like a mugger stabbing you in a dark alley you are left dead and never who know who did it. In car term it like a person playing jam brake and when you stop and come out of your car the anonymous disliker hides in his car and dare not come out. I agree but instead I focus on the end point. At the end of the dislike, the receiver (most humans) would feel uncomfortable but after that move on realising that nothing he or she or it can do. However, since this forum is one plane interaction, we cant see if the person is having an erection or not while giving the dislike. Furthermore the dislike is a generic button and not specific a dislike for the posting or for the person. A misunderstanding multiple many times over, with vengeance, there would be no forum so to speak or no virtual friend left. In real life, your MIL who loves you deep deep but you can't stand her obnoxious behaviour. If you Treasure your life you would not tell her in the face..... You got CB attitude. (We will pray for you 40 Days and 40 nights that you can come out from the hospital without your head stuck in the butt). But you can anonymously get a third party to do it for you. You know this discussion is all academic as the admin has no desire to change. On that note on removing the anonymity on dislike, then can we all be a man, instead of avatar and nickname why don't we all put our real name as our nickname. To make you happy, I start first, my real name is Halimah Yes~cob. People in general likes choices giving them a sense of control. Since you so free and so serious nowadays, can help me sell some electric chairs that undertaker had been buying for me. You want 110 volts type or the 240 volts type. For someone like still2016, he is a decorated war veteran. You don't really know the meaning of unfair, animal farm or one eye big one eye small really mean. Even as the 3 world wars had ended peacefully with cigars passed around, can you believe it, I have just signed on another warehouse rental to house the electric chairs, posters on snow owls or eagles as I just ran out of places. I learnt the joy of collecting and soon I will be collecting all media including digital versions of middle finger expression. The bottom Line is live with it. I don't mind if they don't take it away Every time I get out mass debated I will just secretly give a dislike to the poster. Theoldjaffa Hypersonic September 16, 2017 Share September 16, 2017 Recently come across more and more disgruntled voices (some that I can think of in recent memory includes @Turboflat4, @jamesc, @eviilusion, myself) with regards to the anonymous function when giving praise or dislike, especially the dislike portion of it. I do recognize that MCF points cannot be exchanged for grocery vouchers and one should not be overly mindful of the points since it has no impact in your real practical life what so ever. I also recognize that anonymous function do have it's positive role and use eg. when we want to give another person further praise and need to cycle through at least 10 other person, sometimes I will use the anonymous like to give 1 point to some posts that did not particularly shout out to me but is fair in the contents. In between 5 and 1 point, given the current "market rate" , 1 point will seem a little stingy, therefore anonymous function will be useful here. If anyone have used the dislike function before, one will know that to give a dislike, you will have to enter some reason for the dislike before the system allows you to do so. I will assume that is some sort of deterrent for wanton use of the dislike function. But frankly, is this system effective? Do the mods monitor the content entered? I did get some dislike points with the comments totally not linked to the topic the supposed anonymous person is disliking for . or Simply a "haha" or some nasty words. That to me is personal attack. And the funny thing is I have never even met the person in real life. I also realised that this function has been abused by intellectually challenged people with oversized ego to "get back at the person" when they have been out debated in the open. If the system owner thinks that giving a dislike (reasons required) should be handled differently from giving a praise (no reasons required), then shouldn't it be time to review if anonymous function for the dislike should be abolished? If the anonymous function for dislike is abolished, it will make people think harder if they really want to give the dislike and if they are willing to stand by their differing point of view and defend it in the open in an intellectual discussion rather than sniping in the dark. I must come up and say outright that I myself have used the anonymous dislike function during the early days of my forum participation when I was too hot headed and taking things too seriously. I apologize sincerely to those (not that many lah ) I have given anonymous dislike to previously. That is not something I am particularly proud of and is hoping we can make some changes for the betterment of MCF. Just saw this post today. Otang u 1 point first. Need to cycle thru another 6 more. Eh no.. since u didn't get any sponsorship for your wedding, I mean Er.. your post, I will otang u 5 points instead
Theoldjaffa Hypersonic September 16, 2017 Share September 16, 2017 So...... dislike is the new like? Could be the new gen of internet natives who spell "now" as "nao". So this could take "this" as "dis". Dislike to them is this like. I rike dis, rite? ↡ Advertisement
