Now that I am married, I will now have part two.  Living the rural retirement in vietnam.  Not sure how this thread will end up.  Heheh.  @Carbon82 don't link the two threads ok? :D  This is separate topic.

For those who missed the story behind my marriage, the thread is here

Combined with covid, I know I am taking a damn big risk but with half my life gone, I don't wanna think too much liao  (since 2017 according to when I start the thread but actually thought since 2013).

Your 1/2 life gone but what about your parents ?? or you may have siblings (I suppose)  I hope they are fit and fine and able to live the progressive years

i wish you luck and tidings in your new journey (or rather unchartered journey)

there is no such thingy as retirement..... use your skill sets to contribute in kind for a good cause whilst there to built a good name , of course Vietnam is a good place to go and makan angin maybe for a couple of months but living of of a suitcase is not easy also after some time

So I finally got married.  Won't tell you all the drama and all that.  I do realise marrying a foreign wife is going to be a lot of hard work. So while this thread is theoretically at an end, it can still be active if I have updates.

Sorry for being late to the party, but i am here to contribute some thoughts into this issue as I am a local with a foreign wife and a son who was born here.

I am in my mid-30s, mid level income aka lower tier of sandwiched class. Met my Batam wife through dating app, OKCupid 3 years ago. I know this term "Batam" raise a lot of eyebrows, but there are decent woman who are born there. Not all are looking for quick buck or a way out of poverty. Went over to Batam to meet her up for the first time, and subsequently when we started dating, we would take turns to either go to Batam or her coming over to SG. Like any other local male, was initially worried when we were about to tie the knot, knowing the big hurdle to go through when marrying a foreign bride. And it does not help that she has not worked in SG before.

However, the horror stories that i heard many times before did not apply in my case.

Pre-marriage LTVP 2017: Approved at 1 try

LTVP application 2018: Approved at 1 try and got LTVP+ (3 year validity) due to my wife pregnant at 16 weeks

PR application in 2019: Approved at 1 try within 3 months

Citizenship: trying in early 2022 (as need to be PR for 2 years to qualify for applying SC)

My wife holds a degree from an unknown university in Batam (which i consider diploma only). However, she can speak English, Chinese, Bahasa. Her race is Chinese, so it might have made things a little easier (not racist). I am just slaving away in a company and not highly paid. Hope i debunked some myths here.

Batam is like a stones throw away from Sg

Culture is also quite similar and language also too (both written and spoken too) ; it would be the same too across the causeway too

Similarly for China too

Vietnam is quite a different thingy altogether (though some very few can speak Cantonese and even Mandarin too (maybe due to work or cultural exposure)

Maybe if the nationality is Vietnam but the race is Chinese, it helps?

I think it depends on what was written on the Vietnamese girl's IC/passport. The race is usually stated. I think there is a box stating race. Can't remember clearly though.
